How Many Nations Participated in the Boycott of the Moscow Summer Olympics?

What Action Encouraged the U.S. Olympic Committee to Vote for the Boycott?

Although a decision to boycott the Olympics is made by the U.S. Olympic Committee, both houses of Congress passed resolutions supporting a boycott. The vote was 88 to 4 in the U. S. Senate and 286 to 12 in the U.S. House of Representatives. Because of the broad support by Congress, the USOC agreed with the decision to boycott the games. In the United States, athletes were warned that their passports would be stripped if they traveled to Moscow for the games. A lawsuit, filed by 25 American athletes wanting to attend the competition, was denied.

What Famous Athlete Was Sent by President Carter on a Tour of Africa?

President Jimmy Carter, in an effort to bolster support for the boycott, sent boxer Muhammad Ali to Africa on a goodwill tour in order to try and enlist the support of nations there. The trip backfired, however, when Ali himself questioned the boycott during the course of his meetings. Some of the countries that joined the boycott included West Germany, Israel, and Canada. Many Islamic nations boycotted the Moscow Olympics, but 11 athletes from Afghanistan, the country that had been invaded by the Soviets, attended the Olympic Games. Other nations that joined the boycott included the People's Republic of China, South Korea, Chile, Honduras, Haiti, and Paraguay.

Not all the nations refused participation in the games because of the boycott. Some were limited from participating due to financial problems that kept them from sending participants.

With 65 Countries Out, Which Countries Won the Most Medals in the Moscow Olympics?

Athletes from the Soviet Union won the most medals in the 1980 Summer Olympics with 80 gold, 69 silver and 46 bronze for a total of 195 medals. East Germany came in second with 47 gold, 37 silver and 42 bronze for a total of 126 medals. A Russian, Aleksandr Dityatin, won medals in all eight events in men's gymnastics, including three gold medals, making him the first to ever accomplish this feat. Because of the boycott, the anticipated first year of the field hockey tournament for women was almost canceled. However, at the last minute, Zimbabwe sent its team to compete against the Russians. The tournament results came as a surprise when Zimbabwe won the gold medal.

Definitely Mark Twain!

Answer: Named among the classic American novels, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn was written by Mark Twain. It is told in the first person by Huckleberry "Huck" Finn, a friend of Tom Sawyer, and is a sequel to The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. Aside from its controversial nature and its popularity with young readers, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn has been hailed by many serious literary critics as a masterpiece. Ernest Hemingway famously declared that the book marked the beginning of American literature: “There was nothing before. There has been nothing as good since.”

C. Pink

Need to chill? Think pink - the color we think of as "Pepto pink" is actually called "Baker-Miller Pink" after the two U.S. Naval officers who experimented with the color at naval correctional facilities. It's also been used at the University of Iowa in its visiting football teams' locker room and on public buses in St. Louis.

What Was the Significance of This Date in the History of the Apollo Program?

In preparation for the first piloted flight of the Apollo-Saturn series, a launch simulation was scheduled. Following completed testing, the Command Module was scheduled to launch in a low orbit around Earth on February 21, 1967. During the rehearsal of the launch, a fire broke out inside the Command Module, killing the three astronauts inside. Inside the module, the astronauts' suits quickly failed, and it is estimated that they died of smoke inhalation 15 to 30 seconds after the suit failure. During this period, rescuers were unable to withstand the toxic fumes and smoke in attempts to rescue the astronauts and were unable to save them.

Which Astronauts Died in the Fire?

Astronauts lost in the fire were the Command Pilot, Virgil I. "Gus" Grissom, the Senior Pilot, Edward Higgins White II and Mission Pilot, Roger B. Chaffee. Grissom had been a member of Project Mercury. He was a mechanical engineer and had served as a test pilot with the U.S. Air Force. He had flown in space twice and was the second astronaut to have done so. White was an aeronautical engineer and had served as a test pilot as well. He was the first man to spacewalk on June 3, 1965, from the Gemini 4 space launch. Chaffee was an aeronautical engineer, aviator and naval officer. This was his first spaceflight assignment.

What Caused the Fire Aboard Apollo 1?

A review board assembled to identify the causes of the fire and subsequent deaths of the astronauts reached the following conclusions. Because the hatch cover opened in instead of out, the door could not be opened due to cabin pressure. The atmosphere inside the module was pure oxygen, which made it flammable. The plumbing carried a coolant that was both corrosive and combustible, and wiring was found to be faulty.

In addition, the cabin contained a number of combustible materials, and preparation for an emergency situation was inadequate. Because of the extreme damage to the module caused by the fire, no definitive conclusion was reached by the board as to the exact cause. Instead, the board concluded that multiple factors had contributed to the accident. As a result of the investigation, the module went through a redesign process to lessen the risk of danger to future astronauts.

What Happened to the Apollo 1 Module After the Fire?

Following the disaster and subsequent investigation of the accident, the charred remains of the Space Module were taken to the Langley Research Center operated by NASA and located in Hampton, Virginia. The vehicle is stored in a warehouse and has never been available for public viewing. The widows of the astronauts asked that the module be officially designated as Apollo 1, in memory of the flight that never occurred.

Answer: Ivan the Terrible, or Ivan IV, was the first tsar of Russia. During his reign (1533-1584), Ivan acquired vast amounts of land through ruthless means and turned Russia from a medieval state into a world empire. Intelligent yet prone to outbreaks of uncontrollable rage, many believe him to have been mentally ill. In one such outburst, he killed his son and heir Ivan Ivanovich. It is generally agreed that his reign established the current Russian territory and centralized government for centuries to come.

"The Lion King" is loosely based on which William Shakespeare play?

Answer: The filmmakers of The Lion King have said that the story was inspired by William Shakespeare's Hamlet. The bulk of the story and several key scenes remain intact, with Denmark swapped for the African savanna, and people swapped for animals (mostly lions). Any theater fan would be able to follow the parallels along: the proud king (Mufasa) is killed ‘accidentally’ by his evil, power-hungry brother (Scar), and after a time away from the kingdom, the prince and rightful heir (Simba) returns to bring the truth to light. The characters of Timon and Pumbaa also serve as fairly obvious substitutes for Hamlet’s friends Rosencrantz and Guildenstern. The film even includes the appearance of the dead king as a ghost (King Hamlet/Mufasa).

"We Are the World" Was Known for Its Syrupy Vocals and Massive Fundraising, but What Other Pop Culture Reference Did It Spawn?

If you've ever been told to check your ego at the door before a meeting or other event, you've experienced one of the lasting references from "We Are the World." Producer Quincy Jones put a sign up with the saying on the door to the recording studio, intending to make all these big stars cooperate and not get huffy about the parts they were singing. Jones has noted that the sign ended up not being necessary -- everyone cooperated, learned their parts, and generally had a good time doing so. Long after the parodies and playlist rotations of the song ended, this one phrase has become a favorite of anyone trying to organize or coordinate a group of people.  Egos fully in check, the group laid down the chorus and solos before sunrise on the 29th, and “We Are the World” was in the stores and on the airwaves just five weeks later.

20 hours ago, phkrause said:

What Two Tactics Ensured All the Singers Would Keep on Track During the Recording Session?

When you get a large group of singers together, you're going to have different ranges and vocal qualities to deal with. Jones had his vocal arranger, Tom Bahler, listen to recordings of all the singers participating on the record, and Bahler assigned different parts to each singer, with some singing only in the chorus and others having solos. The assignments ensured that each part of the song would be sung only by someone who could definitely sing it -- there would be no stretching of vocal ranges and no cracking voices. Singers such as Kenny Rogers later said that the song lyrics and notes were assigned very well.

The other tactic was not so much a strategy as a happy occurrence. Ray Charles was one of the people participating in the recording. As the night wore on, some singers started suggesting changes -- and if that went on, the recording session could easily lengthen and possibly make the effort fall apart. Charles would simply ask people to listen to what the writers and producers, such as Michael Jackson, had already decided to do. The other singers had such great respect for Charles that they would drop whatever suggestions they were trying to make and just get back to singing.

What Effect Did "We Are the World" Have on Fundraising?

"We Are the World" was written and recorded a little over two months after Bob Geldof and Midge Ure wrote and recorded "Do They Know It's Christmas" for Band-Aid, which Geldof started after seeing a news report on the Ethiopian famine. Both songs raised millions of dollars for their respective causes (and Geldof sang in the chorus on "We Are the World"). However, that wasn't the end of it. Using popular culture to raise funds for something wasn't new, but now people had become aware of how powerful fundraising could be if large groups of major stars took part.

In July 1985, Geldof went on to create Live Aid, a 16-hour concert held in the UK and the United States simultaneously and broadcast around the world live. In 1986, USA for Africa went on to hold the "Hands Across America" event, in which participants held hands in a line stretching from L.A. to New York City. Both songs have been re-recorded for additional charity and awareness efforts, with the Ebola virus the focus of the latest efforts, and both Geldof and USA for Africa are still actively working on charity projects.

Can You Name Some of the Artists That Participated in the Song?

"We Are the World" opens with Lionel Richie, Stevie Wonder, Paul Simon, Kenny Rogers, James Ingram, Tina Turner and Billy Joel singing the first verse. Michael Jackson and Diana Ross follow, completing the first chorus together. Dionne Warwick, Willie Nelson and Al Jarreau sing the second verse, before Bruce Springsteen, Kenny Loggins, Steve Perry and Daryl Hall go through the second chorus. Co-writer Jackson, Huey Lewis, Cyndi Lauper and Kim Carnes follow with the song's bridge. "We Are the World" concludes with Bob Dylan and Ray Charles singing a full chorus, Wonder and Springsteen duetting, and ad libs from Charles and Ingram.

Which rock will float in water?

Answer: When rocks are submerged in water, they tend to sink because of their weight. However, pumice is the only rock that can float on water. Pumice rocks are igneous rocks which were formed when lava cooled quickly above ground. Pumice is created when super-heated, highly pressurized rock is violently ejected from a volcano. Pumice is vesicular or has gas pockets, or in easier terms, holes on the outside of the rock. This makes the rock less dense so it will float on water.
