What Prompted Cash to Write 'Folsom Prison Blues'?

While serving in Germany with the U.S. Air Force's Security Service in the early 1950s, Cash saw the movie Inside the Walls of Folsom Prison. That motion picture inspired the singer-songwriter to write a song that reflected his personal views of what it must be like to be imprisoned. The result was "Folsom Prison Blues," which he recorded at Sun Studio in Memphis on July 30, 1955. It was released as a single with "So Doggone Lonesome" as its B-side. Both songs in early 1956 climbed to the number-four spot on Billboard's Country & Western Best Sellers chart. One of the most memorable -- and chilling -- lines from the song is "But I shot a man in Reno, just to watch him die." Cash later told reporters that while searching for the "worst reason a person could have for killing another person . . . that's what came to mind."

When Did Cash Start Performing at Prisons?

The release of "Folsom Prison Blues" resonated with men incarcerated at prisons across the country, who began writing to Cash to ask that he come to their prisons to perform for them. Their requests, coupled with Cash's compassion for those in prison, persuaded the performer to bring his music to them. The first such concert took place in 1957 at Huntsville State Prison in Texas. Many more were to follow, including his most famous prison concerts at San Quentin and Folsom in California. In addition to his performances at American prisons, Cash in 1972 did a show for inmates at Sweden's Osteraker Prison.

Did Cash Ever Spend Any Time in Prison?

Cash had a carefully cultivated outlaw image as "the man in black" and had a few run-ins with the law, most of them linked to his heavy use of alcohol and amphetamines in the late 1950s and first half of the 1960s. Although he spent a handful of nights in local jails, he never served any time in prison. Despite his lack of firsthand prison experience, Cash was an outspoken crusader for prisoners' rights, testifying in July 1972 before a U.S. Senate subcommittee on prison reform.

Which Prison Concerts Produced Albums?

Cash's performances at Folsom and San Quentin in California and Osteraker in Sweden all were recorded and produced as albums consisting of the best tracks from the performer's live shows. "At Folsom Prison" was released by Columbia Records in May 1968. A live version of "Folsom Prison Blues" from the album went on to become Cash's first top-40 hit since 1964. Roughly a year later, Columbia released "At San Quentin," which had been recorded live at the prison on February 24, 1969. "A Boy Named Sue," a track from the San Quentin album, won Cash a Grammy for Best Male Country Vocal Performance. "Pa Osteraker" (Swedish for "At Osteraker") was released on the Columbia label in 1973. The most noteworthy track on the Osteraker album was Cash's version of "Me and Bobby McGee," originally written by Kris Kristofferson and Fred Foster for Roger Miller.

Which President was so superstitious, he would not travel on the 13th day of any month?

I'd have to say FDR, because I don't recall the others ever having anyone writing about them as to any superstitions!!

Answer: Today we celebrate the unlucky day of Friday the 13th, a date synonymous with bad luck among the superstitious. The official scientific name of the phobia is known as friggatriskaidekaphobia. That phobia is a cousin to triskaidekaphobia, the fear of the number 13. Our thirty-second president, Franklin D. Roosevelt, had a strong fear of the number thirteen. Franklin D. Roosevelt would not travel on the 13th day of any month and would never host 13 guests at a meal. Another notable presidential scaredy-cat? President Herbert Hoover.

Joe D

Answer: On January 14, 1954, actress Marilyn Monroe married New York Yankees ballplayer Joe DiMaggio at San Francisco City Hall. The pair’s marriage was short-lived and they divorced nine months later. After she and playwright Arthur Miller divorced, DiMaggio reportedly asked Monroe to marry him again. The pair never remarried, but they remained good friends until Monroe’s death in 1962. For the next two decades, until his own death in 1999, he sent roses several times a week to her grave. When he died in 1999, his last words were "I'll finally get to see Marilyn."

What Was the Name of Marilyn Monroe's First Husband?

Monroe's first marriage wasn't to a celebrity, it was just to the guy next door. At age 16, her foster family was moving and she had two choices: get married or return to the orphanage. So she married James Dougherty, then a merchant marine. While Dougherty was overseas, Monroe started modeling, and by the time he came home, she wanted to be an actress. Dougherty said she could be a housewife or a star, but she couldn't be both. So she became a star. Reportedly, when Dougherty remarried, his new wife forbade him from seeing any of Monroe's movies. Can't say we blame her.

How Did Joe DiMaggio First Meet Marilyn Monroe?

Once upon a time, Marilyn Monroe took some photos with Philadelphia Atheltics power hitter Gus Zernial. When DiMaggio was playing against Zernial a couple days later, he asked about the girl in the photos. Then DiMaggio contacted the press agent, Dave Marsh, who had set up the photos and got a date with Monroe. We're guessing if we were the ones who called a beautiful woman's press agent because she looked good in some photos it wouldn't have gone quite as well. The two hit it off and eventually got married, but it didn't last long. DiMaggio wanted a housewife, and Marilyn Monroe wanted to be a superstar. DiMaggio especially objected to the way she was promoted as a sex symbol. One of his more famous blowups came when they allowed spectators to watch the filming of that famous scene where the dress billows about her in The Seven Year Itch.

While the marriage didn't work out, the two later became close friends, DiMaggio cared for her deeply, and for 20 years after Monroe died, he had flowers sent to her grave three times a week.

What Arthur Miller Play Was Thought to Be Depicting His Marriage to Monroe?

Monroe's union to Arthur Miller made headlines at the time it happened, including the memorable one in Variety,"Egghead weds hourglass." They soon separated and Miller, like any good playwright, had to write about it. The play After the Fall is generally considered to be a depiction of the couple's marriage, and if you've seen it, you know Monroe didn't come off too well. James Baldwin reportedly walked out while watching the play because the character was such a harsh portrayal of the starlet.

In 1999, at $1,267,500, What Became the Most Expensive Item of Clothing Ever Sold?

And of course, no article about the relationships of Marilyn Monroe would be complete without mentioning John F. Kennedy. Did they or didn't they? That's a question we're not touching, but the rumors are rampant and Monroe singing the most arousing "Happy Birthday" song you've ever seen on national television certainly didn't help matters. In fact, that rendition is so famous that, in 1999, the dress she wore while singing it sold at auction for $1,267,500. At the time, it was the most money an article of clothing has ever sold for. Though that number was later eclipsed when the aforementioned Seven Year Itch dress sold for more than three times as much. The moral, as always, everyone wants a piece of Marilyn Monroe.

Which movie character uttered the iconic catchphrase, "I'll be back"?

Arnold of course!!!

Answer: "I'll be back" is a catchphrase associated with Arnold Schwarzenegger, which he first used in his role as the title character from the 1984 science fiction film The Terminator. In the original shooting script, the line was written as "I'll come back". On July 21, 2005, it was chosen as #37 on the American Film Institute list of top 100 movie quotes of all time. Schwarzenegger revealed that he had had difficulty pronouncing the word I'll and asked director James Cameron if it could be changed to "I will be back". Cameron refused but told him that the shot would be taken more than once and the best would be used in the final cut of the film.

James Earl Ray

Answer: James Earl Ray shot and killed Martin Luther King Jr. on April 4, 1968, as the civil rights leader was standing on a balcony outside of his motel room. After shooting King, Ray immediately fled, setting off a manhunt that would last more than two months and cover five countries. At the time, it was said to be the FBI's most expensive and biggest investigation in its history. The FBI caught up with Ray in London and extradited him to the United States. Ray pleaded guilty to the murder, and was sentenced to 99 years in prison. Ray died in prison on April 23, 1998.

Early Flight Simulations after the Fact Showed That Sully Probably Could Have Done What Instead of Landing in the Hudson?

While everyone was hailing Sully and his first officer, Jeff Skiles, as heroes, the National Transportation Safety Board was investigating whether or not the two had needlessly endangered 155 people (along with a $60 million airplane). There were flight simulations that suggested there was enough engine power for Sully to just return to LaGuardia. Sully said to the New York Daily News, "If I was allowed to fly again, (I could) still have to live with the stigma of not having done it right... It was a very real threat to us professionally if we had done anything less than our best at every point." Eventually, the investigation determined that while Sully could have flown back to LaGuardia, there was no way for him to know that and he made the best decision given the information he had at that time. When the investigation was done, Sully and the crew received the Master's Medal by The Honourable Company of Air Pilots.

What Actor, Who Has a Passion for Flying, Got a Movie about Sully Made by Showing a Producer the Pilot's Autobiography?

Tom Hanks will forever be associated with Sully for playing him in the movie (aptly titled Sully), but it was a different actor who got the movie made in the first place: Harrison Ford. He's the one who brought Sully's autobiography to Frank Marshall who's the one who decided to turn the book into a movie. But Sully still shaped the final product. When Hanks met with him, Sully made one thing clear: This was not to be a movie that acted like he's the only one who saved that plane . It would depict all the staff onboard who made the "Miracle on the Hudson" a success.

What Department at California State University, Fresno, Received a Call from Sully after the Plane's Landing?

When a plane gets partially submerged in water, there's a second issue besides passenger safety: The luggage. During the landing (can you call it a landing when it's on water? Oh well, either way), some passengers carried their bags out of the plane with them even as the flight crew instructed them not to. Among the items that didn't survive was a library book (ironically one titled Just Culture: Balancing Safety and Accountability) Sully still had out from California State University, Fresno. The library received an apologetic phone call from someone who suddenly had the best excuse ever for why he shouldn't have to pay late fees. The library waived all fees, then bought a replacement copy and put a template honoring Sully in the book. As for the rest of his luggage, much of it got recovered.

"The airline hired a reclamation company to get our stuff (and) dry it out," Sully said. "To keep the stuff from getting funky, they put dryer sheets in everything, so when you open this box, it's all pristine. My phone charger still worked." In fact, the recovery company restored pretty much everyone's luggage. The only people whose stuff they couldn't save? The people who insisted on carrying their bags off the plane during the rescue.

After His Successful Landing, Who Contacted Sully about Possibly Running for Congress?

After becoming a national hero, Sully, a California native, was approached by local members of the GOP about possibly running for Congress. Sully declined the opportunity (which would have pitted him against incumbent Jerry McNerney who ironically had introduced a resolution to honor the pilot shortly after the emergency landing took place). Sully said he wouldn't want to put his family through the experience, a decision affirmed by the director of Sully, Clint Eastwood who told the pilot, "You look too honest."

Answer: Martin Luther King Jr. was a Baptist minister and social activist who played a key role in the American civil rights movement. King was such a gifted student that he skipped two grades in high school, 9th and 12th before enrolling at Morehouse College at the age of 15. Although he was the son, grandson and great-grandson of Baptist ministers, King did not intend to follow the family vocation until Morehouse president Benjamin E. Mays, a noted theologian, convinced him otherwise. King was ordained before graduating college with a degree in sociology.

What Was Prohibition?

With the ratification of the 18th Amendment to the Constitution, the manufacture, sale and transportation of liquors containing alcohol was banned. The passage of the Volstead Act added teeth to the amendment by authorizing enforcement of the ban. However, drinking beverages that contained alcohol was not illegal. Citizens were quick to make up for the lack of alcoholic beverages.

22 hours ago, phkrause said:

Why Did Prohibition Come About?

A long campaign by those against drinking, such as the Women's Christian Temperance Union, resulted in the passage of Amendment 18. These groups believed that banning alcoholic drinks would make families stronger, lower crime and make the nation better. Carey Nation was a prominent figure of the movement to rid the nation of alcohol. Arrested dozens of times and fined, she entered Kansas saloons and went about demolishing bars, sometimes with a hatchet. Although Mrs. Nation died before the passage of the 18th Amendment, it is believed that her fiery rhetoric and determined actions influenced others to support prohibition.

22 hours ago, phkrause said:

Was Prohibition Successful?

Prohibition was repealed December 5th, 1933, by the 21st Amendment to the Constitution, after it was discovered that the repeal had the opposite effect in many ways. Following the repeal, 18 states were still bound by their own temperance laws, and 38 percent of all Americans were restricted from purchasing alcohol in their states. The last of the states to repeal its temperance law was Mississippi in 1966.

How Did People Get Around the Alcohol Ban?

The ban on alcoholic beverages led to people using ingenuity to get around it and contributed to the "Roaring 20s" rise of bootleggers, moonshine stills, speakeasies, booze cruises, bathtub gin and mobsters like Al Capone. It also led to the invention of new cocktails such as the Mary Pickford and the Sidecar which used less alcohol and masked the taste of illegally made alcohol that was inferior. Illegal speakeasies, where people could gather to drink, were hidden from public view. Clients found out about locations of speakeasies through friends and used a password or name of a certain person to get in. Booze cruises, or cruises that didn't go anywhere except perhaps in circles once the boat reached international waters, were popular because revelers could enjoy socializing and drinking without the fear of discovery. Closer to home, people could visit their doctor and get a prescription for medicinal alcohol.
