Could it be that we are conscious of our shortcomings when dealing with people of a different skin colour, and so, seeing it expressed in black and white (no pun intended) makes us more aware of unspoken bias?

I work with African-Americans (I work in the U.S.) who would be offended by the term "BlackSDA."

I think the issue is one similar to Affirmative Action (and of course we'll have a range of responses to that term and concept). It's about redressing past inequities (and in fact, inequities that very much still exist). In most universities more women than men graduate, but there are far more senior tenured faculty who are men. Although that's a historical inequality that I didn't cause, and although it might even negatively impact my own career as a young male academic, I would have no problem with a program to preferentially promote *qualified* women in an accelerated way to redress this inequality.

So black people (the terms keep moving because they are seen as pejorative, which is an issue in itself) in America are disadvantaged (generalisation - I know there are rich black folk and poor white folk, but it's about the majorities) relative to white people. Thus it makes sense to have programs to redress those inequities... but if whites organise to protect their existing privileges it's a different thing. I personally think that's fair enough... but I look forward to the day when it won't be about race, but just about wealth and poverty, and we're all working at helping those in poverty to have better lives.

white history month already already exists. It happens 11 months out of the year. Most of the history that is discussed, highlighted, taught is white history. Thats to be expected, whites have the power!

The History channel is a channel that deals with white history. I watch it sometimes, I like it but it is essentially white history!

When my wife was pregnant with our first child I bought her a "pregnancy" magazine. As I leafed through I noticed that there was not one picture of a child or mother of colour. There were over 200 pictures in the magazine. Evidently, black people had not started having children in the 1990's. I called them and they said that the thought had not occured to them to have people of colour in their magazine.

The reason why we have black mags, TV progs, etc is because we want to see "US" read, hear and experience "us". White society generally portrays "us" in a negative light or not at all!

The reason why we still have schools for black kids is that many schools are still for white kids even though you won't find that stated the college prospectus. Perhaps its also has something to do with the fact that only few decades ago many schools were openly unashamedly white only, including the schools of Gods remnant people!

Black SDA is a great place. My guess is that black folk go there becasue they can post about the issues that concern them without having to the deal with the prejudice/ignorance/latent racism that exists elsewhere. Most of the other SDA forums are "whitesda.com" because they deal with issues from a white sda perspective.

Appreciate your comments L,

I wonder how many 'whitesda' would view this as a 'white' forum... and how would that make the large number of asians here feel.

One thing that I like about forums, is that we can not tell if a person is 'red or yellow black or white" have one leg or three. Tall, short, thick or thin, by the text provided.

The sad thing is that the poor white kid falls between the cracks. Poor white kids are disadvantaged too but there is no United Poor White Kids' College Fund. There is no National Association For The Advencment of Poor White Kids. There is no scholorship for Teachers of Poor White Folks. A poor white kid doesn't get extra points on his or her college entrance exam becuase they come from a single-parent home on food stamps.

As long as minorities insist on drawing attention to their color, society will never become colorblind and Martin Luther King's dream of a colorblind America will never come true.

I have no problem with Affirmative Action programs but they should be on the basis of class not race.

Shane's comments are proof positive as to why there is a BlackSDA forum...! BET, ebony magazine, Essence magazine.....etc. etc.

My observation was not primarily a critcism just an observation. I am a member of this forum and I do not post as often as I would like to because of time rather than anything else.

Its not a bad thing in itself to have a forum primarily from a white perspective.

The point is, and I'm sorry I didn't elucidate better, but what I was trying to say is that "BlackSDA" forum covers more population than would, say, "AfricanAmericanSDA" forum (even if the URL would be shorter).

Oh, and by the way, her ancestors are from Africa, and she is a US citizen, so the German/Italian comparison doesn't match.

I cannot make it clear enough. We should not distingish ourselves by our race. We are to be Christians. Our identity is to be with Christ. We are to take His name and become part of His body.

More and more people do not fit into a nice little racial box. What about my children? Are they white? Or are they hispanic? Or should we just call them half-breeds? What about folks like Tiger Woods? Is he asian, european, black or native american?

It is wrong to use race to classify people. We are all human beings. Christ shed His blood for each of us. I understand and agree that special provisions should be made to give the historically oppressed a little advantage. However the poor white kids should be included in that and the previldged blacks kids shouldn't be. The distinction should be made by class not race.

Re: "We have Black History month. Why not White History Month."

Recently I took part in a special service during Black History Month. In my part, I mentioned several people probably little known by most of us.

It is (was) of interest to me that I was told not to refer to them as "Black," but to call them African-Americans, which they were.

I still stand on my statment: Throughtout the years, about 15 or more, I have known people who would be offended by being called Black. I have known many of them. They commonly prefered to be called African-Americans. I know that there are people with dark colored skin who are not African-Americans.

Shane has brought to the forefront a fundamental issue in race relations. I have worked in race relations, off and on, for the Federal (US) Government for 15 or so years.

Shane has phrased his comment in terms of Christianity. That is a valid aspect of this issue. But, for the Federal Government, it is not. So, I will comment outside of Shane's focus on Christianity.

That fundamental issue is: Should society attempt to subsume all ethnic/racial/cultureal/etc. groups into one big melting pot, a so-called tomato soup blend?

Or should society attempt to have a mince-meat pie variety in which such groups remain seperate, yet contribute to the overall whole, the mince-meat pie.

Frankly there are people on both sides of the issue who call people on the other side racist, for the position that they take.

The question is valid that Shane has raised, even if I have changed its focus some.

I see no issue with Black history month or an academic study of black culture. These are simple realities that exist. Blacks have a history that can be studied. Blacks have a culture that can be studied.

The problem I have is when blacks, hispanics or any other racial group want to create exclusive organizations based on race. Or when organizations give racial preferences to certain groups. This is what I believe to be counter-productive.

Walter Williams says that when he was a little boy he was colored, then they told him he was negro, then they told him he was black. Now he says they are telling him he is african american and he clarifies that he still looks the same in the mirror.

Inequities in what way?

I believe it's a cultural issue. For example on school campuses you'll find African-American, Latino, Indian, Japanese, Korean clubs etc. I'm pretty sure that Asian clubs et al. aren't redressing any inequities BlackSDA goes along with this. It's maintaining one's cultural identity.

In effect we cannot distinguish ourselves by race because we are all part of the human race. The term race is misleading but....

There is no conflict with being a Christian and speaking of and identifying his/her ethnic origin. It is a wonderful spectacle to see the different races in our church celebrate their cultues and speak proudly of their country. We are different and what unifies is Christ. In Christ our cultures are a cause for celebration and wonder at the creativity of God.

No one need be threatened when someone speaks forcefullly and clearly about who he is.

I speak about who I am as a black man with pride and joy don't be ofended just seek to understand.

Who said we had to have neat racial boxes. Call yourself whatever you want and celebrate your origins. Its interesting that many white people I have spoken to have a problem with people calling describing themselves by their ethnic orgins. The western world spend so many centuries naming countries and giving names to blacks and indians, asians that all of a sudden folks want to say 'Can't we all just get along"....thats funny!

your children Shane

Whatever ethnicity they claim is up to them, who do they hang out with? who do they feel comfortable with? which culture genuinely accepts them?........let me guess!....hmmmm The whole point is I don't put them in a box...they choose for themselves.

These distictions are not artificial they are real. The lines were drawn hundred of years ago.

I know my black six year old son is seen through different eyes than his white counterpart. Its my job to teach about who he is as a black boy and where he comes from. He won't get that from most white teachers or from the history. channel

As a pastor I pastor/preach to different cultures in different ways becasue I am sensitive to their needs and perpectives. I take note of the differences because I care.

By the way, quoting Walter Williams is like quoting Ralph Nader

Grrr ok take 3 in trying to get this program to post.

I agree with Lazarus in that every month is white history month. How many of you out there know that May is Asian/Pacific American history month? Or that Sept/Oct is Hispanic history month? And that November is American Indian history month? Lets push to have this history taught in schools too. How many of us have learn anything about the people we took this country from?
