Out of all your latest pictures, I kept coming back to this one. It's almost surreal. I get the feeling that everything is almost computer generated except for the dove. The dove is only real feature in the pic. I really, really like this picture.

That hadn't occurred to me before, but come to think of it, I can see what you mean. I waited for over two hours for a dove to get into that perfect position, too, and now I'm glad I did. It really makes the picture, as you say.

The exposure was made on a 4x5 Tri-X negative in a "field camera"-- you know, one of those old cameras where you see the image reversed and you have to wear that cloth over your head.

Don't feel bad, but it's Mrs. Clark. She may look somewhat masculine. But thanks-- you're right, her personality does come through. She was sitting just inside an open window and the rest of the cabin was unlighted because she had no electricity. I lived with the family for over a month before I felt at liberty to start taking photographs.

There you go!

She was a wonderful person, the mother of 3 sons and 2 daughters. She spoke no English but only Navaho, and she made great Navaho bread and lamb stew on a stove, a picture of which I will post right now. I will also post a picture of her and her husband outside their cabin.

Many of the Navahos had these kinds of stoves in their homes. They made good indian bread and delicious lamb stew on it.

We talked for over an hour in the Southern Pacific train-yards while I made a few exposures. He showed me a book with his picture in it of when he was a Marine fighting the Japanese during World War II.

John, your photos are amazingly beautiful. God has most assuredly blessed you with the gift of vision and insight into the human soul. Because you've embraced that gift and have shared it with us, I am truly blessed. Thank you.

Me too! I'm excitedly looking forward to seeing your pictures from the convention this fall. And in the meantime - more like you have shown us - portraits, cityscenes, landscapes.
