Liz Posted April 14, 2009 Posted April 14, 2009 How much do ya'll tip ya'll's hairdresser or barber? When the hair cut costs 12 or 13 dollars how much do you tip? Also if the whole family is getting a haircut, do you tip per person or on the whole ticket? Does it matter how long the person takes on your hair? Like if it only takes 20 minutes, do you factor that in or not? Quote For what will a man be profited, if he gains the whole world, and forfeits his soul? Liz Posted April 14, 2009 Author Posted April 14, 2009 So does the price of the haircut matter? Or is it just a 5 dollar tip no matter what? Outta Here Posted April 14, 2009 Posted April 14, 2009 For a 12 or 13 dollar haircut, a $5 tip is what I give. From what I understand a 10% tip is traditional, but a 20% tip is standard. I don't like to fumble around with change, so I just give the hair-dresser a $5 bill for each haircut. Having said that, however, my husband cuts his own hair; I cut my son's hair; and my daughter and I get haircuts only twice a year (and sometimes not even that often). So for us, it's a maximum of approximately $80 a year for salon services--not a big expense, really. Quote
GreatLakesGramma Posted April 14, 2009 Posted April 14, 2009 I don't tip. I can't afford it. There is no such thing as a $12 or $13 haircut where I live. The cheapest you can get is $15, and that's a quickie chop job. But I cut my own hair. I only go to the beauty shop when I need something else done I can't do myself, which is always much more expensive. Last time I went to a beauty school, where a friend of my son who is studying there did it for me. It was still expensive, but not as bad as locally. And I got a really good haircut out of it too. Liz Posted April 14, 2009 Author Posted April 14, 2009 I AM sure that barbers and beauticians get at leastminimum wages waiters and waitresses still make under minimum wages.... so I do tip them.... dgrimm60 I also was wondering if they do make minimum wage. GreatLakesGramma Posted April 14, 2009 Posted April 14, 2009 Some beauticians are self-employed, even though they work in salons owned by others. They get all the money paid for their services and commission on products they sell, then pay rent for their chair, buy their own supplies, and divide the costs of magazines, coffee, advertising, etc., among all who work there. I used to do the bookkeeping for a beautician who worked this way. Others get paid hourly, plus commission for their services and sales. Some salons pay well, others pay less. The place where I used to get my hair done was the most expensive place in town, and they paid their staff well. I didn't even know they accepted tips until I'd been going there for 2 or 3 years, because the receptionist never mentioned it when I paid. Cosmin M. Posted April 14, 2009 Posted April 14, 2009 Sometimes, my father gives them $10. When we eat out it is normally $20. But we don't eat out so much. He decides by the quality of what they did/gave us. Quote
Members phkrause Posted April 15, 2009 Members Posted April 15, 2009 I do that also. If service is lousy than my tip will not be that big. If service is good than I will give a good tip. We used to go out a few times a month. I prefer eating at home. pk Quote phkrause When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; But when a wicked man rules, the people groan. Proverbs 29;2
Woody Posted April 15, 2009 Posted April 15, 2009 I've always wondered about this : Why does one leave a 'tip' for lousy service? I thought a tip was for Good service only. Quote May we be one so that the world may be won. Christian from the cradle to the grave I believe in Hematology. Â
Woody Posted April 15, 2009 Posted April 15, 2009 Is this something like Obama's bailouts? Do we have to bail out the waiters? I EXPECT good service. No tip is given for good service. That is covered in the cost of the food. But, if I see that someone is going out of there way with exceptional service ... then I tip. Of course .... I am a Republican for those that don't know. And I expect people to earn their money the old fashioned way. Quote May we be one so that the world may be won. Christian from the cradle to the grave I believe in Hematology. Â
Woody Posted April 15, 2009 Posted April 15, 2009 Okay ... my son used to wait tables. He would earn more in tips than I earned in wages and I had a great job at the Hospital. Quote May we be one so that the world may be won. Christian from the cradle to the grave I believe in Hematology. Â
Woody Posted April 15, 2009 Posted April 15, 2009 Is it my fault that the owner is stingy. I dont' need to further facilitate this miscarriage of justice. The answer is to force the owner to pay a decent wage. And if you don't like the wage ... don't go to work there. Quote May we be one so that the world may be won. Woody Posted April 15, 2009 Posted April 15, 2009 Same with the Obama bailouts Quote May we be one so that the world may be won. Christian from the cradle to the grave I believe in Hematology. Â
Members phkrause Posted April 15, 2009 Members Posted April 15, 2009 I thought it was illegal to pay less than minimum wage! pk Quote phkrause When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; But when a wicked man rules, the people groan. Proverbs 29;2
Woody Posted April 15, 2009 Posted April 15, 2009 I thought it was illegal to pay less than minimum wage! pk Which minimum wage are we talking about? Federal or State? I think it depends upon the State. Quote May we be one so that the world may be won. Christian from the cradle to the grave I believe in Hematology. Â
Members phkrause Posted April 15, 2009 Members Posted April 15, 2009 Oh I didn't realize that there were 2 different pay scales, my bad. pk Quote phkrause When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; But when a wicked man rules, the people groan. Proverbs 29;2
Woody Posted April 15, 2009 Posted April 15, 2009 Well ... I think it depends upon which one is the highest. The Federal is a minimum. But the State can decide to require higher. I may be wrong. Quote May we be one so that the world may be won. Christian from the cradle to the grave I believe in Hematology. Â
Woody Posted April 15, 2009 Posted April 15, 2009 I recall making $1.65 an hour and I was thrilled. Quote May we be one so that the world may be won. Christian from the cradle to the grave I believe in Hematology. Â
Woody Posted April 15, 2009 Posted April 15, 2009 Times have changed. Whoops ... I used that word change. Quote May we be one so that the world may be won. Christian from the cradle to the grave I believe in Hematology. Â

The answer is to force the owner to pay a decent wage. And if you don't like the wage ... don't go to work there. If the owner were to pay a decent wage to the wait staff, then the cost of dining would increase. Either way, it comes out of the pockets of the ones dining. My suggestion for those who don't like paying for wait staff services: don't use their services. Eat at home or at fast food restaurants where the "wait staff" is the customer himself. Quote
guibox Posted April 15, 2009 Posted April 15, 2009 If you can get around the gratuitous coarse and crude language and constant use of the 'F' word in nearly every sentence, Quentin Tarantino's movie, 'Reservoir Dogs' has a humorous conversation about tipping at the beginning of the movie. It almost convinced me not to tip! Maybe later I will find it and edit it for content to put on here. It is quite humorous (and very logical!). Quote www.corbel.theacaistory.com
