Dr. Shane Posted April 19, 2009 Posted April 19, 2009 Sad to say, not everyone is smart enough to run a business. And others are smart enough but not disciplined enough. Good business people are not born, they are made. In many parts of the country there are not free business classes. And even in parts of the country where there are, many single mothers waiting tables don't have the time to take advantage of them. Quote Pastoral Family Counselor... GreatLakesGramma Posted April 19, 2009 Posted April 19, 2009 My husband's employers (husband and wife) went for a whole year without pay one year when the economy in Michigan was very bad. They lived on their savings and even spent thousands of dollars of their personal savings going ahead with the construction of a new facility, since it was their own employees doing most of the work, and it kept them off Unemployment. We appreciate their genuine concern for the well-being of their employees, and their sense of responsibility for them, but not all of their employees do. Some are envious of the amount of vacation time they take and how much they own. Quote Catherine God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. Psalm 73:26. Liz Posted April 19, 2009 Author Posted April 19, 2009 How about staying at hotels? Do ya'll tip the people there? The housekeeping staff? What about if you use the shuttle? The people that fixes the breakfast? And again, are there rules for this type of tipping? Is it a percentage of the total bill, or just a couple of bucks? Dr. Shane Posted April 19, 2009 Posted April 19, 2009 Most full-service stations can only be found in the up-scale neighborhoods. However I think self-service is illegal in the states of New Jersey and Oregon so all stations are full-service. Quote Pastoral Family Counselor... Key Guy Posted April 19, 2009 Posted April 19, 2009 It is selfish to allow a waitress to deliver food and serve you and then cheat her out of her tip. Indeed. Very selfish! Now if she dumps your food on the floor she doesn't deserve a tip but if she gets it on the table she has performed a service. The price on the menu is what we pay the restaurant. We pay the waitress separately. That is how the system works. If you don't like it go to McDonald's. They do things differently. Quote
Key Guy Posted April 19, 2009 Posted April 19, 2009 Quote: I have been a AAA member for many years and never knew that anyone tipped wrecker drivers. It certainly is a skilled position since they have to have a commercial driver's license. Who said I was a 'wrecker' driver? I do light roadside assists like lockouts, lost keys, tire changes, gas deliveries, jump starts. I do residential and commercial lock service, too (not AAA), along with safe service and door access control systems. Our tow truck operators down here make pretty good tips. They hustle and they are quite courteous. I suppose our rates should be for the van to show up, but my labor should be extra, paid for by tips. Pay for the keys, but pay me a tip to put them into your hand. I'll show up with the gas can, but tip me to pour the gas into your car's tank. Twenty two years ago, I borrowed $4,000 from a friend (the bank said I was too risky) and started my business. I worked like a dog for 6 years before the customers called regularly enough for me to back off and start having a life. Our small corporation has been very good to us, not to mention others that we have helped along the way. Mrs KeyGuy joined up with me when we married in '93 and we've enjoyed millions of dollars in sales over the years. God has blessed. We have done our best to be good stewards of the blessings. God blesses people all of the time. He WANTS us to be successful. It's really up to us to take Him at His word and be willing to work hard to get there. Quote
Outta Here Posted April 19, 2009 Posted April 19, 2009 That logic does not hold up. You cannot tell me that the menu price of a restaurant does not include getting my food to the table. I don't even know how to respond to such a goofy statement. It's like saying the taxi rate does not include the driver. The menu prices at restaurants do not include the cost of wait staff beyond the minimum wage earnings they are paid as required by law. In the state I live in, this "minimum wage" earning is actually below the standard minimum wage. The wait staff is required to pay taxes on a certain percentage of sales, however. This amount is equivalent to what they would have earned had they been employed in a non-tip dependant occupation. Quote

Members phkrause Posted April 19, 2009 Members Posted April 19, 2009 Your right Amelia, now that you mention the attendants at the restrooms. hahaha they even handed out the paper. My Mom once asked them, "Do you think one piece is going to be enough for cleaning up my granddaughter?" Ya I guess they do want tipping for everything. I had forgotten. Thanks for the reminder of the restroom's. hahahahaha pk Quote phkrause When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; But when a wicked man rules, the people groan. Proverbs 29;2

Dr. Shane Posted April 19, 2009 Posted April 19, 2009 You cannot tell me that the menu price of a restaurant does not include getting my food to the table. When the restaurant owner sits down and figures out how much to charge for each meal, he or she does not figure in the cost of paying the waiting staff livable wages because that is picked up directly by the customers in the form of a tip. Thus it is not included in the cost of the food. Those that do not pay a tip are taking advantage of the waitress or waiter. They are like parasites living off a host. If it wasn't for other customers paying an honorable tip the waitress wouldn't be able to afford to work there and deliver the dishonorable customer his or her food. Amelia Posted April 19, 2009 Posted April 19, 2009 Food stuffs and meals are a separate cost. Wait staff would come under operating costs along with lights, heat etc. I agree that the cost of a meal is not planned with the wait staff in mind. Just like the cost of heating the building and paying the wait staff is not figured in with the cost of food.
