guibox Posted April 17, 2009 Posted April 17, 2009 HEY GUIBOXWELL I will be waiting for the edit edition Okay, here it is.... (Part of the opening scene of Quentin Tarantino's movie, "Reservoir Dogs"...the severely edited version as edited by guibox, with apologies to QT.) The scenario is a bunch of guys sitting around a table in a café. The waitress brings them their bill and they have to tip. NICE GUY EDDIE Okay, everybody cough up green for the little lady. (Everybody whips out a buck, and throws it on the table. Everybody, that is, except Mr. Pink.) NICE GUY EDDIE C'mon, throw in a buck. MR. PINK Uh-uh. I don't tip. NICE GUY EDDIE Whaddaya mean you don't tip? MR. PINK I don't believe in it. NICE GUY EDDIE You don't believe in tipping? MR. WHITE Do you have any idea what these ladies make? They make nothing. MR. PINK Don't give me that. She don't make enough money, she can quit. NICE GUY EDDIE So let's get this straight. You never ever tip? MR. PINK I don't tip because society says I gotta. I tip when somebody deserves a tip. When somebody really puts forth an effort, they deserve a little something extra. But this tipping automatically...that’s for the birds. As far as I'm concerned, they're just doin' their job. MR. BLUE Our girl was nice. MR. PINK Our girl was okay. She didn't do anything special. Look, I ordered coffee. Now we've been here a long time, and she's only filled my cup three times. When I order coffee,I want it filled six times. MR. WHITE What if she's too busy? MR. PINK The words "too busy" shouldn't be in a waitress' vocabulary. NICE GUY EDDIE Excuse me, Mr. Pink, but the last thing you need is another cup of coffee. MR. PINK These ladies aren't starvin to death. They make minimum wage. When I worked for minimum wage, I wasn't lucky enough to have a job that society deemed tipworthy. NICE GUY EDDIE Ahh, now we're getting down to it. It's not just that he's cheap, it’s that he couldn’t get a waitressing job. MR.ORANGE It's that too. MR. WHITE So you don't care that they're counting on your tip to live? (Mr. Pink rubs two of his fingers together). MR. PINK Do you know what this is? It's the world's smallest violin, playing just for the waitresses. MR. WHITE You don't have any idea what you're talking about. These people bust their backs. This is a hard job. MR. PINK So's working at McDonald's, but you don't feel the need to tip them. They're servin ya food, you should tip em. But no, society says tip ‘these guys over here’, but not those guys over there. That's stupid. MR. WHITE They work harder than the kids at McDonald's. MR. PINK Oh yeah? I don't see them cleaning fryers. MR. WHITE These people are taxed on the tips they make. When you stiff 'em,you cost them money. Waitressing is the number one occupation for female non-college graduates in this country. It's the one job basically any woman can get and make a living on. The reason is because of tips. MR. PINK Forget all that! Hey, I'm very sorry that the government taxes their tips. That's messed up. But that ain't my fault. It would appear that waitresses are just one of the many groups the government hoses on a regular basis. You show me a paper says the government shouldn't do that, I'll sign it. Put it to a vote, I'll vote for it. But what I won't do is play ball. And this non-college garbage you're telling me, I got two words for that: "Learn to type." Cause if you're expecting me to help out with the rent, you're in for a big surprise. MR. ORANGE He's convinced me. Give me my dollar back. Quote www.corbel.theacaistory.com

Dr. Shane Posted April 18, 2009 Posted April 18, 2009 Is it my fault that the owner is stingy. I don't need to further facilitate this miscarriage of justice. The answer is to force the owner to pay a decent wage. And if you don't like the wage ... don't go to work there. The answer is for people to pay for what they get. In the restaurant business, for example, it is expected that a waiter or waitress will receive a 15% tip for average service. Less for poor service and more for great service. Those that don't want to leave a tip should go to McDonalds where a tip is not expected. If a law was passed that restaurant owners had to pay waitress and waiters more so no tips were expected it would actually result in waiters and waitresses earning less - not more. Working as a waitress or waiter in a restaurant is a profession that allows many people with little skills to earn a fair living. Those that have little education but are friendly and ambitious can earn more serving tables than many other jobs would offer them. As a child I grew up in a single-parent welfare home. My mother was a high-school drop-out. She had many jobs but we were best off financially when she was serving tables. Quote Pastoral Family Counselor... Dr. Shane Posted April 18, 2009 Posted April 18, 2009 Nobody seems interested in bailing out restaurants. I think it was Oprah that had a show about how Americans should cut back and not eat out as much. If many Americans follow that advice it will certainly lead to more unemployment and small business failure. Quote Pastoral Family Counselor... guibox Posted April 18, 2009 Posted April 18, 2009 Sounds to me like Mr. Pink is just a selfish guy that doesn't care about anyone other than himself. That doesn't convince me not to tip. Perhaps, but he does make a good point. Why do we feel the obligation to tip a waitress at a cafe, coffee shop or restaurant, but not those at a fast food place? I'm also thinking of those people in Burger King etc, who's main job there is to clean off and spray the tables, dump the trays in the garbage and empty them. Where are the tips for them? We had dang near 5 star service in a Steak N' Shake in Tennessee once and have been to some restaurants where all the waitress did was take our order, pour water, come back and then disappear for the rest of the evening with nary a word. That doesn't deserve any tip, never mind the obligatory 15%. The SN'S guy got our tip, but not the waitress. Therefore, for the most part, I only give where deserved...just like Mr.Pink! :) Quote www.corbel.theacaistory.com
Key Guy Posted April 18, 2009 Posted April 18, 2009 In my line of work, I earn tips. It's not an everyday thing, but it's pretty good spending cash (yeah I report it). > I've been tipped as high as $50 and as low as $1 > It's common to receive tips in a resort setting > The locals easily tip more than the tourists > People in expensive cars tip less than the 'common' folk > It seem that most of my tips are of the 'keep the change' variety > It doesn't matter how well you work or how nice you are, some tip, some don't I think a person should be tipped for going beyond what is expected of them. Just having a restaurant server take your order and deliver your food doesn't qualify in my opinion. I still tip, but I don't WANT to. In Key West, servers, taxi drivers, concierge people, bellhops, pool attendants, bartenders/maids, tour guides, service techs, all expect and depend on tips. Quote
Moderators Bravus Posted April 18, 2009 Moderators Posted April 18, 2009 Have to admit it was a relief to move back to Australia where we don't tip. It's not the money - I like to be generous and would typically over-tip particularly for good and friendly service. It's more the 'do I or don't I in this instance' and the 'how much?' and also the slightly embarrassing feeling that it's condescending, like a noble tossing a coin to a servant. In Australia service staff are just paid a decent living wage and the bill is the bill. Quote Truth is important

Moderators Bravus Posted April 18, 2009 Moderators Posted April 18, 2009 That's an excellent and very clear way of thinking about it, Shane. Quote Truth is important
Dr. Shane Posted April 18, 2009 Posted April 18, 2009 In Australia service staff are just paid a decent living wage and the bill is the bill. That is fine for Australia but the old saying is, 'when in Rome do as the Romans'. When traveling to other countries where tips are expected, it is only right to tip. In Mexico all the bag boys at the grocery stores get tips. They get no other wages. When a person goes to the grocery store they are expected to tip. In the US, waitresses are paid a small wage - less than minimum wage. There is a reason for that. They must report their tips and pay taxes on them. They report their tips at the end of each shift. The employer than withholds their taxes on their tips from their paycheck. Basically, the hourly wage they earn should be enough to cover the taxes on their tips. They pay their bills, buy their food and cloth their children with the money they get in tips. Quote Pastoral Family Counselor... Find me at www.PostumCafe.com Author of Peculiar Christianity
Members phkrause Posted April 18, 2009 Members Posted April 18, 2009 Now that I like. That's the way it should be. Not sure about europe. Was there a number years ago and don't recall having to tip. Key Guy Posted April 18, 2009 Posted April 18, 2009 Quote: The fact is when we fail to tip we are stealing the wages of the person working in the tip profession. Christ said, "the labourer is worthy of his hire". If we are going to go someplace and have someone bring us our food, we need to pay them. If we fail to do so we have just stolen their services. We accepted their services and paid them nothing for it. That is stealing. Now if we got poor service than we leave a smaller tip. The guideline is 15% for average service. Pay more for better service and less for poorer service. But we pay for what we get. If the waitress only brought the food and never came back to check on how things were, then she doesn't deserve 15%, but she still deserves something - she did bring the food - she performed a service. I would buy that if it weren't for the fact that I already paid for the service. > If I paid $15.00 for the taxi ride, then why would I pay the driver extra $ for doing what he was contracted (employed) to do? He or she was already paid from the taxi rate. > If I paid $12 for a meal, why should I pay the server more to do what the server was already hired to do? If you tell me that they are not paid enough, that is an issue between the employee and the employer. If I need to pay extra to have my order taken and my meal delivered, then I should have the option of getting up and getting my plate from the chef myself. If I am expected to routinely pay the taxi driver over and above the rates, then the I should have the option of slipping behind the wheel and driving myself around. Fact is, the taxi rates include the driver! And if I am to pay extra to pull a piece or two of luggage from the trunk, then let ME make that decision. I should be allowed to choose between putting my back at risk or the driver's. Quote
