Would someone please show me where Jesus Christ said that the fulfillment of the Law/Covenant/10 Commandments means that it is laid aside or done away with? Maybe I just don't understand the terminology. Is there any hard evidence from the writings of any of the eyewitness disciples (Matthew, Mark for Peter, John) that confirms that the Law now has no bearing on how we achieve salvation? I have not been able to find any eyewitness account where Jesus said we are no longer under Law but under grace. Help!

If you are walking in the Spirit you are not under the law. "But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law."(Galatians 5:18) If we try to follow the law we never will. It will create many frustrations as you struggle to follow it. You will likely give up. Fulfilling the law must become natural, and that is only done through Christ working inside of us. Which isn't done in an instant. It is a process of sanctification. Stop looking to the law, and look to Christ instead.

Dear Lutz, are you saying that righteousness is just a myth? And that no one was righteous before Christ's death because the Holy Spirit had not yet been given to anyone?

And all this time I thought God found David and Joseph to be righteous.

I'm just hoping that if you and I ever meet on this earth, you'll feel comfortable enough to put yourself under the "curse" long enough to not murder me.

But if I hate you in the law's eyes I've murdered you. The law reads your thoughts and intentions. It reads your motives...even the so called good things you do. Any works with a selfish motive is in the law's eyes sin. And according to the law you must die forever. That's why I don't want to be under law.

Here's the curse:

Gal 3:10 All who rely on the works of the law [salvation by law] are under a curse, for it is written: "Cursed is everyone who does not continue to do everything written in the Book of the Law." 11 Clearly no one is justified before God by the law, because, "The just by faith shall live." 12 The law is not based on faith; on the contrary, "The man who does these things will by them (the rules) live." 13 Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us, for it is written: "Cursed is everyone who is hung on a tree."

(Gal. 3:10-13) If Paul is saying that Jesus Christ was cursed because He hung from a tree, then I don't want to have anything to do with Paul's writings! Personally, I will stick with what Jesus said and taught.

BTW--the ten commandments don't have anything to do with just thinking something--please read them. When Jesus said thinking evil thoughts will get you into trouble He was right, because the same thing was said to Cain in Gen.4:7.

It's Satan who wants us to make such a difference between the various sacred books and inspired writers of the Scriptures.

John 3:16-17

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. [17] For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.

Please have an open mind and read the following in its entirety:

The Cross of Christ - Forsaken of God

Here's a sample:

“Then came Jesus forth, wearing the crown of thorns (which the Roman soldiers put there out of mockery), dressed in a purple robe.” And Pilate said to the Jews, “Behold the man!” (As much as to say, “I think this is as much as He deserves.”) “When the chief priests therefore and officers saw Him, they cried out saying: ‘Crucify Him, crucify Him.’ ” And Pilate responded, “Take you Him and crucify Him, for I find no fault in Him” (John 19:5,6). What he was saying was simply, “As far as Roman law is concerned, this man does not deserve crucifixion.” But the Jews had to give a reason, so they responded: “The Jews answered him, ‘We have a law, and by our law He ought to die, because He made Himself the Son of God’ ” (John 19:7).

Sure it does....You must look beyond the letter and understand the spirit of the law. For example, "coveting" is not an act, but rather a thought. I can lust or covet after your car all day and no policeman will arrest me, but under God's law I stand condemned because the law not only judges the outward actions, but the thoughts and intents of the mind.

Jesus: Matt 5:21 "You have heard that it was said to the people long ago, 'Do not murder, and anyone who murders will be subject to judgment.' 22 But I tell you that anyone who is angry with his brother will be subject to judgment.

The Holy Spirit is in every sinner Jesus died to redeem ---- Everybody ---- “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.” Rom. 3:23. It’s impossible for a sinner to come to God without the Holy Spirit. Therefore the Holy Spirit is in all sinful flesh. As long as the breath of life is in the person, the Holy Spirit is there entreating us to repent and turn from sin. Repenting would be impossible without the influence of the Holy Spirit. (The unpardonable sin of Matt. 12:31, 32 is the complete rejection of the Holy Spirit. If we completely reject the One who can save us, there is nothing more God can do. There’s no other way to be saved.) No, a sinner cannot come to God unless the Holy Spirit draws him, and this drawing must come from within the sinner himself. Jesus said, in John 15:16, “Ye have not chosen Me, but I have chosen you.” It’s because Christ chose us that empowers us to choose Him. It’s impossible for us to choose God, if God hadn’t chosen us first. 1 John 4:19 says: “We love Him, because He first loved us.” Again, it’s Christ’s love that enables us to love Him. It’s impossible for it to be the other way around. We come to God, because He first came to us. We love God, because He first loved us. We choose God because He first chose us, and all these wonderful invitations are of the Holy Spirit. If Jesus isn’t in all sinful flesh, through the Holy Spirit, then those without Him are hopelessly lost, and Jesus would be destroying those lacking His presence ---- BUT THAT’S IMPOSSIBLE, BECAUSE JESUS IS THE CREATOR, NOT THE DESTROYER!

Someone might say, “If the Holy Spirit is in everybody, then how do you explain Acts 2:4: “And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost.” This simply means the Holy Spirit that dwelled in them gave them more knowledge and power, because they allowed the Holy Spirit to lead them in a greater measure by their submission to Him. Whenever the terms: “Filled with the Holy Spirit,” “Received the Holy Spirit,” “The Holy Spirit was given,” “The Holy Spirit fell on,” etc., these all confirm that the Holy Spirit’s Influence was much more accepted, and therefore He was much more manifested to them, and through them TO A GREATER DEGREE. Since the Holy Spirit is the only Agent God can use to communicate directly to us, they who give themselves more fully to Him become more receptive to His Holy Influence. In other words: They have a higher awareness of God, because they place themselves under the guidance of the Holy Spirit’s leadership MORE HIGHLY. “The Unpardonable Sin (Matt. 12:31, 32)” is the reverse: Absolute rejection of the Holy Spirit. Then the wrath of God comes: “God gave them up (Rom. 1:18-28).” Actually, since Jesus never leaves nor forsakes anyone, they give themselves up to suffer the consequences of their own choices.

Let’s take it a step further. The Holy Spirit has always been upon the earth (Gen. 1:2; Ez. 11:24; 2 Pet. 1:21), Right? But if this is true, why did Jesus tell His disciples, “I will pray the Father, and He shall give you another Comforter.” John 14:16. We know this “Comforter” is the Holy Spirit, because verse 26 says, “…the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost.” Now notice what comes next, “…Whom the Father will send IN MY NAME.” From the very beginning the Holy Spirit has been unceasingly working to draw sinners out from the world, to convict us of our sins, and place within our hearts a desire to repent and turn from our evil ways ---- BUT THE HOLY SPIRIT COULD NOT BE “THE COMFORTER” UNTIL JESUS EXPERIENCED LIFE IN THIS SINFUL WORLD AS ONE OF US. When God became Man, He learned what it was like to be tempted (compare James 1:13). Therefore God, the Holy Spirit, became “The Comforter” to us, “For we have not an High Priest (Jesus) which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; BUT WAS IN ALL POINTS TEMPTED LIKE AS WE ARE, yet without sin (yet without sinning).” Heb. 4:15. “For in that He Himself has suffered, being tempted, HE IS ABLE TO AID (COMFORT) THOSE WHO ARE TEMPTED.” Heb. 2:18, N.K.J.V. Again, if Jesus Christ is not in all sinful beings, then they who are without Him are hopelessly lost. That is completely uncharacteristic of the Creator and Redeemer.

Prepare for the coming of Jesus!!

Dr. Rich,

Quote:
(Gal. 3:10-13) If Paul is saying that Jesus Christ was cursed because He hung from a tree, then I don't want to have anything to do with Paul's writings! Personally, I will stick with what Jesus said and taught.

Well, then perhaps you need to hear it from the OT and the words of Christ...

Deuteronomy 21:22, 23 -

22 "If a man has committed a sin worthy of death and he is put to death, and you hang him on a tree,

23 his corpse shall not hang all night on the tree, but you shall surely bury him on the same day (for he who is hanged is accursed of God), so that you do not defile your land which the LORD your God gives you as an inheritance."

The illustration of what God meant with this passage is found in Joshua 10:26, where the context is Joshua capturing the 5 Amorite kings who had brought their people out to attack the people of God...

26 "So afterward Joshua struck them and put them to death, and he hanged them on five trees; and they hung on the trees until evening."

These Amorite kings hung between heaven and earth as condemned before God and cursed, according to the commandment of the Lord.

Now, let's explore a couple of things...what did Christ mean when He said this...?

John 12:31-33

31 "Now judgment is upon this world; now the ruler of this world will be cast out.

32 "And I, if I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all men to Myself."

33 But He was saying this to indicate the kind of death by which He was to die."

Christ knew He was going to assume upon Himself the curse of sin, and taste it for each of us.

Then there is Peter, saying this before the Sanhedrin...

Acts 5:27-33

28 " "saying, "We gave you strict orders not to continue teaching in this name, and yet, you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching and intend to bring this man's blood upon us."

29 But Peter and the apostles answered, "We must obey God rather than men.

30 "The God of our fathers raised up Jesus, whom you had put to death by hanging Him on a cross.

31 "He is the one whom God exalted to His right hand as a Prince and a Savior, to grant repentance to Israel, and forgiveness of sins.

32 "And we are witnesses of these things; and so is the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to those who obey Him."

33 But when they heard this, they were cut to the quick and intended to kill them."

Peter and John nearly lost their lives for this statement of truth.

Peter repeats this same fact again to Cornelius and his family in Acts 10:38-40

38 "You know of Jesus of Nazareth, how God anointed Him with the Holy Spirit and with power, and how He went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him.

39 "We are witnesses of all the things He did both in the land of the Jews and in Jerusalem. They also put Him to death by hanging Him on a cross.

40 "God raised Him up on the third day and granted that He become visible"

The Jews knew what they were wanting to declare of Christ, when they hung Him on the Cross - that He was accursed of God.

Now then, Peter has his knowledge there...where did Paul pick up his? Certainly not from Peter...

Galatians 1:11, 12

11 "For I would have you know, brethren, that the gospel which was preached by me is not according to man.

12 For I neither received it from man, nor was I taught it, but I received it through a revelation of Jesus Christ."

It seems to me very incongruous to accept a testimony from three witnesses one favors, but reject out of hand the same testimony from a fourth (who got it from the Chief of the other three)...yet that is what you have done with your irrational rejection of Paul's testimony in Galatians.

Your "false apostle" was in reality declaring the truth - Jesus became the curse for us, hung on a tree as cursed before God. Paul simply quoted Deuteronomy 21:23 quite correctly, even as Christ attributed to Himself and Peter accurately related before two different audiences. Christ, Peter and Paul all taught the same thing.

Hmmmmm.....Any other Pauline statements needing clarification?

"As iron sharpens iron, so also does one man sharpen another" - Proverbs 27:17

"The offense of the cross is that the cross is a confession of human frailty and sin and of inability to do any good thing. To take the cross of Christ means to depend solely on Him for everything, and this is the abasement of all human pride. Men love to fancy themselves independent. But let the cross be preached, let it be made known that in man dwells no good thing and that all must be received as a gift, and straightway someone is offended." Ellet J. You would have to have committed sin to be cursed enough to be put on a tree (crucified). Jesus had no sin in Him (or place on Him), therefore the reference by Paul to Jesus hanging on a tree and being cursed does not apply. To say or even imply that Jesus should be or was cursed is blasphemous.

Well said musicman. There is no question that Jesus died on the cross. But sin (the curse of sin) could not keep Him in the grave because He was totally sinless! Your text in Dut. also state when a man (person) committed sin worthy of death-right? Well then, by your own evidence this would leave out Jesus Christ.

BTW--Paul's good friend Luke wrote Acts, didn't he?

Gal 3:10 All who rely on the works of the law [salvation by law] are under a curse, for it is written: "Cursed is everyone who does not continue to do everything written in the Book of the Law."

You have noticed, I'm sure, the text does not say the law is the curse. Nor does it say that by keeping the law you are cursed.

It specifically says, "All who rely on works of the law...", and then you say, "salvation by law". I don't believe anyone is contesting that "believing the law can save us" is not a curse. Believing that, is a curse. That still does not say the law is a curse, except this law below:

"But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members." Romans 7:23 KJV

"For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death."Romans 8:2 KJV

The law of sin and death is found from the very beginning of this world, which is the principle set down by the enemy of souls, that is the sin of unbelief, opposed to the Law of life in obedience.

"But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die."Genesis 2:17 KJV

If Adam and Eve had believed God and obeyed (kept the law), life would have continued unabated. But then came the curse, a lie, not caused by the law but a result of throwing out the law, a suggestion given by the enemy of souls. And lo and behold, the lie lives on to this day. Those who perpetuate and believe the lie will, sadly, end up where the lie (the curse) eventually will end up.

"Then the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die. For God knows that in the day you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”

So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree desirable to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate. She also gave to her husband with her, and he ate."Genesis 3:4-6 NKJV

Who told you that you were keeping the "whole law"? The whole law includes every law in the first, five books of the OT.

While Gal 3:10 might not say that the law is the curse, other statements throughout the Bible (especially the OT) do....

Yeah? He also should never have felt the wrath of God, yet He felt Gods wrath. Why?

By the Jewish law, blasphemy was death by stoning. Yet they screamed out "crucify Him!" Why? Because they wanted the curse of God to be upon Him.(Death by hanging on a tree, the cross was good enough.)

Then the entire OT Gospel symbol system - the tabernacle service - makes no sense, as it all depicted sins being transferred to the sacrifice, then transferred again via the blood to the Holy Place as testimony that death has occurred for sins committed.

If Christ did not assume your sins, and bear the death-record for them to heaven before the Father, then how are you going to stand in judgment? via your own righteousness?

Certainly not on the merit of Christ's righteousness, as you have no claim to it, based upon your own logic.

Christ (the sinless One) assuming our sins (and becoming cursed on our behalf) is only the flip side of the coin to the sinner (the sinful one) assuming Christ's righteousness(and becoming blessed to His glory).

To exclude one is to exclude the other. If one is blasphemy, the other is a mere legal fiction and fantasy on top of blasphemy...

Hence you don't understand the gospel...i.e., the genuine gospel.

1) Jesus is God...He is Deity. He is the 2nd person of the Godhead.

2) Adam sinned. Since we share his life we stand condemned, under law, which is the curse of the law - the 2nd death.

3) Jesus, as God, assumed us at the incarnation. God mysteriously combined the Deity of Christ with our fallen life in the womb of Mary. That life is our life because we all share one life - the fallen life of Adam.

4) That life, indwelt with sin ("the law of sin" - iniquity - our bent to self) died "in Christ" on the cross (see Rom 6:6/7:4).

5) Hence the law has been legally and ethically satisfied because "YOU died to the law in the body of Christ" (Rom 7:4)

Posted

Your text in Dut. also state when a man (person) committed sin worthy of death-right? Well then, by your own evidence this would leave out Jesus Christ.

Sure...because the law says "the soul that sins it must die". The Deity of Christ never sinned, not even by a thought...but, the humanity He assumed into Himself had sinned and stood under the curse.

Gal 4:4 But when the time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under law, 5 to redeem those under law, that we might receive the full rights of sons

If you are born of a woman you are a sinner, not by performance alone, but also because you share Adam's life (a life that has sinned and is in slavery to sin).

The life Jesus as God assumed was our life "born of a woman". Hence the Bible states, "He became sin" who as God knew no sin. Christ, as God, became what He wasn't by native right - sin!

Keep in mind I'm not saying Christ is a sinner. Christ is God...He has always been God, but at the incarnation He assumed us in our fallen condition. That life wasn't His, it was ours. He assumed it to liberate us from under the curse of the law.

Again, Jesus is God. At the incarnation He assumed us while remaining Himself, God. He handed over the independent use of His Deity to His Father's disposal. In return "a body was made for Him" (see Heb chapter 10). That body is our corporate life from Adam that stands condemned.

The moment Jesus assumed our life in the womb of Mary that life was made spiritually alive (much like we are "born again"). Therefore He never allowed our bent-to-self to cause Him to sin. Hence He lived a perfect life in our fallen humanity. He never, not even by a thought, said yes to sin. Therefore He fulfilled the first demand of the law: "Obey and live"

But since He assumed us...since He assumed our humanity indwelt with sin, that life had to die. Hence, "You (our life) died to the law in the body of Christ". Hence He fulfilled the 2nd demand: "disobey and die".

That's the whole point of faith, Dr. Rich.

Jesus lived a completely sinless life in the same humanity you and I have to live in - and the only thing the humanity of Christ was good for was not the reward of heaven, but a death on the cross. To further drive the point home, Christ declared many times it was NOT He who who spoke and worked, but the Father doing the work, speaking the words, in Him.

And it made humanity good enough only to be crucified.

That is why Paul writes in Ephesians 2 that salvation comes as a gift - grace through faith, and further writes that redemption comes as a result of God's creating a new human - the inner man - a true joining of man back to God.

The inner man has the Law written on the heart (Jeremiah 31:33), and has the heart of flesh, not of stone (Ezekiel 11:19, 20).

Paul was entirely correct in his letter to the Romans, in equating the status of Jesus relative to mankind as the New Adam, having the same impact upon our race as the Old Adam did when he sinned.

BUT I forget...you don't believe Paul was a "true apostle", therefore you won't accept his testimony...even though Peter himself declared Paul's testimony as on par with that of Scriptures, having the same source of inspiration.

If you wish to keep Christ Jesus separate, far away, and untouched by our infirmities, go ahead. But like I asked earlier - how are you going to stand before the Throne of God, having no Kinsman Redeemer to represent you, having taken your sin upon Himself?

Think carefully...
