New Dishwasher

Recommended Posts

Posted

Our dishwasher went out Sunday and yesterday the repair man said there was no way to fix it, The control panel was fried and a new control panel costs as much as a new machine. bigsigh

I get paid the first and the fifteenth of each month so last night my wife and I went over our budget for our next check to see what we could slash to try and find some money for a new dishwasher. We came up with $350 that we could spend.

So today I went shopping. I found a display model at Home Depot on clearance for $99. But I don't get paid until tomorrow. runcry

Hello emergency fund pals

Thank you Dave Ramsey hifive

Now when I get paid tomorrow we just pay back our emergency fund. Now if I hadn't had that emergency fund the display only clearance model may well have been sold already and we would be paying over $300 for the new dishwasher.

Shane, did you go to a Dave Ramsey seminar? Our church sponsored a seminar by him not too long ago...

And good going on getting the demo model!!!!!!

Praise the Lord it worked out so well, Shane!

Maybe God gets a little credit, too, eh? Dave Ramsey wasn't the one who put the bargain in your path.

Our church did a Dave Ramsey "Financial Peace University" seminar and I attended it. God gets all the credit. He put Dave Ramsey in my path.

Yes, that's the same type of seminar our church sponsored. Ramsey gave out a lot of good financial advice, from what I understand. (I wasn't able to attend...unfortunately...)

Way to go on your find and the Ramsey thing, glad it all worked out. God does indeed care about the seemingly small things in our lives.

I did not grow up with a dishwasher. In fact I was about 27 when we bought this house and it already had a dishwasher in it. After using it for a few months, I thought it was clogged, so I poured draino down it. Draino makes copious amounts of bubbles when poured down a dishwasher. So many in fact that the bubbles will pour out the sides and bottom of the dishwasher. I never thought I would get all the bubbles cleaned up and I burned up the dishwasher.

I went back to the way I had always done dishes for a couple of years after that. Six or seven years ago, I got another dishwasher---I learned how to take care of it.

You don't want to know what I did to the microwave. ROFL!!

Is Dave Ramsey the guy who is on Fox as a contributor? I always wonder why if he or Suzie Orman are so good at this kind of stuff, that the previous presidents don't hire them! I've heard there advice and its nothing different than what I've heard before. We just don't do it. It seems we're always needing some else to tell us what to do, and its usually to late by than, :)

Shane, what kind of dishwasher did you get? After the repairman poked a hole in my high-end whirlpool, while replacing the heating element for a recall, I decided to replace it with a KitchenAid. For the same price as the high-end Whirlpool, I got a low-end KitchenAid, with a stainless steel interior. No one is going to poke a hole in that!

Unfortunately, I found out a low-end KitchenAid is still a low-end dishwasher. It doesn't get the dishes clean. After that Whirlpool, that always got everything clean no matter what, it is frustrating to have an expensive dishwasher that doesn't.

When we built our house, we did some research on the appliances. CR rated Kenmore either near or at the top on most of their appliances. So we went with Kenmore, from the fridge, dishwasher, oven, cooktop, microwave, washer & dryer, compactor & even the disposal. So far we have been very pleased. The dishwasher is very quiet. Their magnetic induction cooktop is super. It will heat up a larger volume of liquid faster than even a microwave!

I take it that you don't use a credit card?

Dave Ramsey says he gives the same advice as your grandmother, except he leaves his teeth in. In reality, he gives pretty much the same advice as Crown Financial Ministries. The big difference is this: Crown was founded by Larry Burkett, a Christian minister. So Crown pretty much was a Christian ministry. While Dave Ramsey is a Christian, he is not a minister. His background is real estate. His audience is much larger than just Christians. He has his own program on the Fox Business Channel.

Yes Kenmore is a very reliable appliance, and has been for many years. Which by the way is made by Whirlpool, who also is always at or near the top of the CR ratings every year.

We have always had low-end dishwashers. This one is a little lower end than our last one. We use either Cascade Complete or the Wal-Mart store brand of detergent and those both seem to work well and getting the dishes clean. We started using these after Consumer Reports endorse them as the best performing dishwasher detergents.

Hmmmm. Credit cards (I have two) give me freedom and convenience. I hate being in debt, so I don't charge anything I can't pay off at the billing period.

Absolutely. It gives you the freedom to put those sales on the card and save megabucks. Not to mention all the perks such as free gift cards. The only way to go.

Just say 'charge it'.

My Bible says, "the borrower is servant to the lender" (Prov. 22:7)

Statistically if I had used a credit card I wouldn't have bought the clearance model.

Study: Credit Cards Cause More Spending

Quote:
A four-part study found what many financial planners already knew: People spend more money when using credit cards compared to cash purchases... Financial planners have long encouraged people to avoid credit-card purchases as a way to save money.

How Credit Cards Encourage You To Overspend

Quote:
McDonald's found that the average transaction rose from $4.50 to $7.00 when customers used plastic instead of cash...

Credit card companies also encourage you to buy more by offering rewards for increased spending. Rewards are often tiered depending on how much you charge to your credit card.

Senate passes credit card reform bill

Quote:
Credit card issuers collect $15 billion each year in penalty fees, which accounts for a tenth of total revenue.

Now we know where credit card companies get money to pay those perks. That is dirty money. I want no part of it.

Those "perks" come at the cost of the poor and elderly. I don't need to steal anyone's food stamps or Social Security. God has been providing for me quite well.

The amount that you spend in excess is covered by all the perks you get. It is well worth it.

Those using credit cards have the freedom to pay whatever fees they might choose to.

I figure the heat will kill the germs even if the detergent doesn't. But then I always rinse the dishes thoroughly before putting them in the dishwasher.

[That's interesting because our Kenmore washer & dryer are made in Germany.

I would agree that those who can't control their spending should not have credit cards.

For me it's a "win-win" proposition. I get to use their money now which I pay pack at billing time. I don't have to carry cash or write a check. And I get so many air miles for every dollar I spend on the cc. I've been to Europe on one of those accumulated air miles.

Posted

It is not just an issue of those that can't control their spending. Studies have shown that the neurological activity going on when we spend cash is the same as what goes on when we feel pain. That does not happen when we use credit cards. People do not spend more when they use credit cards because they are stupid or out of control. They spend more because their brains actually process the decision to use a credit card differently than when they are spending cash.

The next concern about using credit cards is that when we do so we are actually doing business with "vulchers". Vulchers hang around waiting for something bad to happen so they can feast on the dead carcus. Credit card companies issue credit cards hoping something bad happens so they can feast on the penalties and fees. They do not want to help their customers. They want to take advantage of them. Why would I want to do business with people like that?

Air miles and other perks are paid for by the prey. They are paid for by Social Security recipients paying off $5,000 in penalties for a $1,000 balance. Nothing is free. Let's not forget that. Somebody somewhere is always paying. 16th century Englishmen enjoyed sipping cheap sugar in their tea while black African slaves worked in a Jamaican sugar plantation.

Some want to justify their credit card use because they point out they always pay their balance every month so they never pay any fees or penalties. Is that ethical? I borrow somebody's money and pay it back with no interest. That is what is known as free money. But wait. Is anything ever free? No. Someone is paying. It's grandma and the single mother with three fatherless children.

The ethical thing to do is to save up an emergency fund. Then that is our money. When we have an emergency we take out what we need and pay it back as quickly as we can. I am not depending on Vulcher State Capital to lend me emergency cash. I am not participating with Vulcher State Capital in taking advantage of the poor, elderly and irresponsible.
