The bible interprets itself...

Recommended Posts

Points to consider:

1. The bible, in its accepted current Canon is a complete and self contained expression of the will of God.

2. That laying aside pre-conceived ideas, all doctrine can be understood, using the balance of other scripture to understand it (in addition to point 3).

3. The gift of the Holy Spirit is essential for us to be able to lay aside our own ideas and to gain understanding.

4. The bible is self authenticating because of God's fingerprint that is established in History and Prophecy.

Do you agree or disagree with the above points?

Any additional points?

Disagree. I don't think it is really that simple.

Anytime one does not believe God would leave an accurate enough

written record that would give incontrovertible evidence of Who He is and what plans He has for us, those created in His image and known as the sons of God, puts himself in the position of having to work out his own salvation.

My sympathies are with them as they will need all they can get.

"Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not." 1 John 3:1 KJV

"Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is."1 John 3:2 KJV

I agree wholeheartedly. No need for an additional infallible interpreter, His sheep hear His voice.

"You may not agree with everyone. But if you are an honest man, when someone says something you disagree with it’ll drive you to the Word. If you find out that you were wrong and change your thinking then you are the better for it. If you go to the Word and find out that you were right then you have been strengthened. But either way always go to the Word!!” Billye Brim

That sounds good to me. But are YOU His sheep or am I ?

I don't need an infallible interpreter to understand the bible, your church does. I'm hearing loud and clear now that I have taken out the earplugs of ellen and the sda church.

Very well said. It seems there has always been someone or a group inspired by God to proclaim to the world His word. I have a hard time thinking He would just abandon us to our own wisdom.

We must remember that the current doctrinal understandings we have as a people (I am talking of our historical understanding and not the JSequiera/DFord type of understanding that has been filtering in), are founded on the above basic fundamental ideas.

So even if one does not accept the SOP, or the Adventist position, it is important to understand what are the core beliefs that underlie that position...

That is that Gods Word is self contained and self explanatory.

It exposites itself.

I guess I misunderstood. I agree that the Bible as we have it is sufficient for our salvation, I just thought the post was trying to say it is more.

Bible "interprets itself" is a good way to paraphrase the idea of exegesis. The study of the Bible where you lay aside all of your own agendas (even if that agenda happens to be evolutionism) and let scripture speak for itself.

1. What is the author's time and culture?

2. What has the author said on the same subject in his other letters.

3. What meaning would the words chosen by the author have had to his contemporary intended readers?

4. What have other authors of scripture said on the same subject?

Anyway - the list always brings us back to taking the author's own perspective instead of inserting a 21st century bias into the text.

Haldog, unless you know Hebrew or Greek, you are actually believing what fallible people have interpreted for us to read! Most can not read the original Hebrew of the OT so we have to depend on someone else's interpretation of that, don't we? The same for the NT greek. And even the Bible writers were not infallible, so do we believe them to actually conviene (sp) what God wants us to know from his word? EGW definitely had her faults, but if not for her we might not be where we are today. I believe she was called to make sure the church was headed in the right direction. And who knows we probably are in need of another prophet?

There was another group that had the same opinion.

I somehow doubt that will help. Some are so hardened in their opinions ... nothing will sway them. We just need to get back into the Word.

One may wonder which spirit you are listening to. Though it is not my business and it is between you and God. I will say a prayer for you. peace

And that's a good thing, Lutz13. Somehow I believe Jesus is your Companion in prayer for the same.

I have a hard time thinking He would just abandon us to our own wisdom.

It takes a personal knowledge of Him and where we fit into His plans for us, to be able to arrive at that conclusion of which I'm in full agreement.

Amen. And praise God.

And I don't really need to know everything in order to find the peace in Jesus that allows present day joy.

"Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid." John 14:27 NKJV

Speaking of which, there is also the undefined point in time, and perspective, from which St John relates much of the book of Revelation; to wit:

Rev 4:1 ... Come up hither, and I will show thee things which must be hereafter.

What is/are the reason(s) why one cannot accept that St John indeed spoke from a 21st century perspective post chapter 3 of Revelation? but for consideration of those who would read his book throughout the intervening centuries – wrote in a manner other than that which we might find more agreeable...
