Umm, so Nehemiah musta been like, what?—not Jew? Oh, really? And should one take Nehemiah at his best – the man then living in Samaria with wife and children (non-Jewish) were adjured to divorce himself from them – scrue the morality of leaving them without husband and/or father; in the lurch as it were. And the Sabbath-keeper living within walking distance from their church building do not have to drive, yes? Is a five-mile radius reasonable? Re some of the arguments posted: remember, the OT Sabbath-keeper was proscribed from lighting a fire (firing the ignition on one’s car) or leaving one’s tent upon the Sabbath day (going to church), etc. Re Sabbath-day observances: what’s the difference between utilizing the microwave ovens or Deaconesses in the Better Living Centers at potlucks and/or utilizing the grills and sevice persons at McDonald’s – as far as labor goes? As far as I can see, the only difference would be the exchange of ‘filthy lucre’: one being primarily voluntary and the other being fair recompense. Quote

Dr. Shane Posted March 1, 2010 Posted March 1, 2010 I should have clarified my statement. Modern-day Jews are legalists. I was not referring to Jews prior to the first advent - although many of them were legalists too. I have not seen anyone here claiming that driving a car or taking a bus on the Sabbath is sinful. Vital services are vital. That is why they are called "vital". Who among you, if your ox was in the ditch on the Sabbath would not pull him out? Vital work is allowed on the Sabbath. Working at McDonalds is not vital work. Quote Pastoral Family Counselor... Find me at www.PostumCafe.com Author of Peculiar Christianity

doug yowell Posted March 2, 2010 Posted March 2, 2010 It is interesting that the prophet's focus of attention was more directed at the non-Jewish, non Sabbath keeping merchants that were selling their stuff than at the Jews buying it. To remedy the problem of "working" within the gates, he sent them out and didn't want them hanging around just outside the gates either. Why didn't the prophet address the solution to the Jews that were buying the fish on the Sabbath? Was it perhaps because the actual violation was not the buying, but the selling? Notice the introductory verse 15. Those Jews engaged in their commercial occupations on the Sabbath were "testified against" by Nehemiah. This is very consistent with what I already pointed out about the 4th Commandment. What is the violation? Is it handling money? No, or we wouldn't collect an offering on Sabbath? And as some have already pointed out, what about the person that must take the bus or a taxi to church? How do they pay for that? And in a real sense, we buy services on Sabbath every time we turn on the light. That is why Orthodox Jews leave the lights off on Sabbath. And as just pointed out, the silly extent of this wrong direction results in walking up 3 flights of stairs to avoid pressing an elevator button. I shoulda read this before but now that I have I'll have to admit that I'd never thought of this slant before. Wrong to sell,OK to buy??? What kind of scrambled reasoning is this??? Like saying it's wrong to sell porn but OK to look at it?? If it's wrong to sell why is it acceptable to buy? Or vice versa? How can you do something that is unavailable? If you can't sell you can't buy...hello! Sounds like backmasking the first century Jewish playbook in order to void the commandment! Quote
