Administrators Tom Wetmore Posted March 16, 2011 Administrators Posted March 16, 2011 Rob Bell's new book Love Wins sounds like a must read... "Absurdity reigns and confusion makes it look good." "Sinless perfection is such a shallow goal." "I love God only as much as the person I love the least." *Forgiveness is always good news. And that is the gospel truth. (And finally, the ideas expressed above are solely my person views and not that of any organization with which I am associated.)
Moderators lazarus Posted March 16, 2011 Moderators Posted March 16, 2011 Is this the one that folks are saying is heretical? Great spirits have always found violent opposition from mediocrities. The latter cannot understand it when a man does not thoughtlessly submit to hereditary prejudices but honestly and courageously uses his intelligence. Einstein
Moderators John317 Posted March 16, 2011 Moderators Posted March 16, 2011 I don't now if people are saying it's heretical, but according to the book review, Bell sounds like someone who believes everyone is eventually going to be saved so that God gets what He wants. At least he think it's a possibility. I have too many other good things to read than spend time on a book which teaches that. John 3:16-17 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. [17] For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.
Administrators Gail Posted March 16, 2011 Administrators Posted March 16, 2011 I think that is the one everyone is talking about... for better or worse! Isaiah 32:17 And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.
Administrators Gail Posted March 16, 2011 Administrators Posted March 16, 2011 It is the universalistic part that is bothering the evangelicals. It probably would bother me, too, although there is no harm in wondering about things, I suppose. Having gone through the review, I don't think it's a book that I would enjoy. I like the gospel, pure and simple, albeit deep enough to stretch the mind. Isaiah 32:17 And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.
Administrators Tom Wetmore Posted March 16, 2011 Author Administrators Posted March 16, 2011 Is this the one that folks are saying is heretical? Yes, it is amazing when pre-release draws such condemnation, especially by those who probably haven't even read it. (Dogmatic condemnation of a book usually motivates me to read it... ) I watched an hour long interview of Rob before a live audience about the book. Before I did so I read the variety of comments posted about the interview. As is so often the case, after viewing it myself, I had to wonder if those people making such negative comments had actually watched the same thing I had. This is also often the case with books, which is one reason I read them for myself, especially when people react so strongly against a book.
CoAspen Posted March 16, 2011 Posted March 16, 2011 The review certainly makes the book sound interesting. I would say to those that label it this way or that with out reading are following the path that conservative christians often follow, never try to understand the other persons point of view, you might get damanged. The review sounded even sided. The emphasis on Christ is what christianity is all about.....isn't it? Life is about questions, if we have none, I would suggest it has become stagnant.

We studied that book for SS class a while back. I thought it was pretty good. I might not agree with all he says but he has some interesting thoughts. phkrause When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; But when a wicked man rules, the people groan. Proverbs 29;2

I don't think that is limited to conservative Christians. Ellen White critics tend to do the same thing. Pastoral Family Counselor... Find me at www.PostumCafe.com Author of Peculiar Christianity

Dr. Rich Posted March 17, 2011 Posted March 17, 2011 Tom? Being a lawyer you should know that it is JUSTICE that wins, not love. And Justice is not necessary love!
Dr. Shane Posted March 17, 2011 Posted March 17, 2011 God's justice springs out of His love. One cannot separate the justice of God from His love. Pastoral Family Counselor... Find me at www.PostumCafe.com Author of Peculiar Christianity

Dr. Shane Posted March 17, 2011 Posted March 17, 2011 I wouldn't want to be in heaven if ANY humans are there that I know of. I am just the opposite. I love people. I love being around people. I love talking with people. I love playing sports with people. I love watching sports with people. I love singing with people. I love making music with people. I love helping people. I love people. The only people that won't be happy in heaven are people who love sin. Since there is no sin in heaven, they would never be happy there. God is not going to change us against our will. He isn't going to take someone who loves sinning and change that person's heart unless that person desires that heart transformation. I am there. That is exactly what I want. I want to be more like Jesus. But not everyone is that way. Some people are too absorbed in self. For them, heaven would be torture. Pastoral Family Counselor... Woody Posted March 17, 2011 Posted March 17, 2011 All peoples that I know ... SIN. And I would not desire to go to heaven and live with sinners. There's plenty of that here. Dr. Shane Posted March 17, 2011 Posted March 17, 2011 Every heart is on one side of the fence or the other. Either the heart clings to sin and cherishes it OR the heart longs to be free from sin. The heart that cherishes sin would never be happy in heaven and God, loving everyone, would never place such a person where the person would be miserable for eternity. The heart longing to be free from sin will rejoice in heaven, beyond the reach of the tempter. Free at last will be his or her cry. Pastoral Family Counselor... Dr. Rich Posted March 19, 2011 Posted March 19, 2011 For those of you who believe what Paul said in 1Cor.13 about "Love", try this: Verse 4 says that love is patient, kind and IS NOT JEALOUS. Well then, I guess God is NOT love because Ex. 20:5 has God being a Jealous God. Paul said that love does not take into accounting a wrong suffered, BUT God said He will not leave him unpunished who takes His name in vain. In verse 7 Paul said that Love bears all things and believes all things. God said to ONLY believe in Him and in truth and that God will NOT bear SIN! So my fellow Adventist members, choose this day on who to believe, God or the false apostle Paul! Please check out Ex. 20:5-6 where God said "I am a Jealous God, visiting the Iniquity of the fathers on the children, on the third and the fourth generations of those who HATE Me...and showing loveingkindness to thousands, to those who LOVE me AND KEEP [ALL] OF MY COMMANDMENTS." For those of you who think you love God and that God is 'love', this should be a wake up call. Either you love God by keeping ALL of His commandments and are then loved back by God, OR you thumb your nose at God and lie when you say that you love Him and that God loves you because you refuse to obey Him and keep ALL of His commandments.

ClubV12 Posted March 19, 2011 Posted March 19, 2011 I don't need to read every "good book" that comes along to make a precise call on whether it has value for me or not. A friend recently sent me a book, because I respect my friend I started to read it. It had some decent reviews as well. I couldn't get through the first chapter! I didn't read very far before I "jumped to the conclusion" the book was to negative, to controversial, to mean for me to even continue. I couldn't give you a review on it either way, because I didn't read it, didn't need to, won't. It's not a book I'll be recommending to anyone. As to the book in question on this thread, maybe I'll read the reviews, but am not likely to rush out and buy it. My reading assignments are pretty full already, currently reading Patriarchs and Prophets, having recently finished Great Controversy and the Desire of Ages. Now THOSE are some great books! I found "Sketches from the Life of Paul", by EGW, to be particularly interesting,,, by the way.
