So when I was warming up to play yesterday, I turned on the camera and tried to knock some of the rust off.

So... that will be Maria's accompaniment in church when she sings?

Isaiah 32:17 And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.

I don't think so. She hates rock and roll. I'm learning some hymns for her.

I have no idea if that is talent or noise. But will take Gail's word for it that it is talent.

Lol Woody...

If you don't think it's a talent, try to pick it up and make it sound half as good. This guy can play.

That's what my parents used to say, and it's what I say today about rap. I don't listen to Rock any more, not because I made a conscious decision, but simply because my tastes are different now than they were a few years ago. When I did listen to rock, my favorites were the Doors, Creedence Clearwater, the Beatles, the Stones, Jimi Hendrix, War, and Eric Burden and the Animals. But honestly I can-- or rather used to-- enjoy almost any kind of music except Rap. I used to really dig R & B, soul, country, and jazz. My favorites now, though, are Adventist Hymns and classical music. I noticed the other night when I turned on a channel with Oldies, I can still really get into Motown and groups like the Supremes, the Temptations, Chuck Berry and Ray Charles.

Well, the reason I'm pulling your ear through all this is that it's plain as day to me that Richard's got talent and could be playing with a rock band if he really wanted to. I don't know beans about playing music myself, except on the radio, that is-- but I sure do know a good guitar when I hear it, even when it hasn't been played regular for a long time.

John 3:16-17

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. [17] For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.

Yes, it is a PRS. 1991 Custom 24. But mostly what I own are Gibsons. Maybe I'll pm you a couple of pics.

Please do, though it may not help with the not-covetting. bwink

I have a PRS SE (the cheaper Korean-made ones, but still a very nice and playable guitar) and have owned (and, stupidly, sold) a Fender Jaguar and an Ibanez Iceman as well as a few other nondescript things.

I'd definitely love to own a Les Paul at some point: might have to wait until the kids are through uni, then I'll have to come to the States to buy one: they start at about $3000 here...

Thanks John, I used to do that years ago. But that life style is not conducive to living a spiritual life. Here's a pic of that same "Paul Reed Smith" guitar. I traded a 1970 Gibson Les Paul Custom and a thousand dollars for it.

I was wondering how the SE plays. Does it stay in tune when you use the wang bar? Does it have the locking tuning pegs?

Here's a pic of the Les Paul Custom I traded. Also my Gibson Nighthawk, and my gold top PRS, which was my first one. And my Gibson Les Paul Studio model on the other end.

The one I have doesn't have a whammy. I tend not to use it for what I play, plus I had enough bad experiences with really cheap and nasty guitars that went out of tune if you so much as looked at them that I kind of have a preference for a fixed bridge.

It's by far the nicest guitar I've played, though, with a low and very smooth action and good sustain.

Might have to post a small response video of my own: my chops were never at your level and are equally rusty, but we can still have some fun with it.

By all means. Does the SE stay in tune? And what kind of tuners did they put on it?

I'll second that. I know there's many great guitar players, and Richard would probably be amongst them if he'd kept with it instead of putting the Lord first in his life. I also loved listening to R&R, Jazz, etc. Still do but don't listen to it much if at all any more. Still love listening to Eric Clapton though.

The good Lord has room for talented guitarists such as you, Richard!

I think I am in the mood now to listen to a bit of Dream Theater with John Petrucci...

"Absurdity reigns and confusion makes it look good."

"Sinless perfection is such a shallow goal."

"I love God only as much as the person I love the least."

Here's a quick and very rough vid.

"> " type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350">

Explanations rather than excuses - I know some of the 'playing' is excruciating. The video is also mixed down from mp4, so quite pixelly, and then despite having bought lots quite recently I couldn't lay my hands on a pick, so it's all fingernail picked, which makes it less distinct.

First up is the PRS SE. It does stay in tune very well. The tuners don't lock but say PRS on them: if you can survive to the end (or fast forward) there's a grab of the back of the headstock.

Next is my Quest Atak 5. What can I say, a mate bought it in the 80s, borrowing half the money from me, and when he couldn't pay and lost interest in playing I repoed it. It's not a great guitar at all, little sustain, but it's a fun shape and does have a coil-tap... ;-)

FInally my Takamine acoustic: it's a $200 pawnshop acquisition with a badly marred surface but is actually a very nice guitar indeed to play.

I also own an old classical guitar and play it a bit but I discovered a string had broken when I went to grab it for this.

Anyway - endure!

Oh no, that's not my daughter. That was my girlfriend's daughter. I'd say she is in her mid to late 20s now.

Thanks Tom. John Petrucci eh? I like that style of playing.
