Mark Lowry Recovering Fundamentalist - Interesting

We are witnessing a remarkable migration of religion among us. From objective to subjective premise. This exactly parallels the postmodern concept of individualized auto-developed reality. Adventist self-identity once rested on adherence to external truths found in and accepted from the Word of God. The experiential element always has been there, but it was used to define my reaction, my surrender to a new birth, my response to the call of Christ. The submission of all my desires and plans and habits and perspectives and goals and hopes—before the majestic truth that Christ has revealed to me. That’s an objective relationship, friends. The transaction was objective. There was a subjective element which dealt with my method and my surrender, but not with the elements of truth. The spirit leads me to accept God’s ways, whether it is convenient or not.

Today’s Adventist church has moved measurably from the description I have just given you, prompting Elder Wilson to warn us about the Emerging church movement and other dangers. However the stress today is falling on a relationship that relies no longer on revealed truth as it does on inner emotional experience. Hence we have all this feel-good preaching that’s coming from our pulpits, friends (and outside pulpits). It’s an effort on the part of some pastors to meet the needs that they perceive. At its popular level relationship suggests the coming together of mere equal parties, in a format suggesting negotiated agreement of some kind. Almost missing from this formula is the sense of awe — what it means to come into the presence of the Master of the universe. Curiously, the word relationship is all but absent from the Biblical text.

An intimate walk between persons (us) and the Mighty Ruler of all is often presented, but always & only on the basis of overflowing grace. Never on the basis of cozy intimacy between equals.

At first I thought I liked this post; but now I am not sure. What exactly did this poor recovering fundy say that was not Biblical? What doctrinal error did he espouse? Although his sermon was a little heavy on the entertainment end of things; atleast he wouldn't have to worry about anyone in the audience falling asleep on him.

Indeed. The problem with this broad brush EC criticism is that its long on tortuous explanations of the dangers of this or that modern movement but short on simple, direct Biblical critique. The dangers and implied, suggested, inferred, and hinted at but I've yet to see it presented clearly and simply using scripture set against quotes from the leading lights in the EC movement.

Not trying to be overtly critical just reporting my observation.

Great spirits have always found violent opposition from mediocrities. The latter cannot understand it when a man does not thoughtlessly submit to hereditary prejudices but honestly and courageously uses his intelligence.

Hey Overaged-- that's gotta be a dentist's (or dental hygenist's) dream, I bet. Looks like he can open it wide, wide open. Now if only we can get that huge obstruction out of the way!

John 3:16-17

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. [17] For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.

LOL, yes. Lots of Adventist dentists would eat good from that cow.

Especially when we consider what God said about people in the last days "known" for gathering to themselves those who strive for little more than tickling the ears.

"But he who had received one went and dug in the ground, and hid his lord’s money. After a long time the lord of those servants came and settled accounts with them....

“Then he who had received the one talent came and said, ‘Lord, I knew you to be a hard man, reaping where you have not sown, and gathering where you have not scattered seed. And I was afraid, and went and hid your talent in the ground. Look, there you have what is yours.’

“But his lord answered and said to him, ‘You wicked and lazy servant, you knew that I reap where I have not sown, and gather where I have not scattered seed. So you ought to have deposited my money with the bankers, and at my coming I would have received back my own with interest. So take the talent from him, and give it to him who has ten talents.

‘For to everyone who has, more will be given, and he will have abundance; but from him who does not have, even what he has will be taken away. And cast the unprofitable servant into the outer darkness. There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.”

I say to you, inasmuch as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to Me.’ And these will go away into everlasting punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.”"

Quote from Mark Mowry (episode 158) "The only thing you can know for sure is your experience."

Wait a minute. Experience can be deceptive, can't it? Dare we determine ultimate truth by our experiences?

Nothing's wrong if it's biblical. But when we say that the only thing we can know for sure is our experience, it can lead people to conclude that we can't know anything for sure unless we've experienced it. Of course that kind of thinking can get people into a lot of trouble.

The Bible is true whether we believe it or not.

But you are exactly right that our experiences are not always deceptive. Yet we need to always test them by the Bible.

Have you noticed that people today are taught to trust their experience and doubt the Bible if there's any conflict between the two? We're being taught that if science doesn't verify the Bible, then we should of course accept the testimony of science and reject the Bible.

Bob made a very good point.

I thought some of the humour in the video was inappropriate, especially when Christ was used as the centre of the humour...

We should filter everything through the word and not let sentiment cloud our judgement.

Especially to think that God might have any humor in Himself. But then He did make the dodo bird. And you never know where one of those is going to show up.

But there are other times when I hear something in jest and I groan inwardly cause it grates on me. And the reason is that I feel that it's sacreligious.

It would be hard for me to distinguish if someone's laughing WITH Jesus or AT Jesus. But as far as I go, I do have a limit. I just hope it's close to where God's limit is!

You'll have to excuse me but I was in nursing for 14 years, and all I can say is too much juicing: you'd better stick close to the wash room, if you are not used to it.

One one level these comments actually agree with the complaints of the speaker on Tom's own selected video.

So now Tom chooses to defend the practice of dodging the questions. The very practice being condemned in his own chosen/selected video for this thread.

Yep, an adventure in missing the point played out in quite similar fashion to the movie, Ground Hog Day....

"Absurdity reigns and confusion makes it look good."

"Sinless perfection is such a shallow goal."

"I love God only as much as the person I love the least."

*Forgiveness is always good news. And that is the gospel truth.

(And finally, the ideas expressed above are solely my person views and not that of any organization with which I am associated.)

I'm a little daft on acronyms....OP=?

As for "accomplish"ing, let me put forth some observations...

...definately looking at all the serious mountains from mole hills arguements

....unfortunately, people are slinging this stuff around like annoyed monkeys do with dung at the zoo.... This is NOT a good thing...

a bit of humor never hurt anyone.....especially some self-depreciating humor...Too many proud people around here me thinks...

Just my observations from many days of observing....
