I did say, "during a test."

Everything you do is based on the choices you make. It's not your parents, your past relationships, your job, the economy, the weather, an argument, or your age that is to blame. You and only you are responsible for every decision and choice you make, period ... ... Wish more people would realize this.

One last comment, then I am done with this thread.

What may seem devious and sneaky to some, may seem ingenious and imaginative to others.

In the classroom how the teacher perceives it is what counts. Not how children see it

¡Exactamente!

Oh my goodness! I just read what I wrote and there was a ton of typos. One might think my Spanish is really bad reading that. :-( Shane on me for not proof-reading it.

So how can we reach each other's heart in a polyglot USA?

We have a neighbor that is from Mexico. When he moved here he spoke very little english. No one in the neighborhood speaks spanish. This has not stopped anyone from being friendly and a good neighbor to this family without learning to speak spanish.

He went out of his way to interact with the neighbors so that he could learn english faster. His wife spoke better english and he insisted she speak english to him as he had a living to earn and did not want to be hampered by language. For some reason he did not expect all clients he came in contact with to learn spanish instead

When a person learns a new language an entire new world opens to them. Learning Spanish was my greatest accomplishment that has given me more blessings than I can count. There are hymns that I can enjoy and have actually brought me to tears that before I could not have understood. There are TV channels I can watch with preachers I would have never even heard of before. The examples are nearly endless. An additional language means more music, books, friends, churches, cultures, festivals and such that one could have never known. Multi-languages is something to be encouraged and embraced and never discouraged or feared.

From page one:

"Hispanic students in her school that they would no longer be allowed to speak Spanish while in class." It's OK to speak Hungarian if you like out of class, in the hall or around the corner.

Spanish accent, Boston accent, Southern accent, accents aren't the problem. I bet this Principle is seeing the same problem I saw in Hawaii. An "accent" so "thick" communication is difficult to impossible for to many. In such a case even getting a job at McD's will be difficult.

scott t. comments like yours are WHY Americans can't have this conversation with those who don't speak english. As soon as you bring it up, they get all snooty and defensive and start going on about the arrogant Americans. Their "spanish" rights, their African American rights, their Filipino rights, to talk just the way they want.

Well fine, enjoy that ditch digging job, flip those burgers, stay in that ghetto. For many, that is exactly what will and has happened to the "young people" scott thinks will save the planet.

That Principle should be promoted for trying to HELP those kids, but it's an uphill battle with politically correctness run wild. Common sense,,, aint so common.

I do not know how much time you spend with people that do not speak much English and their families. I work with them daily, in fact with this cold weather , I dug a few ditches with them this week to repair water lines( some how me knowing fairly good English didn't save me from digging). Middle school kids speaking Spanish to each other while in class would seem helpful. If you have spent much time with non-english speaking people, there is usually those who understand more, and usually, in their native language, help others understand what is being said. Imagine not knowing English well enough to understand a teacher explaining meiosis vs. Mitosis.

Maybe a school district with 50% Spanish speaking students should hire bilingual teachers, showing a little common sense. :)

So how can we reach each other's heart in a polyglot USA?

I don't know about that. My wife bought several tapes and CDs of Jose Ocampo when we first got married. Jose Ocampo is a very big name in Spanish-speaking Adventist circles. Jose Ocampo was a secular artist that was quite accomplished. Then he became converted and baptized as a Seventh-day Adventist. He left his secular music behind and became in high demand for evangelistic crusades. I had heard his songs scores of times but never paid close attention. Then one day when driving between projects I listened to one of his hymn about Jesus searching out the the one lost lamb and leaving the 99 behind. Tears came to my eyes as he started to sing that he was that lamb trembling and hopeless, afraid and desperate. I think the fact that it took such effort for me to listen in order to understand made the message all that more powerful.

Now if you don't know who Jose Ocampo is, that is a fine example of a world that is hidden to you. A world you are not part of. http://joseocampo.com

Maybe the ones in school should learn the English language, showing courtesy, common sense and thankfulness for even being here. You saying that it would be better to hire bilingual teachers shows just exactly what and how the immigrants see this country as being stupid enough to put up with such things. Go to Mexico and try all of your suggestions. It wouldn't happen there and it shouldn't here. The problem with this country is that we don't even follow the laws on the books and we need to get back to the immigration laws the way they were used to before 1964.

I see. Those laws excluded Latin Americans, Asians and Africans and preferred northern and western Europeans over southern and eastern ones.

Great spirits have always found violent opposition from mediocrities. The latter cannot understand it when a man does not thoughtlessly submit to hereditary prejudices but honestly and courageously uses his intelligence.

Studies show that kids who are bilingual do better on thier studies overall....they get better jobs [if they become legal],

I am aware that Korea and Japan both teach thier children English. And they test better on math, reading, science tests than the US kids....

As has been said before in other places, the brain is an organ that performs better when exercised....

No one is against being bilingual.I don't think Japan and Korea score higher because they teach english. The brain can be exercised in many ways, being bilingual is hardly the only way.

When my granddaughter attended college in Spain for a year.

They didn't give a hoot about exercising the brain apparently.

Spanish only on campus,no bi lingual roommate.

My DIL is from Russia and it wasn't learning english that caused her to excel. It is they don't tolerate nonsense and a lot of focus on non-academic.They are there to learn and they are not asked pretty please and BTW,if you don't pass your exams we will pass you anyway because we know it is to hard.

I wonder if I would be considered arrogant if I went to Mexico or Russia voluntarily and then gave them a list of my demands and expectations of them.Provide my food, medical, housing, allow my wishes to dominate the classroom,a employer must meet my demands of speaking my language in addition to his own. Wonder how that would go?

TIC or not, nothing remotely close to what you are saying has been said or even implied.

No one said anything about "more immigrants. No one said english or the highway.

Remember, before you start to travel that highway, one that if you know english is certainly a easier journey,or if in Mexico knowing spanish makes it much easier. That way so many wouldn't be a burden on others. No one suggested they forget their own language. When you are making implications or accusations, have you considered factual truth, whatever language?

OK, you simply DON'T know anything about that law back then. What you said is a misunderstanding of yours or a lie. It was based on percentages and anyway, exactly what is wrong with preferring immigrants from certain areas and/or countries? After all, every other country shows preferential treatment for certain immigrants over others. I mean, it is liberals who keep telling all of us that we, as a country, should be more like other countries when we don't do or act the like you think we should.

Requiring students to speak english in the classroom with a english speaking teacher is not forbidding them to speak their language or to forget about it?

I never said that they shouldn't be bilingual. You really do go overboard with reading into something that has not been posted. I am not even going to waste more time with your post above because it is a ridiculous assumption of yours and a downright dream that because some of us are against said law that now that means we are against children being bilingual. It is no different than the idiocy that is constantly paraded about because of some saying that they are against adding to the deficit of the country means that they are against children and people on social security. It is the same old...same old with libs anymore.
