Um, the teachers do that already...So, what is your beef?

My beef, your continual exaggerations. Speaking english in a english speaking classroom does not forbid them to speak another language in the hallways, lunchroom, playground at home or in their churches.

Regardless, when they enter the workforce it is far more difficult for them if they are not reasonably fluent in english.

Consumers frequenting a business are not going to learn the different languages of employee's.They shouldn't be expected to.

No more than I should expect what you are suggesting if I voluntarily move to another country.

gahLOL @ Neil!

I thought you said you weren't gonna take any more time with me....but you posted this...so you're taking more time with me...

Obviously, I've made a point with you, [i am sure you will deny it because you don't want to be vulnerable. Ok then...].

The problem is yours, OzarkWoman. You've had other people tell you this before me..."Prickly", they said....

We don't mind the opposing view points...people will disagree with you....but what we do mind is the attitude that is on display for all to see...become less "prickly"....Change your posting style or your attitude.....or you will run into this problem again...

I don't recall saying in this thread that you need to move to another country....If I did, I appologize...but I do want to see where I suggested that you move to another country in this thread.....

Care to cough it up?

I am Mexican American and I don't really see an issue with the ban. Frankly, I think it is a good move in that takes the best interest of the students. The last time I checked, English is the official language in the U.S. for conducting commerace.

Neil, why don't you knock it off? Not at anytime did I say you suggested I move to another country.

If you believe I am within my rights and should expect another country to bend to my demands if I move there, just say so.

Notice that does not say that you suggested I move.

So why not quit trying to make this so personal?

I have not said or suggested that those that disagree with me are less christian than I,but that seems to always come across from a few.

Not necessary. I did not make this personal nor did I pass judgement on you.

A few here have made the opinions of others racist or unchristian.

I didn't make those remarks about anyone

Why the inflammatory comments here, Bonnie? My general impression is that you have mis-read my post...You need to read it again and see what I have said that has offended you in that post? I explained alot in that post, and didn't say [at least, I thought I didnt] that would offend...I even apologized for POSSIBLY making the statement that you move to another country even though I didn't make it. You, on the other hand, didn't communicate well...so what the big deal? you attempted to explain, and clarified...and I answered your question....

So, the above is tonally bad...I want to use words like vile, putrid, "shame on you" to let you know how disgusted I am in your return behavior. How can you act this way? You claim to be innocent of all bad behavior, but won't even try to reach out....

After all my effort to clarify this dispute, why should I waste my time trying to be peaceful with you?

Yes Neil very obvious in your attempt to be peaceful.Your innocence is commendable

Anything that does not seem to agree with you is considered inflammatory.

I have yet to post something like this......I want to use words like vile, putrid, "shame on you" to let you know how disgusted I am in your return behavior. How can you act this way? You claim to be innocent of all bad behavior,

One thing I am sure of is that I will never be called to account to you in "that day" I do think however I have read where making false accusations and judgments will be called to account by a higher power, one that really counts. Comments like the following even tho claimed to be TIC is meant to convey an opinion or judgment on those that simply disagree with a few of you.

We are the youngest Immigrant nation, a large country and need to provide eduction for own, so lets not encumber that prosses with more immigrants! Its English or the Highway! Think of it this way, if they don't know English, they can't take our jobs.....wait a minute....that won't work, us americans ain't going to work for those kind of wages! Well, they just need to forget about their own language and do it our way, we are superior in every way as it is. So There!!

(TIC....well sort of...)

giggle

There are a couple of others that are judgmental, offered by the non judgmental crowd. While this was not your statements,I believe you concurred.

I do get a little chuckle out of the way "personal attacks" are perceived on this forum.

I guess but it only seems to be a personal attack when the poster of said attack is posting disagreement about something. Nobody ever says a thing about the snide and sarcastic remarks that are made to me and about me, but I don't make a deal because I am a big girl.

When a person learns a new language an entire new world opens to them. Learning Spanish was my greatest accomplishment that has given me more blessings than I can count. There are hymns that I can enjoy and have actually brought me to tears that before I could not have understood. There are TV channels I can watch with preachers I would have never even heard of before. The examples are nearly endless. An additional language means more music, books, friends, churches, cultures, festivals and such that one could have never known. Multi-languages is something to be encouraged and embraced and never discouraged or feared.

There are over 1.5 million immigrants to the USA every year, probably representing over 1,000 languages. Which is more logical and practical, for Americans to learn a thousand languages or the 1.5 millions to learn one language?

Thank you! If I had not learned the language, I'd probably be cutting sugarcane or picking pineapple in Hawaii like my father & uncle, or cutting asparagus in California like many of my relatives did.

The more languages an individual learns, the bigger their world becomes. Logically it we makes more sense to learn the languages most commonly spoken in the area one lives. Here in the US that would mean Spanish and French although there are parts of the country with heavy populations that would make learning Portuguese, Japanese, Korean or Mandarin very beneficial.

All that may be beneficial is not necessarily practical. It is unrealistic to expect teachers to be able to accommodate every language they may encounter in the classroom.

While there are businesses that do require bilingual employee's,most do not.

My grandchildren go to our schools. They are costly enough without having to add teachers that speak various languages.

No one that I know of wish's to see children from other countries forget their heritage or how to speak their language. Children learn quickly and the more they use english in school with their peers, the better prepared they are to succeed. This isn't a either or.

We had several german immigrant families in our small church school. One of our members sponsored families and gave them a start in the US.When they arrived they did not speak english and obviously we did not speak german. Their progress in english and academically the first year was outstanding. They did not speak german in school. They did not forget their heritage or their language. Those that feel strongly about learning another language are free to do so without demanding everyone do what they consider beneficial.

We have family members in our family that immigrated here. They

realize they are in the US,not just an extension of their homeland. There are many interesting things to learn of their culture, that does not mean in doing so,we all learn their language. They are more interested in learning english as that is where they live now and that is most beneficial to them

Is there something wrong with that? Where are you going to to get your asparagus if no one cuts it?

I don't argue that learning English is beneficial and necessary. I still don't see the benefit of banning students speaking spanish in a biology class. English class and the teacher requires only english, understandable.

Spanish speaking students speaking spanish in an biology course, other than my red ,white and blue pride being offended, I don't see a problem.

Sure. We should just post a sign at every US border station saying something like "God wants you to speak English if you cross that line!" (with a big red arrow pointing to the paint mark on the ground).

Ok, I should not be facetious. Thankfully, God is not a God who uses compelling force in His government. He invented variety, and is a lover of it.

When I learned about "Lady Liberty" in school, there was never any specification as to what languages were allowed entrance.

Discrimination and prejudice more often follow linguistic lines than color lines, in my experience, and this thread is no exception.
