No, this is the US and despite the stats of that school district

business etc is primarily english.

A 50% Hispanic district is still in the US.School is where most of these children will learn the skills to allow them to be productive and self supporting,or it used to be.

Yes this is the US, I was unaware that speaking Spanish was illegal.

Just because the school district disagreed with principal on the ban, doesn't mean they will no longer teach English. She thought the best way to teach English was the ban, her employer thought differently.

As would I if I were that employer or a teacher in that school.

When I was learning another language in another country, I discovered when I had reached a certain stage in my language development that it was especially helpful for me to use strictly the local language for a period of time (say, one whole day), and then, at the end of this time, give it a rest (for say, three days--speaking only my mother tongue to allow my mind to recuperate from the mental exercise). After the rest period, my language skills had significantly improved.

I traveled away from that country for over a month. Everyone said I should practice the language while away, lest I forget it. I didn't. Everyone was surprised, even my teachers, when I returned, and they admitted that my language skills had improved over the break. The mind does well with alternating periods of work and of rest.

The mind is like a muscle. Work it just a little (learn five words a day), and it needs no rest. Give it a real workout, and you better rest for a few days afterward. Body builders will work on one muscle group one day, then rest that muscle group for two or three days before working it hard again. The mind is the same. People who are thrown into a new language cannot automatically have infinite brain power in learning it without a rest any more than a body builder can just keep lifting weights all day every day and watch his muscles swell.

When I got to the end of my day speaking only the "foreign language," my mind was like mush and I knew my sentences were no longer grammatically correct. I had to rest. Unfortunately, those who haven't any experience learning another language are often among the most forward in telling others how to do it.

I'm curious what year your granddaughter studied at Sagunto. Perhaps I met her there.

My Spanish was never harmed by speaking English. Now...learning Chinese was something else. I found that it suddenly made life difficult when trying to communicate in one of my other acquired languages. Again, English never hurt my Chinese...but Chinese kept popping into my head when I would try to speak Spanish!

I would have to check on the year and the name of the college.It hasn't been that many years ago.

She also went to China to learn Chinese as her focus was International Business.

For some reason this seems to be viewed as a punishment,rather than crucial help in succeeding in another country with different culture and language.This isn't racism or feeling superior.

Having gone to school with those that could not speak english and working with many that were not very fluent in english,it soon became apparent that it was not just knowing the words.

I worked with a woman from Guatemala and it was really difficult for her.Not always the correct words but the way "those crazy americans" used them.

In the spring of the year some of us invited her to go garage saling with us. Having a family to help care for and money being tight we thought she could benefit. She kept saying no,she didn't want anything like that. We finally understood what her objection was when she asked "why so many people wanted to sell their garages,what would they do when cold weather came again"

All of us had a good laugh with her when we finally understood.

Those that did not have a good grasp of english were told to excuse themselves and get someone who did for the customers.

The contractors would come in at 5:00 A.M and did not want to take the chance on a wrong order for supplies or waste time trying to explain to someone what they wanted.

Those wishing to do better financially worked really hard at speaking only english on the job. Those that didn't stayed right where they started

Who cares about language anymore. I mean, so many in this country are so propagandized that one can't get it through their thick skulls about right and wrong, much less ore involved stuff.

Jesus is coming very soon people and this is the least of anyone's worries. I suggest it will be less than a decade when he arrives. Probably should worry about getting your own house in order.
