Penicillin Killer Bees Microwave Oven Slinky Answer: The Africanized bee is a hybrid species of the Western honey bee. These so-called “killer” bees were accidentally introduced into the wild by Brazilian scientists in 1956. The scientists were attempting to create a new hybrid bee in the hopes of improving honey production, when 26 swarms escaped quarantine and began to dominate the native honey bee. Africanized honey bees have been known to chase people for more than a quarter of a mile once they get excited and aggressive. They have killed some 1,000 humans, with victims receiving ten times more stings than the average honey bee. The English version, “The Lion Sleeps Tonight”, also known as “Wimoweh” has been recorded by more than 150 artists and appears in more than 15 feature films. The song topped the Billboard pop chart on this day in 1961, and became an instant classic for the doo-wop group The Tokens. Sutcliffe left the band to pursue his career as a painter, having previously attended the Liverpool College of Art. Sutcliffe and John Lennon are credited with inventing the name "Beetles", as they both liked Buddy Holly's band, the Crickets. The band used this name for a while until Lennon decided to change the name to "The Beatles". As a member of the group when it was a five-piece band, Sutcliffe is one of several people sometimes referred to as the "Fifth Beatle." Answer: Clifford the Big Red Dog was an educational animated children's television series, based upon Norman Bridwell's children's book series of the same name. So who was the voice of the adorable Big Red Dog? You probably know him best from his starring role on Three's Company. John Ritter was the voice of Clifford in all 65 episodes of the television series. The late actor brought the iconic children's book character to life in this PBS Kids adaptation right up until his untimely passing in 2003. Ritter received several Emmy nominations for his voice work on the show. Quote phkrause When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; But when a wicked man rules, the people groan. His official reply was brief and succinct: “NUTS!” The men of the 101st Airborne successfully defended their position for four days until reinforcements arrived. For his gallantry, General McAuliffe was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross by General Patton. Members phkrause Posted December 23, 2018 Author Members Posted December 23, 2018 13 hours ago, phkrause said: Who Was Named Commander Of the Continental Navy? To lead the newly created American naval force, the Continental Congress named Esek Hopkins commander in chief of the Continental Navy. Hopkins, a longtime captain of merchant marine vessels, had sailed ships to virtually every corner of the globe. Admiral Hopkins had a good reputation in his home state of Rhode Island. He had been a privateer during the French and Indian War, making a great deal of money and proving his skill. At the start of the American Revolution, he had served as a brigadier general of its ground troops. Besides his reputation, it didn’t hurt that his brother, Stephen Hopkins, chaired the naval committee under the Continental Congress. 13 hours ago, phkrause said: What Flag Was Especially Designed for Hopkins Colonel Christopher Gadsden from South Carolina designed what became known as the Gadsden flag as the personal standard for Esek Hopkins. It had a yellow background and was emblazoned with a coiled rattlesnake. Underneath the snake, it said, “Don’t Tread on Me!” By 1775, the symbol of the Gadsden flag was represented everywhere, not just on flags. It appeared on banners, on paper money and on buttons for the soldiers’ uniforms. Drums carried by the Marines were also emblazoned with the rattlesnake. 13 hours ago, phkrause said: What Was the Primary Mission of the Continental Navy? In the early years of the Continental Navy, almost all the ships of its fleet were converted merchant vessels, not really designed for warfare and ill-suited to the tasks at hand. As the American Revolution dragged on, specially designed warships were built to face off against the formidable British naval forces. In the wake of the Continental Congress's commissioning of the navy's first officers, the primary task was to do everything possible to disrupt British ocean borne commerce and to intercept, if possible, shipments of materiel being sent to supply British fighting forces. 13 hours ago, phkrause said: What Were the Names of the Continental Navy’s First Ships? The two frigates armed with 24 guns were named the Alfred and the Columbus. The Alfred was a three-masted merchant ship that weighed 450 tons. It had previously been named the Black Prince after Edward of Woodstock, King Edward III’s eldest son. She was captured by the British in 1778, refitted and placed into service by them. The Columbus was the other 24-gun frigate used by the new Continental Navy. It had been built in Philadelphia in 1774 and was originally called the Sally. The Columbus was pursued and forced to ground by the British in 1778 at Rhode Island. She was subsequently burned by the British. Two brigs equipped with 14 guns each were the Andrew Doria and the Cabot. The Andrew Doria was ordered burned by her commanding officer off the coast of New Jersey to avoid capture by the British in 1777. The Cabot was captured by British troops in 1777 after being forced ashore. Three schooners, the Hornet, the Fly and the Wasp, were also used by the Continental Navy in its early days. Julie and David met at the Republican National Convention in 1956 while his grandfather was campaigning for re-election. They were both eight at the time. Pablo Picasso Leonardo da Vinci Vincent van Gogh Andy Warhol Answer: On this day in 1888, Dutch painter Vincent van Gogh, suffering from severe depression, cut off the lower part of his left ear with a razor. He later documented the event in a painting titled Self-Portrait with Bandaged Ear. The precise chain of events that led to the incident of slicing off his ear is not known reliably in detail. He allegedly wrapped up the ear and gave it to a prostitute at a nearby brothel before returning home and collapsing. He was found unconscious the next day by the police and taken to hospital. Vincent van Gogh died aged 37 from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Quote phkrause When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; But when a wicked man rules, the people groan. Proverbs 29;2
