Happy Sabbath

All Things Bright and Beautiful

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Refrain

All things bright and beautiful,

All creatures great and small,

All things wise and wonderful:

The Lord God made them all.

Each little flower that opens,

Each little bird that sings,

He made their glowing colors,

He made their tiny wings.

Refrain

[Most hymnals omit the following verse]

The rich man in his castle,

The poor man at his gate,

He made them, high or lowly,

And ordered their estate.

Refrain

The purple headed mountains,

The river running by,

The sunset and the morning

That brightens up the sky.

Refrain

The cold wind in the winter,

The pleasant summer sun,

The ripe fruits in the garden,

He made them every one.

Refrain

The tall trees in the greenwood,

The meadows where we play,

The rushes by the water,

To gather every day.

Refrain

He gave us eyes to see them,

And lips that we might tell

How great is God Almighty,

Who has made all things well.

Refrain

Happy End of Sabbath

Day is Dying in the West

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Day is dying in the west;

Heav’n is touching earth with rest;

Wait and worship while the night

Sets the evening lamps alight

Through all the sky.

Refrain

Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of Hosts!

Heav’n and earth are full of Thee!

Heav’n and earth are praising Thee,

O Lord most high!

Lord of life, beneath the dome

Of the universe, Thy home,

Gather us who seek Thy face

To the fold of Thy embrace,

For Thou art nigh.

Refrain

While the deepening shadows fall,

Heart of love enfolding all,

Through the glory and the grace

Of the stars that veil Thy face,

Our hearts ascend.

Refrain

When forever from our sight

Pass the stars, the day, the night,

Lord of angels, on our eyes

Let eternal morning rise

And shadows end.

Refrain

May we be one so that the world may be won.

When I was a kid I hated that song. We used to have to sing it for worship every Friday night. I much preferred "Now the day is over"...which we seldom sang.....

Interesting comment, Gladussee.

Both those hymns were "Sabbath sundown" hymns for our family, too, when I was growing up.

Did you have somebody playing an instrument while you sang? Or were you singing a cappella? with perhaps some family members harmonizing with the tenor part, or the alto part?

For harmonizing, I would prefer "Now the Day is Over" because of its lovely tenor part.

Go to Dark Gethsemane

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Go to dark Gethsemane, ye that feel the tempter’s power;

Your Redeemer’s conflict see, watch with Him one bitter hour,

Turn not from His griefs away; learn of Jesus Christ to pray.

See Him at the judgment hall, beaten, bound, reviled, arraigned;

O the wormwood and the gall! O the pangs His soul sustained!

Shun not suffering, shame, or loss; learn of Christ to bear the cross.

Calvary’s mournful mountain climb; there, adoring at His feet,

Mark that miracle of time, God’s own sacrifice complete.

“It is finished!” hear Him cry; learn of Jesus Christ to die.

Early hasten to the tomb where they laid His breathless clay;

All is solitude and gloom. Who has taken Him away?

Christ is risen! He meets our eyes; Savior, teach us so to rise.

May we be one so that the world may be won.

LOVE LIFTED ME

I was sinking deep in sin, far from the peaceful shore,

Very deeply stained within, sinking to rise no more,

But the Master of the sea, heard my despairing cry,

From the waters lifted me, now safe am I.

Refrain

Love lifted me! Love lifted me!

When nothing else could help

Love lifted me!

All my heart to Him I give, ever to Him I’ll cling

In His blessèd presence live, ever His praises sing,

Love so mighty and so true, merits my soul’s best songs,

Faithful, loving service too, to Him belongs.

Refrain

Souls in danger look above, Jesus completely saves,

He will lift you by His love, out of the angry waves.

He’s the Master of the sea, billows His will obey,

He your Savior wants to be, be saved today.

Refrain

May we be one so that the world may be won.

All progress in the Spiritual Life is knowing and Loving GOD

"there is non upon earth that I desire besides YOU" PS 73:25

That perspective changes EVERYTHING-suffering and adversity are the means that makes us hungry for GOD. Disapointments will wean us away wordly occupations. Even sin(when repented of) becomes a mechanism to push us closer to HIM as we experience His Love and Forgiveness.

Majesty

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Majesty, worship his majesty;

Unto Jesus be all glory, honor, and praise.

Majesty, kingdom authority,

Flow from his throne unto his own, his anthem raise.

So exalt, lift up on high the name of Jesus.

Magnify, come glorify Christ Jesus, the King.

Majesty, worship his majesty,

Jesus who died, now glorified, King of all kings.

May we be one so that the world may be won.

Great Is Thy Faithfulness

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Great is Thy faithfulness, O God my Father;

There is no shadow of turning with Thee;

Thou changest not, Thy compassions, they fail not;

As Thou hast been, Thou forever will be.

Refrain

Great is Thy faithfulness!

Great is Thy faithfulness!

Morning by morning new mercies I see.

All I have needed Thy hand hath provided;

Great is Thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me!

Summer and winter and springtime and harvest,

Sun, moon and stars in their courses above

Join with all nature in manifold witness

To Thy great faithfulness, mercy and love.

Refrain

Pardon for sin and a peace that endureth

Thine own dear presence to cheer and to guide;

Strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow,

Blessings all mine, with ten thousand beside!

Refrain

May we be one so that the world may be won.

I love the tune to this one. And also the words ...

Day by Day

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Day by day, and with each passing moment,

Strength I find, to meet my trials here;

Trusting in my Father’s wise bestowment,

I’ve no cause for worry or for fear.

He Whose heart is kind beyond all measure

Gives unto each day what He deems best—

Lovingly, its part of pain and pleasure,

Mingling toil with peace and rest.

Every day, the Lord Himself is near me

With a special mercy for each hour;

All my cares He fain would bear, and cheer me,

He Whose Name is Counselor and Power;

The protection of His child and treasure

Is a charge that on Himself He laid;

“As thy days, thy strength shall be in measure,”

This the pledge to me He made.

Help me then in every tribulation

So to trust Thy promises, O Lord,

That I lose not faith’s sweet consolation

Offered me within Thy holy Word.

Help me, Lord, when toil and trouble meeting,

Ever to take, as from a father’s hand,

One by one, the days, the moments fleeting,

Till I reach the promised land.

May we be one so that the world may be won.

This is a Great One ...

Until Then

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My heart can sing when I pause to remember

A heartache here is but a stepping stone

Along a trail that's winding always upward,

This troubled world is not my final home.

Chorus

But until then my heart will go on singing,

Until then with joy I'll carry on,

Until the day my eyes behold the city,

Until the day God calls me home.

The things of earth will dim and lose their value

If we recall they're borrowed for awhile;

And things of earth that cause the heart to tremble,

Remembered there will only bring a smile.

Chorus

But until then my heart will go on singing,

Until then with joy I'll carry on,

Until the day my eyes behold the city,

Until the day God calls me home.

This weary world with all its toil and struggle

May take its toll of misery and strife;

The soul of man is like a waiting falcon;

When it's released, it's destined for the skies.

Chorus

But until then my heart will go on singing,

Until then with joy I'll carry on,

Until the day my eyes behold the city,

Until the day God calls me home.

May we be one so that the world may be won.

I grew up enjoying this one . I remember a famous singer with a deep rich voice singing it.

I'd Rather Have Jesus--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I’d rather have Jesus than silver or gold;

I’d rather be His than have riches untold;

I’d rather have Jesus than houses or lands;

I’d rather be led by His nail-pierced hand

Refrain:

Than to be the king of a vast domain,

Or be held in sin’s dread sway;

I’d rather have Jesus than anything

This world affords today.

I’d rather have Jesus than men’s applause;

I’d rather be faithful to His dear cause;

I’d rather have Jesus than worldwide fame;

I’d rather be true to His holy name

He’s fairer than lilies of rarest bloom;

He’s sweeter than honey from out the comb;

He’s all that my hungering spirit needs;

I’d rather have Jesus and let Him lead

Thanks, Redwood, I know and love all the old tunes you posted!!!! My, my, my, those were the days...

Here's another one that we used to sing in days gone by:

Will There Be Many Stars?

I am thinking today of that beautiful land

I shall reach when the sun goeth down;

When thro' wonderful grace by my Savior I stand,

Will there be many stars in my crown?

In the strength of the Lord let me labor and pray,

Let me watch as a winner of souls;

That bright stars may be mine in the glorious day,

When His praise like the sea billow rolls.

Oh, what joy it will be when His face I behold,

Living gems at His feet to lay down;

It would sweeten my bliss in the city of gold,

Should there be many stars in my crown.

Chorus

Will there be many stars, many stars in my crown

When at evening the sun goeth down?

When I wake with the blest

In the mansions of rest,

Will there be many stars in my crown?

Love it!!

Was that famous singer named George Beverly Shea, by any chance?

I remember hearing him sing, too. Wasn't it on Billy Graham's programs?

Good memories. Good lyrics and melodies.

Yes, you are right Jeannie. His voice will forever be in my memory. What a man. And yes, I think he was on Billy Graham's programs. But, my parents had a record of him singing. And they played it over and over. With good reason.

And thanks for joining this thread.

Thanks Suzanne. I can hear this old tune running in my mind. And thanks for dropping by. Hope you will add more songs when they come to your mind. I think this is a good thing to do. The new songs are fine but we can be blessed by recalling some old ones with old memories of how the Lord has blessed.

One more good oldie ....

There's a Wideness in God's Mercy

---------------------------------------------------------------

There’s a wideness in God’s mercy,

Like the wideness of the sea;

There’s a kindness in His justice,

Which is more than liberty.

There is no place where earth’s sorrows

Are more felt than up in heaven;

There is no place where earth’s failings

Have such kindly judgment given.

There is welcome for the sinner,

And more graces for the good;

There is mercy with the Savior;

There is healing in His blood.

There is grace enough for thousands

Of new worlds as great as this;

There is room for fresh creations

In that upper home of bliss.

For the love of God is broader

Than the measure of our mind;

And the heart of the Eternal

Is most wonderfully kind.

There is plentiful redemption

In the blood that has been shed;

There is joy for all the members

In the sorrows of the Head.

’Tis not all we owe to Jesus;

It is something more than all;

Greater good because of evil,

Larger mercy through the fall.

If our love were but more simple,

We should take Him at His word;

And our lives would be all sunshine

In the sweetness of our Lord.

Souls of men! why will ye scatter

Like a crowd of frightened sheep?

Foolish hearts! why will ye wander

From a love so true and deep?

It is God: His love looks mighty,

But is mightier than it seems;

’Tis our Father: and His fondness

Goes far out beyond our dreams.

But we make His love too narrow

By false limits of our own;

And we magnify His strictness

With a zeal He will not own.

Was there ever kinder shepherd

Half so gentle, half so sweet,

As the Savior who would have us

Come and gather at His feet?

May we be one so that the world may be won.

He Has made me Glad

-------------------

I will enter His gates with thanksgiving in my heart

I will enter His courts with praise

I will say this is the day that the Lord has made

I will rejoice for He has made me glad

He has made me glad (2X)

I will rejoice for He has made me glad, glad, glad

He has made me glad (2X)

I will rejoice for He has made me glad

How true this song is ...

Quote:
People need the Lord

----------------------------

Everyday they pass me by, I can see it in their eyes.

Empty people filled with care, headed who knows where.

On they go through private pain, living fear to fear,

Laughter hides their silent cries, only Jesus hears.

People need the Lord, people need the Lord.

At the end of broken dreams, He's the open door.

People need the Lord, people need the Lord.

When will we realize...people need the Lord?

We are called to take His light to a world where wrong seems right.

What would be too great a cost for sharing life with one who's lost.

Thorough His love our hearts can feel all the grief they bear.

They must hear the words of life only we can share.

That we must give our lives for

People need the Lord, people need the Lord.

May we be one so that the world may be won.

This is the key ...

We must be broken in order to be filled. We must have OUR dreams broken and then we can open the door. Then HE can give us a dream. He will fill our lives much better than we ever could have imagined.

"Tell It To Jesus"

Edmund S. Lorenz wrote the words and music to the beloved hymn “Tell It to Jesus” in a German hymnal called Fröliche Botschafter, published in 1876. Lorenz came from an Adventist family that emigrated from Russia to America. He was educated at Otterbein, Union Biblical Seminary, Yale, and the University of Leipzig before he was ordained. Later, he opened a music publishing company in Dayton, Ohio called Lorenz and Company.

Jeremiah E. Rankin translated this beloved hymn into English and published it in a hymnal called Gates of Praise in 1880. Rankin was born in Thornton, New Hampshire, and was educated at Middlebury College in Vermont and then at Andover Theological Seminary. He was the pastor of several churches in the New England area before he settled at First Congregational Church in Washington, D.C. for 15 years. Later, he was the president of Howard University.

“Tell It To Jesus”

Are you weary, are you heavy hearted?

Tell it to Jesus, tell it to Jesus.

Are you grieving over joys departed?

Tell it to Jesus alone.

Refrain

Tell it to Jesus, tell it to Jesus,

He is a Friend that’s well known.

You’ve no other such a friend or brother,

Tell it to Jesus alone.

Do the tears flow down your cheeks unbidden?

Tell it to Jesus, tell it to Jesus.

Have you sins that to men’s eyes are hidden?

Tell it to Jesus alone.

Refrain

Do you fear the gathering clouds of sorrow?

Tell it to Jesus, tell it to Jesus.

Are you anxious what shall be tomorrow?

Tell it to Jesus alone.

Refrain

Are you troubled at the thought of dying?

Tell it to Jesus, tell it to Jesus.

For Christ’s coming kingdom are you sighing?

Tell it to Jesus alone.

Refrain

“Tell It To Jesus” is a beloved hymn because it speaks of the faithfulness of the Lord to be there for His children.

I love the 4th verse of And Can It Be:

No condemnation now I dread;

Jesus, and all in Him, is mine!

Alive in Him, my living Head,

And clothed in righteousness divine,

Bold I approach th'eternal throne,

And claim the crown, through Christ my own.

Amazing love! How can it be

That Thou, my God, shouldst die for me?
