Administrators Naomi Posted July 26, 2012 Administrators Posted July 26, 2012 I understand your desire to leave The Great State Of Texas. I might, however, suggest that it appears you missed the better parts of TX ... certainly El Paso is not were I would stay for long. Marfa is interesing but you are a bit past it now. Moderators John317 Posted July 27, 2012 Author Moderators Posted July 27, 2012 I was stationed near El Paso for about 8 months while I was in the army, so I got to know this area really well back in 1969. That's one reason I want to spend some time here on this trip. Are you in or near Marfa? I see it's not far from Ft. Davis, an interesting place. I would love to visit Big Bend National Park some time. Quote John 3:16-17 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. Members phkrause Posted July 27, 2012 Members Posted July 27, 2012 I just got into El Paso this morning and expect to leave Texas in the next day or two. No offense to Texans but I would never stay in Texas permanently; I'm about ready to return to California. Is that the day that Sherman Hemsley died? Its interesting that he chose El Paso to live. Moderators John317 Posted July 28, 2012 Author Moderators Posted July 28, 2012 I got into El Paso the day after Hemsley died. It was in all the papers. He apparently lived on the east side of the city. He's reported to have said he chose El Paso over L.A. on account of the peacefulness of this town in comparison with the violence of Los Angeles. It can be very violent at times across the border in Juarez but El Paso itself is pretty peaceful. Quote John 3:16-17 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. I would love to visit Big Bend National Park some time. No, today I am quite a long way from Marfa & Big Bend. (: However, for 25 years that was a part of my territory. When time permitted I would drive so I could spend time in the Hill Country, then through Big Bend and a night or so in Marfa. The old hangers were donated to a friend for an international minimalistic art museum. I would spend a day or so at Marfa and enjoy the 'Marfa Lights' at night. El Paso has grown much since I started going there and I suspect you found a few changes since your days there. Your tour and pictures are awsome, thank you so very much for sharing. Moderators John317 Posted July 30, 2012 Author Moderators Posted July 30, 2012 Menudo is typically made from cattle. I suppose they could put pork in their menudo but they don't usually do that. Moderators John317 Posted July 30, 2012 Author Moderators Posted July 30, 2012 Was that when you were at Ft Sam Houston? No, Ft. Sam is in San Antonia but the building that was the Hotel McCoy where I used to stay on week-ends is in downtown El Paso. It is just two doors away from the El Paso Museum of Art. Moderators John317 Posted July 30, 2012 Author Moderators Posted July 30, 2012 What part of the country are you in now? It sounds like you are in Texas but of course Texas is a huge state, over 750 miles from one end to another. Moderators John317 Posted July 30, 2012 Author Moderators Posted July 30, 2012 Thanks very much Naomi. I'm delighted that you like the pics so far. I should say, though, that not all my photographs are intended to be "pretty" or beautiful. Sometimes it's essential to confront ugliness or things that are not so pretty, and I think that's one of the important jobs of photography/art.
