Members rudywoofs (Pam) Posted September 3, 2010 Members Posted September 3, 2010 My point was that the Spirit of Prophecy as referred to in Revelation 19:10, despite what many SDA's think, does not necessarily refer to EGW. It really irritates me that people use the phrase "Spirit of Prophecy" to refer to EGW. It's like saying she was specifically referred to in the Bible as THE prophet of all and to end all. I think she was inspired...at times. Now, I think I'll go play some poker. Quote Pam Meddle Not In the Affairs of Dragons; for You Are Crunchy and Taste Good with Ketchup. If we all sang the same note in the choir, there'd never be any harmony. Funny, isn't it, how we accept Grace for ourselves and demand justice for others?
SivartM Posted September 3, 2010 Posted September 3, 2010 I think if Ellen knew that one day she would be referred to as "the SOP", she would never have used the phrase. Overaged Posted September 3, 2010 Posted September 3, 2010 I think if Ellen knew that one day she would be referred to as "the SOP", she would never have used the phrase. I think that might be a misunderstanding? I have never heard Ellen White personally referred to as her being "the spirit of prophecy." Much of; but not all of her writings to the Church are considered "the spirit of prophecy." How would you describe "the spirit of prophecy", as it is referred to in the Bible? (Rev 19:10). If "the remnant" (or any church) has "the spirit of prophecy" what does that look like to you? How would you tell someone just what that was, and how we can recognize it? Never said it did, but that others within the church did teach. A big difference, since often the laity preach something different, believing it is official or should be official...hence the reason for many of the discussions on these forums! Much of; but not all of her writings to the Church are considered "the spirit of prophecy."/quote]It's sort of hard to tell the difference when you are listening to some people. But I have heard plenty of cases where Ellen White and/or her writings were referred to as "the SOP". Some random letter she wrote to her cousin in Iowa about cooking potatoes? Heed the voice of the SOP. At least they don't lowercase it and say "sop". quote]How would you describe "the spirit of prophecy", as it is referred to in the Bible? (Rev 19:10). If "the remnant" (or any church) has "the spirit of prophecy" what does that look like to you? Well; that is so true! It is very hard to tell when you listen to some people. I don't mind hearing what others say; for it can be interesting, and I can always learn something. But at the end of the day; I find it best to look into the Bible itself to draw any firm conclusions. I also agree that "SOP" is a distasteful way to describe "the spirit of prophecy." Your thought about it being "a spirit" rather than a person or a book is interesting. Have you read our fundamental belief about the spirit of prophecy? What do you think of it? doug yowell Posted September 3, 2010 Posted September 3, 2010 [Your thought about it being "a spirit" rather than a person or a book is interesting. Have you read our fundamental belief about the spirit of prophecy? What do you think of it? For clarity's sake, our founders felt strongly that EGW spoke positively and accurately, in a prophetic manner, of Christ.Hence they (unlike many today) referred to her ministry as being empowered by the "Spirit of Prophesy"(Rev.19:10). Those who concur, do likewise today. Right or wrong,it has become part of the Adventist dialect. Quote

I am not sure where you got that from; I don't see his name anywhere on the page; and looking at the updates to this page; the last one being August 10th; I didn't see his name either. But the point was not is it written by an Adventist; the point was does it reflect our officially stated belief? And the answer is no. SivartM Posted September 3, 2010 Posted September 3, 2010 Look at the revision history... he created the page, his name is all over it. Overaged Posted September 4, 2010 Posted September 4, 2010 Well; his name isn't "all over the page, but it is there. But so are a bunch of other names. I believe that I was correct when I used the word "activist" for it is plain to see that this youth pastor does have an agenda, which I might add, I have never seen any support of by the General Conference. As he himself states about his Wikipedia work: Quote: "My major drive is to improve the detail and neutrality of Christian theology articles, particularly those relating to WikiProject Seventh-day Adventist Church. I believe that popular and historical views have generally been overrepresented, at the expense of current scholarly views." This doesn't mean that some things he writes are not true; but it does mean that what he writes is different than the officially taught fundamental belief.
