The capital of Liberia is named after which U.S. President?

Answer: Monrovia is the capital city of the West African country of Liberia. Founded in 1822, Monrovia is named in honor of U.S. President James Monroe, a prominent supporter of the colonization of Liberia. Along with Washington, D.C., it is one of two national capitals to be named after a U.S. President. As the fifth president of the United States, James Monroe is known for his "Monroe Doctrine," disallowing further European colonization in the Americas. Monroe, who died in 1831, was the last of the Founding Fathers.

Answer: The Sea of Tranquility is the landing site of Apollo 11, the mission that gave mankind its first ever walk on the Moon. The Sea of Tranquility is not actually a sea, so Neil Armstrong didn’t have to walk on water. In fact, there isn’t a single sea on the lunar surface. The Sea of Tranquility is a dark spot located in the northern hemisphere of the Moon. The Sea of Tranquility is a lunar mare formed by ancient volcanic eruptions. They were dubbed maria, Latin for "seas", by early astronomers who mistook them for actual seas.

Whose tombstone bears the inscription “Quoth the Raven, ‘Nevermore.’”?

Answer: It is one of the most well-known lines in poetry: “Quoth the Raven, ‘Nevermore.’” Edgar Allan Poe’s famous poem “The Raven,” was published on this day in 1845. Edgar Allan Poe is buried in Baltimore where his tombstone bears the inscription “Quoth the Raven, ‘Nevermore.’” His poem “The Raven” tells the story of a man, tormented by loss, who becomes the unwilling host to a raven. The bird flies in through his window, perches on a rafter of the ceiling and refuses to leave, replying only “nevermore” to the narrator’s increasingly frantic questioning.

Which famous line is associated with former President Ronald Reagan?

Answer: "Tear down this wall!" is a line from a speech made by US President Ronald Reagan in West Berlin on June 12, 1987, calling for the leader of the Soviet Union, Mikhail Gorbachev, to open up the barrier which had divided West and East Berlin since 1961. This speech by President Ronald Reagan to the people of West Berlin contained one of the most memorable lines spoken during his presidency. Two years later, the barrier came down, to the delight of East and West Berliners alike. The two Germanys were officially reunited on Oct. 3, 1990.

The Pythagorean theorem helps calculate the size of which shape?

Answer: In mathematics, the Pythagorean theorem is a fundamental relation in Euclidean geometry among the three sides of a right triangle. The theorem can be written in one short equation: a² + b² = c². The theorem states that the square of the hypotenuse (the side opposite the right angle) is equal to the sum of the squares of the other two sides. The theorem, named after the ancient Greek mathematician Pythagoras, is used any time we have a right triangle, we know the length of two sides, and we want to find the third side.

Answer: In 1986, Clint Eastwood was elected mayor of his adopted hometown, Carmel-by-the-Sea, California. Eastwood served one two-year term as mayor of the small wealthy town and artist community. During his term he fulfilled the promise he made while campaigning for the office, which was to overturn a town ordinance banning eating ice cream cones in public. Eastwood was able to continue his acting and directing career during his mayoral term. He directed two films during that period, one of which earned him a Golden Globe win for Best Director.

Why? Why a Groundhog??

It does sound a bit odd at first, but there is a history here. Groundhog Day celebrates the idea that a groundhog's behavior at a certain point in time can predict weather patterns. This was based on an older belief held by German immigrants that badger and hedgehog shadows tied in with weather phenomena. The immigrants added groundhogs when they came over to the U.S. because groundhogs were more common, not to mention much less terrifying than the North American badger. This older belief was tied to the general European belief that February 2, also called Candlemas or Imbolc and known astronomically as a cross-quarter day, was really the beginning of spring. A sunny Candlemas meant the region was in for more wintry weather, hence the belief that if small woodland creatures could see their shadows, then people had to prepare for more cold weather.

When Was Groundhog Day First Celebrated in America?

On February 2, 1887, the first weather prognostication made by a groundhog in the United States was held in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, at Gobbler's Knob. His prediction is made in Groundhogese to the president of the Groundhog Club, who then interprets it to the gathered crowd as to whether winter is over or will continue for six more weeks. The legend is that the groundhog was named Punxsutawney, after the town, and Phil after King Philip, an early settler who lived in Plymouth, Massachusetts.

How Many Times Has the Groundhog's Prediction Been Correct?

As the legend goes, if Punxsutawney Phil sees his shadow on Feb. 2, six more weeks of winter weather lay ahead; no shadow indicates an early spring. Phil, a groundhog, has been forecasting the weather on Groundhog Day for more than 120 years, but just how good is he at his job?  Not very, it turns out.  According to the Groundhog Club's records, the various incarnations of Punxsutawney Phil have predicted 103 forecasts of more winter and 17 early springs. (There are nine years without any records.)  Data from the Stormfax Almanac's data shows that Phil's six-week prognostications have been correct about 39 percent of the time.

ps: So I ask: Why do we waste our time watching this foolish escape???

How Has the Meaning of the Term "Groundhog Day" Changed Over the Past Couple of Decades?

Thanks to the 1993 movie Groundhog Day, in which Bill Murray wakes up on Groundhog Day over and over again to repeat everything he's done, the colloquial meaning of "Groundhog Day" now includes situations that seem to repeat over and over again with no way out, with a reference to the movie usually tossed in.

Why Should English Speakers Carry a Lot of Change With Them if They Attend the Groundhog Day Ceremony?

The area around Punxsutawney was historically settled by people who spoke Pennsylvania Dutch, a German dialect ("Dutch" refers to "Deutsch," the German word for "German"), and the people who handle Phil conduct most of the ceremony in that language, though they call it Groundhogese. The audience is supposed to play along, and English speakers are fined for speaking English. However, those fines are usually in the form of 5 or 10 cents. If you don't speak Pennsylvania Dutch and don't think you can stay silent, bring a bunch of nickels and dimes with you.

Answer: Curiosity is a car-sized rover designed to explore Gale Crater on Mars as part of NASA's Mars Science Laboratory mission. Curiosity's mission is to determine whether the Red Planet ever was, or is, habitable to microbial life. The rover, which is about the size of a MINI Cooper, is equipped with 17 cameras and a robotic arm containing a suite of specialized laboratory-like tools and instruments. Curiosity was launched on November 26, 2011, and landed on Mars on August 6, 2012. As of today, Curiosity has been on Mars for 2006 days.
