Benjamin Franklin Julius Caesar Leonardo Da Vinci Isaac Newton Answer: Leap Year was “invented” back in the first century BC, when Julius Caesar and his team of astronomers noticed that their Roman calendar had somehow slipped out of sync with the seasons. They came up with a 365-day calendar that would sometimes add an extra day to the last month of the year, which was February. The purpose of adding an extra day to February every four years is to sync up the 365-day Gregorian calendar with the solar calendar, which is 365 days, 5 hours, 48 minutes, and 46 seconds long — the (near) exact amount of time it takes the earth to revolve around the sun. Quote phkrause When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; But when a wicked man rules, the people groan. Proverbs 29;2
Members phkrause Posted February 24, 2018 Author Members Posted February 24, 2018 18 hours ago, phkrause said: Who Invented The Vaccine For Polio? Jonas Salk was an American physician and medical researcher who developed the first safe and effective vaccine for polio. Polio was one of the most terrifying diseases in existence because of its seeming ability to appear out of nowhere. This wasn't something like the flu or a cold, where you had a pretty good idea of who around you had the disease; you could be out having fun and suddenly develop symptoms even though everyone around you would seem fine. In 1947, Salk took a position at University of Pittsburgh, where he began conducting research on polio, also known as infantile paralysis. By 1951, Salk had determined that there were three distinct types of polio viruses and was able to develop a "killed virus" vaccine for the disease. The vaccine used polio viruses that had been grown in a laboratory and then destroyed. The vaccine had a really high success rate and worked very quickly. The typical success rate was about 90 percent, which was a miracle considering Salk had found that polio was actually three similar viruses with 125 strains. He was able to create a vaccine that covered all of these types and strains and that did not cause recipients to be infected. 18 hours ago, phkrause said: Why Did Salk Never Patent His Vaccine? On April 12, 1955, the day the Salk vaccine was declared “safe, effective and potent,” legendary CBS newsman Edward R. Morrow interviewed its creator and asked who owned the patent. “Well, the people, I would say,” said Salk in light of the millions of charitable donations raised by the March of Dimes that funded the vaccine’s research and field testing. “There is no patent. Could you patent the sun?” Lawyers for the foundation had investigated the possibility of patenting the vaccine but did not pursue it, in part because of Salk’s reluctance. 18 hours ago, phkrause said: What Setback Did the Vaccine Have Early On? The vaccine was gaining a reputation as safe, fast, and effective in 1954 and 1955, until 200 people who received the vaccine suddenly developed the disease. An additional five people died. This did not look good, but swift investigation found that the batch of vaccine that these people had received had become contaminated with a live polio virus. The discovery led to tighter restrictions on production and to the introduction of better regulations. 18 hours ago, phkrause said: Which Countries Still Have Polio Outbreaks? Believe it or not, polio isn't gone. It still makes people sick, mainly in three countries: Nigeria, Afghanistan, and Pakistan. The World Health Organization notes that in 2016, there were only 37 cases of polio reported, but if countries stop vaccination programs, or if an infected person travels to an area where there are unimmunized people, then another outbreak could occur. Alabama Iowa Oklahoma Illinois Answer: The United States Postal Service has assigned a two-letter abbreviation to each of the 50 states. Modern two-letter abbreviated codes for the states and territories originated in October 1963, with the issuance of Publication 59: Abbreviations for Use with ZIP Code, three months after the Post Office introduced ZIP codes. Iowa (IA) is the only state in America with a two-vowel postal abbreviation code. The remaining states of Alabama (AL), Oklahoma (OK), and Illinois (IL) do not contain two-vowels in their official postal abbreviation. Members phkrause Posted February 25, 2018 Author Members Posted February 25, 2018 21 hours ago, phkrause said: Why Did Jobs Settle on the Name "Apple" for the Company? You have a fad diet to thank for this one. Yes, the beloved computer company "Apple" was so named because Jobs had been following a frutarian diet, in which he would eat mostly raw fruit. While the diet may have been questionable, the choice of name certainly paid off. Not only was it memorable and user-friendly, it allowed additional products to have names that were easily identified with Apple, such as the Macintosh (pronounced like the apple variety McIntosh but deliberately spelled differently). 21 hours ago, phkrause said: Why on Earth Was the First Apple Computer Priced at $666.66? You'd think you'd want the price of your first product to attract people and not scare them away. While most people wouldn't have considered Apple to be a demonic company for choosing a number that's reminiscent of Biblical apocalyptic tales, no doubt at least some people would be turned off by the number 666, which was supposed to be the mark of the Antichrist. The actual reason for the number was plain old math; when Jobs and Steve Wozniak, his partner in creating the Apple computer, figured out what the retail price of the computer would be, it ended up being $666.66, though Wozniak has said that he also set it there just because he likes repeating numbers. Oddly enough, the movie The Omen, about a family who finds out their young son is really the Antichrist, was released in 1976, the same year that the first Apple computer went on sale at that price. 21 hours ago, phkrause said: Steve Jobs' Mercedes Was Missing What One Thing That Virtually Every Other Car in the World Has? We all know Steve Jobs always wore the same outfit, but did you know he also always drove the same car. A silver Mercedes SL55 AMG. But there was something distinct about it: it never had a license plate. For most of us regular plebeians, a car without a license plate would be a problem, but not for Jobs. California law allows you to drive around without a license plate for up to six months after acquiring the car. So Jobs just leased a new car every six months. 21 hours ago, phkrause said: Starting in 1998, How Much Was Steve Jobs Paid Per Year by Apple? So how high was the annual salary for one of technology's greatest innovators? One dollar. That's right, just one dollar a year. Of course, Jobs was doing just fine financially. He owned billions of dollars of Apple and Disney stock. One estimate in 2010 said that he earned about $48 million a year off the 35-cent-per-share dividend Disney offered its shareholders. Guess it pays to own 138 million shares of one of the most successful stocks in history. Anteaters have no teeth, but a specialized tongue allows them to eat up to 30,000 ants and termites each day. The anteater’s narrow tongue is about 2 feet long and is shaped like a strand of spaghetti. All anteaters have elongated snouts equipped with a thin tongue that can be extended to a length greater than the length of the head. The long worm-like tongue of the anteater is anchored to the posterior end of the sternum and can be protruded extensively to assist in capturing its prey. People may unwillingly fall asleep even if they are in the middle of an activity like driving, eating, or talking. Comedian and talk show host Jimmy Kimmel suffers from narcolepsy. Kimmel made light of his condition by saying, “Truth be told, I'd rather have narcolepsy than not have it. When I get on a flight to Vegas, I'll fall asleep before the plane takes off and wake up after it's landed. I'm always very close to sleep.” Quote phkrause When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; But when a wicked man rules, the people groan. Proverbs 29;2
Members phkrause Posted February 27, 2018 Author Members Posted February 27, 2018 22 hours ago, phkrause said: What Casualties and Damages Resulted from the Bombing? The explosion, which came from a truck bomb in the parking garage of the Vista Hotel directly beneath 2 World Trade Center, created a crater roughly 100 feet in diameter that extended both several stories below and several stories above the explosion site. Six people, all close to the epicenter, were killed immediately, and roughly 1,000 more were injured. The explosion also caused the ceiling at the nearby PATH rapid transit station to collapse. Plumes of thick black smoke quickly filled the stairwells and elevator shafts of both of the complex's twin towers, which lost power in the wake of the explosion. An estimated 50,000 people were evacuated from the complex, most forced to make their way down smoke-filled staircases in darkness. 22 hours ago, phkrause said: What Key Piece of Evidence Led Investigators to the Bombers? Amidst the rubble created by the explosion, FBI investigators uncovered a vehicle identification number that appeared to have been deliberately, if imperfectly, obliterated. Shortly after finding the suspicious VIN, the FBI was able to match the number to that of a rented Ryder cargo van that had been reported stolen the day before the bombing. The van had been rented from Ryder by Mohammad Salameh, an Islamic fundamentalist, who showed up at Ryder offices on March 4 to demand the return of the $400 deposit on the van that he alleged had been stolen. FBI agents, waiting nearby, promptly arrested Salameh. 22 hours ago, phkrause said: What Master Terrorist Funded the Attack on the World Trade Center? Ramzi Yousef, one of the terrorists involved in the 1993 attack on the World Trade Center, was a nephew of Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, who funded the terror operation. After the capture of Mohammed in 2003, he admitted to being the mastermind behind many attacks. These included the 1993 World Trade Center bombing, the 9/11 bombing of the Twin Towers, the nightclub bombing in Indonesia and the shoe bombing attempt by Richard Reid in 2001. 22 hours ago, phkrause said: What Happened to the Terrorists in the Bombing? Six of the terrorists were convicted of the bombing: Ramzi Yousef, Mohammad Salameh, Mahmud Abouhalima, Ahmed Ajaj, Nidal Ayyad and Eyad Ismoil, who was the driver of the rented van. The seventh terrorist, Abdul Rahman Yasin, had been born in the United States and escaped to the Middle East, and his whereabouts remain unknown.
