Which type of animal was the first to be successfully cloned in 1997?

3 hours ago, dgrimm60 said:

DOLLY the sheep

Answer: Dolly the sheep made history in 1997, when the scientists who created her announced she was the first cloned mammal to survive. Scientists created Dolly in a test tube, after they figured out how to take a sheep egg cell, remove its DNA, and replace it with DNA extracted from a different sheep's skin cell. The newly fused cell was then implanted into a surrogate mother sheep, who gave birth to Dolly on July 5, 1996. Because Dolly’s DNA came from a mammary gland cell, she was named after the country singer Dolly Parton.

How Many Peanuts Comic Strips Did Schultz Publish in His Lifetime?

Over the 50 years that Peanuts was in print, Schultz created a whopping 17,897 comic strips—all by himself. That's right: Schultz wrote, drew, and inked every single Peanuts strip over the years, maintaining a strict 9 to 4, Monday through Friday work schedule his entire life. He only took one vacation his entire career, and it wasn't until he was 75 years-old. In the final cartoon, Schultz addresses that he was no longer able to keep up with the rigorous work schedule and was unwilling to hand-off responsibilities to another artist, which is why the comic came to an end on February 13, 2000, one day after Schultz's death.

How Many Newspapers Published Peanuts at its Peak?

When Schultz initially pitched the idea of Peanuts to the United Feature Syndicate in 1950, they picked it up for seven daily papers around the country. Years later, at the height of the strip's popularity, it was published in over 2,600 newspapers with global viewership 355 million in 75 different countries, 21 different languages.

How Many Peanuts Television Specials Have Been Made?

There have been 45 television specials, including possibly the most famous of them all: A Charlie Brown Christmas. That movie likely would have been a lot different if the network who aired it—CBS—had their way. The producers of the film did not like the music and felt the story moved too slowly and contained too many religious holiday references. They also wanted to include a laugh track, which Schultz vehemently argued against. He ended up getting his way and the film—which was commissioned by Coca-Cola—ended up winning an Emmy and Peabody Award.

What Was the Original Title of Peanuts Supposed to Be?

When Schultz pitched the cartoon to the United Feature Syndicate in 1950, Charlie Brown was part of a comic strip called L'il Folks. Though they liked the cartoon, they already had a comic with a similar name and changed Schultz's to Peanuts—a name he always disliked. The original comics were also missing two of the most popular characters: Linus and Lucy. When Lucy made her debut in 1952, she was a toddler in the strip and Linus, who also debuted in 1952, did not getting a speaking line until 1954.

Answer: Fahrenheit is a temperature scale that bases the boiling point of water at 212° and the freezing point at 32°. It was developed in 1734 by Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit, a German-born scientist who lived and worked primarily in the Netherlands. Today, the scale is primarily used in the United States, and is also used in the Cayman Islands, Palau, Bahamas and Belize. The rest of the world uses the Celsius scale. The Fahrenheit and Celsius scales converge at minus 40° F, so that minus 40° F and minus 40° C represent the same temperature.

Answer: One of the world’s most beloved toys was named in honor of President Theodore Roosevelt, after he refused to shoot a bear during a Mississippi hunting trip. On this day in 1903, toy store owner and inventor Morris Michtom places two stuffed bears in his shop window, advertising them as Teddy bears. Michtom had earlier petitioned President Theodore Roosevelt for permission to use his nickname, Teddy. The president agreed and, before long, other toy manufacturers began turning out copies of Michtom’s stuffed bears.

Answer: Have you ever wondered what the heck you would do with an Oscar if you won it? Timothy Hutton is the youngest male actor to win the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor, which he won at the age of 20 for his performance as Conrad Jarrett in Ordinary People (1980). Hutton recently said that he and his sister were having a party at his house several years ago and he decided to stick his Oscar in the fridge. They wanted people who went to grab a beer to be entertained and has kept it in the refrigerator ever since.

Answer: George W. Bush had a pair of Scottish Terriers named Barney and Miss Beazley, both of whom had websites and appeared in White House-produced web videos. The Bushes also had a black cat named India, who also went by "Willie." The name India rankled some citizens of the country of the same name to the point that many Indians named their dogs "Bush”. The name wasn't meant to be controversial, though; the Bushes merely named their cat after Ruben "El Indio" Sierra, who played for the Texas Rangers while George W. owned the team.

American Gothic

Answer: American Gothic is a painting by Grant Wood in the collection of the Art Institute of Chicago. It is one of the most familiar images in 20th-century American art, and has been widely parodied in American popular culture. The painting shows a farmer standing beside a woman that has been interpreted to be either his wife or his daughter. The figures were modeled by Wood's sister, Nan Wood Graham, and his dentist Dr. B.H. McKeeby. The man is holding a pitchfork, which symbolizes hard labor, and the flowers over the woman's right shoulder suggesting domesticity. Wood's inspiration came from what is now known as the American Gothic House, and his decision to paint the house along with "the kind of people I fancied should live in that house."

Answer: The iris is a thin, circular structure in the eye, responsible for controlling the diameter and size of the pupil and thus the amount of light reaching the retina. The color of the iris is often referred to as "eye color." The iris is usually strongly pigmented, with the color typically ranging between brown, hazel, green, gray, or blue. Despite the wide range of colors, the only pigment that contributes substantially to normal human iris color is the dark pigment melanin. The quantity of melanin pigment in the iris is one factor in determining the phenotypic eye color of a person.
