Moderators John317 Posted April 25, 2011 Author Moderators Posted April 25, 2011 Southern California It was a wonderful baptism and my daughters-- all three of them-- are still happy in the Lord, praise God! Our pastor, recently retired, is a member of the Wedgewood Trio, whose music you'll enjoy (I'm sure) after clicking on the link: http://www.ilike.com/artist/Wedgewood+Trio Their music is sold at the Adventist Book Centers. Quote: The Wedgwood Trio, gifted American folk singers from the South with their stringed instruments, experienced decidedly mixed reactions within the Seventh-day Adventist church when they began performing in the 1960s. For a church accustomed to congregational hymn singing and other traditional types of formal sacred music, the sound in the church sanctuary of a male trio singing mountain-style folk music accompanied on guitar, string bass, and banjo was jarring. While their music was viewed with alarm by many in the church, the youth, familiar with long-haired, poorly dressed performers doing rock music focused on the baser aspects of life and folk singers singing angry protest songs, embraced the well-dressed trio with its contemporary sound and wholesome music. From the perspective of nearly a half-century later, The Wedgwood Trio, with its upbeat sound and mix of folk music, creative arrangements of traditional Christian music, and original music, helped create a greater openness for newer forms of worship music in the Adventist church while providing an attractive alternative for a generation that otherwise might have left the church. From website: Quote: Don Vollmer, a gifted singer who would learn guitar after the trio was formed, had also come from a musical family where his father, a noted physician, and his mother were excellent musicians, who made music an important activity in their home. His voice was an inherited talent shared by others in his larger family, including an aunt, Dorothy Evans Ackerman, a well-known Adventist singer in the South and a voice teacher at SAU for over a quarter of a century.3 He was a classmate of Hoyle at Mount Pisgah Academy and was only a casual acquaintance with Summerour, having met him during visits to the youth camp. When Vollmer enrolled at Atlantic Union College following graduation from MPA in 1962, he and Hoyle kept in touch. Quote John 3:16-17 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. [17] For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.
Members phkrause Posted April 25, 2011 Members Posted April 25, 2011 Praise the Lord. And I have always enjoyed the Wedgewood. I can remember a time back in the late '60s when they were banned from some places. Also on one of my furlows from the Army, I believe Jan '68, I went up to AUC to visit my friend Alex and the Wedgewood Trio played for Sabbath Vespers and half the people, mostly faculty got up and left. Not sure why they even bothered to come to the concert when in my opinion they already knew what and whom they were. I guess they wanted to make a statement. Not sure if they accomplished what they thought they did, because it wasn't more than a few years later everything was fine with the Wedgewood. Moderators John317 Posted April 25, 2011 Author Moderators Posted April 25, 2011 Yes, I love their music, too. I remember them from the 1960s but I didn't listen to them. I was too busy listening to all the rock 'n'roll. But I remember other students at the Adventist Academy talking about them and playing their music in that same style in chapel. I bet those same people wish now that they could only have to complain about the music of the Wedgewood Trio. That was nothin' by comparison. I remember when people were complaining about Elvis' gospel music, like "Take My Hand, Precious Lord," but I love it. I guess "to each his own," as they say. The image was made with a cheap digital camera that I got from AOL for under $25.00. Moderators John317 Posted April 25, 2011 Author Moderators Posted April 25, 2011 Riverside Co., Southern California During WW, General George Patton made our town his head-quarters while training his tank corp that would go on to whip the Nazis in North Africa. He doesn't know it but his head-quarters burned down a couple of years ago. My apologies, General. The mural on the wall was painted over recently in a feeble attempt to beautify the town. Now all there is to look at is a blank wall. Maybe they wanted to forget what main street looked like when the General would come into town with his tank crews. Taken with Nikon 35mm. 2) The same building about 10 years later, after artists went to work on it. It's still an abandoend building but if a building in our town is going to be abandoned, we demand that it at least look good while doing it. All ugly, do-nothing buildings are absolutely prohibited. The town has been something of an art colony since long before WWII. Moderators John317 Posted April 25, 2011 Author Moderators Posted April 25, 2011 Riverside Co., California We love trailer parks here, and I like wandering through them snapping pictures and talking to the people who live in them. I've always had an interest in the way we live in Southern California, and here is one of those ways. The cars and trailers look to me as if they will stay just this way forever. No one's moving from Kozy Trailer Park. Ever. Quote John 3:16-17 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. The freeway going east will take you in about five hours to Phoenix, Arizona; if the traffic's going good, the opposite direction-- which is due west-- will take you in a couple of hours into those fair sister cities, Los Angeles and Hollywood. I hope they like our motel. It's not the greatest but it's ours. Moderators John317 Posted April 25, 2011 Author Moderators Posted April 25, 2011 This is California Liv'n. The sign on the car says "Care For California." It's at a different trailer court from the one where the other picture was taken. Our town has four, and all of them are fairly small but they are all at least as nice & kozy as this one. Everybody's real friendly, too. Especially the dogs. Quote John 3:16-17 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. This is near the corner of one of our town's busiest intersections, only a block or so from the court house and city hall. I like the clouds and the shadows and the colors. I like, too, the way the trash container looks empty but isn't. This scene is just down the street from where I live, something that was strictly coincidental. It just worked out that way. Quote John 3:16-17 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. Some day I will. It looks cozy doesn't it. A small church for a small town, by California standards. Pop. 23,000. I think most are on welfare or disability. We have a large population of Indians on the reservation here and they're rich from the casino. A lot of whites come and get rid of their money there. The Indians were told by the tribe not to gamble but to let the "dumb white man do the gambling." That's what my Indian friend told me, and I believe it. He sometimes pays me $20.00 to drive him a couple of blocks to the liquor store for a six-pack. His wife died of cancer about a year before he got rich. He now makes $5,000+ a month just for being a registered half Indian. I told him truly I'm happy for him. He deserves it. His great-grandmother was forced to come here in the 1890s. She was told one day to pack up her few belongings and get in the wagon and then they drove her the 70 miles to the reservation. So now her great-grandson is a rich half breed who's able to pay a pale-face $20.00 to drive him two blocks for a six-pack of beer. Now a lawyer's and an insurance agent's office, it used to be a hotel and boarding house where weary travelers stayed after a journey by stage coach from Los Angeles or Yuma, Arizona. A young Wyatt Earp used to ride shot-gun on the stage coach before becoming the U.S. Marshal at Tombstone, Arizona, and getting in that shoot-out at the OK Corral. As a kid I used to come here and rent a canoe with a boy who lived next door to us in Loma Linda, only about 15 miles down the road. I never ate meat then, but our neighbors, who came from Memphis, slaughtered their own chickens and hogs. They eventually became SDAs about the time I went into the army. (My mother gave their mother Bible studies.) The bait shop is closed now and the lake's somebody's private property. Has been in several film, including American Quilt. A good story about true love. Never saw it but I saw trailers and I read about it when they were making it. The theater no longer looks like it does in the photograph. They messed it up when they renovated it last year. It's next door to the building (in photo #2) that had the mural of the main street of our town on it, but the town fathers had it painted over so now it's just a boring blank wall. I hate it when they do that. Quote John 3:16-17 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. Moderators John317 Posted April 27, 2011 Author Moderators Posted April 27, 2011 Veterans of My American Legion Post It was my very first visit and they didn't know who in the world I was. As soon as they found out, though, they turned out to be friendlier than they look. Here they're shown getting ready to go to a funeral where they help bury other veterans. I like going there but honestly I don't really fit in. Besides, I don't drink any more and all of their meetings are on the Sabbath. I used to go to their monthly steak dinners, but I no longer eat red meat, either. I do like their big-screen TV but they never watch what I like. It's just down the street from me so it's nice to know that if I wanted to I could watch football and drink beer with the men. They tell me the door there is always open. Moderators John317 Posted April 27, 2011 Author Moderators Posted April 27, 2011 Our town's only train station. It's just a mural now. I think it sits in the same location as the real one did before and during World War II. When I was a teen-ager I remember riding through this town on the freight trains going from Yuma to Colton. The painted trains are fun to watch too. At first, I was angry at the tree for being right where I wanted to take the picture, but now I can see that it was exactly where it was supposed to be.
