SDA's Have A New Prophet.

However since Soo, or those retelling her story, have claimed the angel gave her the Ellen White Estate's phone number and a contact name there (I forget the name) and he verified the number was correct, wouldn't it behoove the White Estate to clarify that?

I've been trying to stay out of this one. But I have one question.

Does Soo anywhere claim to have a message for the SDA church? or did she just have a message for her people?

If it's the former, then the question of whether the SDA's have a new prophet is appropriate.

If it's the latter, then let's let her people (the ones for whom she claims to have a message) make the determination, and let's us stay out of it.

Seems to me like we're expending a lot of effort on something that's not really about us at all.

In the old film, "Greyfriar's Bobby," a group of street urchins are invited into the rectory for a meal. One of them prays over the meal inaudibly. Another boy objects, in his thick Scot's accent. "I couldna' hear wha' you were sayin'"

The other boy replied. "I wasna' talkin' to you."

Maybe God is talking through Soo, but isn't talking to the whole SDA denomination through Soo.

I don't know whether she's a prophet at all, and I'm increasingly inclined to think I don't need to know. She isna' talkin' to me.

The angel's message was for Soo to go to the SDA church and study the truth. It seems to be more of a message for Soo than anyone else.

However some are focusing on part of the message the angel gave regarding an event in 2005 and the Sunday laws to follow closely behind. However her English is so poor I couldn't really tell exactly what she was saying about that. However, even that seemed to be a message for her. I didn't see where she was told to give that message to the church. And does she need to? Don't we already know the coming of Jesus is soon?

Shane, you and I often have some differences of opinion.

We seem to be getting together on this one.

Hey guys,

At first, I was thinking that her message was for her and her people also. But why was she given these names of top SDA evangelists if this was not to be for the general membership?

Would it not be encouraging to see that God still cares for His church and desires His people to come out of Babylon to join her? For that is what I see the message is all about.

Or am I way off base, also?

Re: "Is this true? Has the White Estate confirmed the number was correct? The statement posted here didn't confirm that."

How would the EGW Estate confirm that? A reasonable person would have to assume that the number claimed to be given to her for the EGW Estate would be thier telephone number. I don't think that there would be one chance in 100 that it would be wrong. That number is published all over the world. It is available on the Internet. There is no reason that it would be wrong.

How would anyone confirm, or deny, that an angel gave it to her. Just about impossible.

Once one agrees that an angel may have given her the number to the White Estate, the question becomes: So what? i.e What does that fact mean? [This question still remains if one were to decide that she did not recieve the number from an angel.]

If God gave her that number, I do not automaticly assume that God sent her to the White Estate with a message from God. The history of our church mission work is replete with stories of people who told in dreams, and by other means, that they should go to . . ., listen to . . ., or by some other means were brought into contact withe our evangelists/missionaries.

Folks, this is the activity of God, in human life, bringing people to salvation. God may have worked in Soo's life, in a manner not typical of how God has worked in our lives, to effect her salvation. Praise God for His saving mercies. But, do not go beyond the clear leading of God to extrapolate her experience out into other venues.

NOTE: What I have said here could apply to the story of the mention of SDA evangelists.

The history of ALL denominations is replete with such stories.

The story of Soo being asked by the angel to contact Roger Coon of the Ellen G. White Conference does not come from Soo herself. Rather it is told by another person who is making claims for her.

I am looking at a 5-page publication from one such person right now. In that publication, the name of the author is not given, but it clearly is not Soo, unless she write in the personna of another person. It is of interest to me that the author of this publication has a limited grasp of the English language. It is full of gramatical errors, and strange sentence structure.

There is also an interesting cultural message in this publication. The author implies that one reason that Soo was chosen to "deliver the message to Advenist" is that Soo "is a virgin." and that her Buddhist life had led her to be "pure".

I’m sure you have read the following portion of the report by:

Calvin Thrash, III

President

Uchee Pines Institute (where Soo worked for 2 years)

http://www.ucheepines.org/Soo.htm

What I cannot verify, since she (Soo) never mentioned it:

Any reference to a miraculous healing of cancer

The angel’s name

References to catastrophic events, either past or future

Any specific times or dates.

=============

Soo worked at Uchee Pines SDA medical institution for two years, yet did not reveal the above information until just recently. Why? Why not rejoice with them about her miraculous healing? The warning about NY should have been given in 2000 IF the information really was given to her at that time—as reported. And would God speak prophetically to us through a pagan woman? Her vague 2005 statement could be made by anyone.

Did her asking the pastor if HE loves Jesus qualify SOO for baptism, without an understanding of basic Bible doctrines? Why did she not learn basic Bible doctrines between Oct 2000 and when baptized in June 2002? The Bible is available in the Lao Language. These are some of my concerns. There is a Lao SDA church in Sacramento and a group in San Diego. There are also 4 SDA churches in Laos with about 700 members. Why would SOO be chosen for translations, considering her inadequate understanding of English--even after over a decade of living in Australia and the U.S.?

We need to be very cautious about accepting information through spiritual manifestations—especially if they are not in complete harmony with the revealed Word of God. We need both a revival and a reformation; but this will not come as a result of exciting messages from angels.

Of course, by the same standard, we could not have accepted Ellen G. White as a prophet, since when she first received the prophetic gift, she was a Sunday-keeper who held many false doctrines she learned from her former church. It is interesting that God never corrected any of these false doctrines with the visions He gave her. Nor did He prevent her from expressing these views. These wrong views were only corrected through the Bible study of her brethren, sometimes years later.

I suspect that many of us have a false view of what a prophet is, confusing this somehow with the pagan idea of an oracle who supposedly knows all. Receiving the prophetic gift means God gives the prophet messages for the prophet to relay to the people. It does not mean God gives the prophet some kind of a "brain boost" where all of a sudden every thought and understanding of the prophet is now infallible.

Some of our most vocal critics cannot understand the simple fact that prophets are not superhumans, they have their own baggage to deal with.

I question the total accuracy of Ron's comment.

He points out to the false doctrines that EGW held: Well, no one in EGWs time had all of those correct doctrines. God established the SDA Chruch because there was a message to be given to the world. In many ways, God had to take from what was available.

Soo, came into being in a time when God had a people who could have taught her. The origional question has validity.

I clearly agree with the last part of his post. That was a good statement.

Gregory, do you remember the accounts of the lengthy Bible studies around 1848 by the early SDA's, when Ellen G. White said that her mind seemed to be "locked up" and she was not permitted to partcipate in the studies? She said that only after the brethren had arrived at a consensus from their study of the Bible alone was she given a vision which confirmed the accuracy of their conclusions. I think it is important for us to see God's purpose in this. He means for us to establish everything we believe from the Bible alone, and He is really serious about it. We should be too, far more than some of us are.

Ron:

Yes, I remember. I totally agree with this comment of yours.

In ancient SDA history, our doctrines were first thought to be formulated in the so-called five Bible Conferences. I am well aware of them.

If you watched the videos you would know the answer. Because no one would believe her. That is why. If an angel came and spoke to you, how many people would you tell?

Modern Revivals

You know, God undoubtedly speaks to many people, SDAs and non-SDAs, through dreams and visions, but what are we looking for? Another Ellen G. White? She was more than a prophet, she was practically a Moses. Or at least, a Samuel.

Are we looking for another Moses or Samuel to lead us? Or are we willing to receive whatever testimonies from the Lord that the Lord gives various people to share with us? Personally, I do not think the desire to find another Ellen G. White is healthy. Prophets we need, yes, but not some special spiritual leader to take over the reins of control of the church and lead us into the promised land. When people look for that, what they find is offshoots.

In this day and age, no true prophet is going to say, "Follow me." Too many of us many be looking for someone to follow. Only Satan will supply that desire for us. He knows that God expects us to follow Christ alone, and when we look for humans to follow, that gives Satan grounds for bringing his deceptions to us.

An a bit lost as to what you mean by this?

David:

I think that I can respond. If I am wrong, Ron can correct me.

I remind you that our early SDAs, to include our leadership, came from a diversity of religious backgrounds. They ranged from the Episcopal to the Christian denomination (an actual denomination). They had varried views on just about everything form the episcopate, to the nature of God, to just about everything else.

During the five so-called Bible Conferences, our early leaders attempted to hammer out a concensus on what they considered to be the major doctrinal issues. In general, they achieved that concensus.

Ellen White attended those Conferences. But, they were structured in a manner that she did NOT lead out in developing the denomination views. Rather, the concensus was obtained by the participents going to the Bible, and engaging in Bible study, not EGW.

This is possibly one aspect.

However, there is another aspect of this issue.

Those Bible Conferences did not cement all of SDA doctrine and life. The formative denomination grew in a number of areas over a period of time. I will list a couple of examples, but there are more.

The question of eating "unclean" animal products was resolved over a period of time. It is clear that EGW continued to eat such after some of the other leaders had come to believe that such should not be eaten. In addition, the question as to what comprised unclean animal products took some time to resolve. Among those who had accepted the general idea that such should not be eaten, there was not total agreement. Some continued to eat oysters after giving up other products. EGW was one who on occasion ate oysters after she had given up other products. In time, she came to understand as we commonly do now, and brought her life into compliance.

In regard to Sabbath keeping, and the time to begin the Sabbath, understanding and compliance came over a period of time, and this included EGW.

Please bear with me on this but I still don't understand this.

Personally I don't believe Ellen White is a prophet but hey that's my own truth, and my salvation (like millions of believers) doesnt depend on accepting her as a prophet. Still I hope one day we can meet in heaven to have a chat over what all the fuss was about. In the meantime however.......

1) Whilst a prophet is not infallible, surely a prophetic word from the Lord is?

2) Is there a precedent of a "mistake" about a prophetic revelation by any other?

3) How do we know what is or is not insipired?

Am not casuing trouble, but just trying to understand those who do consider her a prophet and on what basis
