Rick Warren ...

Yes. He teaches dependence on self. He says what we need the most is more self esteem, more looking within ourselves for answers. That is not what the Bible teaches. What we really need most is a relationship with Jesus Christ. More dependence on Him, not self.

These kinds of posts just amaze me Richard. He says this and he says that ... But no references. I'm willing to bet my house that if you asked him if he believes as you have accused ... that he would say definately not.

May we be one so that the world may be won.

I found it to be a bit "new age-y"..

What does "new age-y" mean to you, rudywoofs? Is it a bad thing?

Does it pull people away from a basic dependence on Jesus as their Guide and Companion?

I like the idea of letting the Spirit lead on this. God knows who has and who hasn't. He is well able to direct, if we let Him.

Besides, it also gives us a legitimate reason for saying No when we need to!

By New Age, I'm talking about using things like meditation, "feel good" tactics that aren't Christ-based. I can't say it would be bad for everyone, but it would be bad for me, given my background in the occult.

If we all sang the same note in the choir, there'd never be any harmony.

Funny, isn't it, how we accept Grace for ourselves and demand justice for others?

He teaches dependence on self, instead of dependence on God. In a subtle way of course.

Have you never heard of the "New Age Movement"? Books of a new order, and all that. EGW said it would happen and it has. It's not even new anymore.

Yes. He teaches dependence on self. He says what we need the most is more self esteem, more looking within ourselves for answers. That is not what the Bible teaches. What we really need most is a relationship with Jesus Christ. More dependence on Him, not self.

It's just another babylonian, money making, feel good religion, that leads millions astray. It looks good if you just glance at it, and don't look to deep. But isn't that the way it is with all of Satan's deceptions?

Thank you for the insight. Judging from your response you are probably very conscious of "self" being your greatest enemy. I would probably react to the book the same way as I see myself as my greatest enemy, right after the prince of darkness himself. Therefor any books that point in the direction of self-determination for success, I shy away from them.

That, of course, does not mean Jesus can't give me purpose far beyond any self-help book.

That kind of meditation that him and others like him teach, is not the kind the Bible speaks of. In fact, people using those techniques can invite evil spirits in without even knowing it. That's why God wants us to stay separated from babylon.

Yes, I have heard a lot of different comments about it. OTOH I've never been motivated to look into it, as the Bible, praise God, has for many years fulfilled all my sense of lack.

This does not mean in any way, that it's always been the case, for when I was younger I use to devour self-help books, constantly seeking ways to "mature" into the successful person I never seemed to be able to find.

Finally after seeing my world fall apart in divorce and lack of personal self control, all without the aid of drugs and alcohol, I found in Jesus strength that allowed me not to have to depend on the approval of others for satisfaction, but recognizing that returning to Jesus every night and every morning for the washing of the Word, gave me satisfaction in Him that precluded every worldly triumph I had at one time felt so necessary.

"My soul is also sore vexed: but thou, O LORD, how long?

Return, O LORD, deliver my soul: oh save me for thy mercies' sake.

For in death there is no remembrance of thee: in the grave who shall give thee thanks?" Psalm 6:3-5 KJV

I'm not talking about meditating on Christ...I'm talking about the meditation of the Eastern Tradition where you repeat something over and over again to try and empty out your mind. It gives Satan an entry point into your soul....at least that's how it happened with me.

It happens to a lot of people. They are sucked in by these Rick Warren types, and don't know what real meditation is. And thus they are led down a wrong and unGodly path.

As I recall, we have counsel that states it would be good to spend an hour a day contemplating on the life of Jesus, especially the closing scenes.

"The Jews therefore strove among themselves, saying, How can this man give us his flesh to eat?

Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, ye have no life in you.

Whoso eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day."John 6:52-54 KJV

My understanding of this Scripture is that Jesus was using a metaphor here, referring to the Word written. What a promise for those who practice what He asks.

I don't believe the promise is fulfilling for those who merely read to prove a point, but it's been especially fulfilling for those who apply the Word they take in for their own spiritual life.

He talks about meditation in his book. I don't have the book anymore, so I can't give you chapter and page numbers.

If you really want to find out about the book, go ahead and read it...maybe you already have?

Yes ... Ellen White and scripture encourage it also. I was just wanting to know what kind of meditation he was talking about. Was it the Eastern kind of chant that you were referring to?

I didn't get that from what I heard in his pray that day Obama was sworn in. But I agree that if something makes one feel that way they should stay away. But for those that feel that he brings them closer to Jesus I think that is also a good thing for them. And I agree with you Richard about what EGW has stated, and am happy that you are not asleep, because things can be very subtile and the next thing your wondering "how did I get here?"

EGW and scripture doesn't promote the kind of meditation that these new agers do. Their kind is quite dangerous. Just like Pam said.

We need to keep on topic. I am trying to discuss Rich Warren. And I certainly don't consider him a "new ager". If anyone feels he is ... I would love to have some references.

There are other websites that offer info on the new spirituality as well if you do a websearch on "Rick Warren new age

Please remember that it was just my own opinion that Rick Warren's books sounded new age to me based on my own life experiences.
