Dr. Shane Posted July 22, 2010 Posted July 22, 2010 Spanish is the language spoken in our home. (We actually got to put that on the census form.) Over half of my workers don't speak English. So yes, I speak Spanish all the time. Not a day goes by without speaking it. In fact, I often speak Spanish without realizing that I am speaking it. Asi es la cosa. Quote Pastoral Family Counselor... Members rudywoofs (Pam) Posted July 22, 2010 Author Members Posted July 22, 2010 No you don't speak Spanish all the time. You might speak Spanish all the time at home, but not everywhere and to everyone you meet. Don't your children understand English? If not, you're setting them up to be handicapped in later life. (That is, if they choose to stay US citizens...) Quote Pam Meddle Not In the Affairs of Dragons; for You Are Crunchy and Taste Good with Ketchup. Moderators Kevin H Posted July 22, 2010 Moderators Posted July 22, 2010 Among theological circles there is a big debate over what language we will speak in heaven. On the one hand you have theologians who say that English will be the heavenly language. Their argument is that it has to be because American's can't learn any other language... The other side of the debate agrees with that basic piece of evidence but argues that there will be so few if any Americans in heaven that they can get by with just a couple of translators. Quote

Rondo Posted July 22, 2010 Posted July 22, 2010 I couldn't disagree with you more. The immigrants ought to be learning English. We don't want to follow Canada with English and French mandated for every government pamphlet. What a waste. I you are Spanish speaking and want to come here so badly, learn English. Neil D Posted July 22, 2010 Posted July 22, 2010 Are we talking about what language will be in heaven or the benefits of learning a second language??? If the language of heaven, may I suggest that the only language acceptable is the language of love......All other languages will be left at the gate.... If we are talking about the benefits of learning a second language, may I remind you that learning a second language give one a different perspective and a wider influence...even in one's own country.... If we are talking about sending all non-english speaking immigrants back to thier non-english speaking countrys, then may I suggest that this thread be moved to a more political forum....say politics??? Members rudywoofs (Pam) Posted July 22, 2010 Author Members Posted July 22, 2010 It's not political to expect someone to speak English if they are American citizens. I agree it's nice to be bilingual, trilingual, or multilingual. As I said, I can speak German. I don't think the language of heaven is going to be any of the languages spoken here on earth. It's annoying to read that people think *their* language is so special that it will be the one in heaven. It's an alienating thing to write. aldona Posted July 22, 2010 Posted July 22, 2010 Quote: Don't your children understand English? If not, you're setting them up to be handicapped in later life. I challenge anybody to raise a child in an English-speaking nation (like the USA or Australia) who cannot understand any English by the age of 3-4. Even if the parents do not utter a word of English at home, they will pick it up from other people, whether at church, in the street, at the child care center, from other kids, from the TV and radio, from grandparents, aunts and uncles... My parents always spoke Polish at home and when I started school, I knew very little English. I picked it up very quickly and since then I have found it very easy to pick up a very basic understanding of other languages. (I'm not fluent in any other languages, but I can read a store sign in another language, or listen to an opera in Italian or Schubert songs in German and figure out what they're talking about quite easily.) And it seemed like the bilingual kids at school (those who barely spoke any English when they started) were always the ones at the top of the class. Hardly seems like a "handicap" to me. I'm watching with interest the kids of some of my Polish friends who married Filipino spouses. Some of those kids are only 3-4 years old and are already fluent in English, Polish and Tagalog. And they know which language to speak to which relative. They can be talking to Mom in Tagalog and then turn to Grandma and speak in Polish without missing a beat. It's going to be fascinating to watch their development as they get older. Rondo Posted July 26, 2010 Posted July 26, 2010 @Neil D. The Language of Love, OK, you go first with the linguistics. The benefit of learning a second language is a known fact, BUT the confusion of having more than one business language is also proven in Montreal, Quebec, where French is the Business Language. English is and should be the USA official business language. Notice the RECOMMENDATION to new immigrants: http://www.uscis.gov/files/nativedocuments/M-618.pdf (page 60) Quote: Speaking English at WorkIf you do not speak English, try to learn it as soon as possible. You can find free or low-cost English language classes in your community, often through the local public schools or community college. Knowing English will help you in your job, your community, and your daily life. See page 60 for more information on learning English. Your suggestion of sending everyone back that can't speak English is problematic, just like trying to assimilate in Japan without learning the primary language. You have to be productive and without the language you are truly hampered there or here. Quote The 10 essence of Old Covenant

whbae Posted July 26, 2010 Posted July 26, 2010 In this country, not only the government but also people are bending backwards to please Spanish speaking people. If they come in as illegal immigrants, government place them on welface and pay their children's education! The business people as well as our governmetn encourage not to speak English as the official language. I have nover heard any one saying "if you speak Korean, press 3". In New Jersey, this Spanish speaking convicted drunked driver got off scot free. His lawyer claimed that at the time of arrest he did not understand English so he agreed to the breathlizer test. Now, NJ law offers are required to speak different language at the time of arrest of a foreigner. What a stupid government people! If you are arrested while entering North Korea or Iran illegally you go to jail. If you enter U.S. illegally you get financial reward. I think I will go back to my native country and enter again illegally to get all those benefits the U.S. government provides. Won Quote
