bonnie Posted July 31, 2010 Posted July 31, 2010 This is correct. Americans can speak any language they want... but they do have know the language first. I may want to speak Korean but if I don't know the language, I can want all I want but it isn't going to happen. I may want to fly airplanes too, but if I never learned how, it isn't going to happen. However, the point is that our government isn't going to tell me I have to fly airplanes or that I have to speak Korean. I have the freedom to decide. Let freedom ring. No comparison, unless you are saying you can should be able to choose if you want to work and the rest of the americans have to feed you for life, Quote Everything you do is based on the choices you make. It's not your parents, your past relationships, your job, the economy, the weather, an argument, or your age that is to blame. You and only you are responsible for every decision and choice you make, period ... ... Wish more people would realize this. Quotes by Susan Gottesman
Members rudywoofs (Pam) Posted July 31, 2010 Author Members Posted July 31, 2010 NOTE TO ADMINISTRATOR: Please lock this thread. It is serving no other purpose now except to allow Shane to push his own ideology on others. It is not dealing with the original topic. To Tom Wetmore: I never said I was not rude in using German. I and Olger did use German one time ... Shane's use of spanish continued in the thread after being asked not to. That was not only rude, but insulting. Put that in your pipe and smoke it. To Shane: I am not allowed to write what I would like to say to you. Quote Pam Meddle Not In the Affairs of Dragons; for You Are Crunchy and Taste Good with Ketchup. If we all sang the same note in the choir, there'd never be any harmony. Funny, isn't it, how we accept Grace for ourselves and demand justice for others?
Dr. Shane Posted July 31, 2010 Posted July 31, 2010 Learning English in America is just like any other skill. There are people that speak English here but do not know how to read and write it. The greater education a person has, the more money they can make. That is undeniable. However we don't force adults to get an education. We offer free literacy programs so people can learn to read but we don't force anyone to take them. The same is true with ESL. We offer free ESL programs but do not force anyone to take them. America is all about freedom. Now some people cannot discuss this without getting our welfare system confused in it. Well, it is true that those that do not speak English are more likely to be low-income and thus eligible for welfare. Those that get divorced are also more likely to be low-income and thus eligible for welfare. Those that are illiterate are more likely to be low-income and eligible for welfare. Those that drop out of high school are more likely to be low-come and eligible for welfare. There are hundreds of factors that make a person more likely to be low-income and eligible for welfare. Welfare is really separate subject from immigration and America's second language. Quote Pastoral Family Counselor... Find me at www.PostumCafe.com Author of Peculiar Christianity

Renewed_faith Posted July 31, 2010 Posted July 31, 2010 Quote: I think we are still on topic. Spanish in America and those that are intolerant of it. Incorrect: Quote: And it's getting so that unless you can speak Spanish as well as English, some companies will not hire you. Isn't that discrimination? That is the topic discussion. Where do you see the words..... "and those that are intolerant of it" Last time I read it, (just a few seconds ago) no where were those words said. Point them out to all of us and show us the WORDS that you say are the topic. Please? I AM getting old so it very well could have slipped my eyes. Quote
Dr. Shane Posted July 31, 2010 Posted July 31, 2010 To tolerate something means to put up with something. I may tolerate my children fighting for a period of time. Then when I decide I am not going to tolerate it any more, I tell them, "I am tired of you fighting." Then they know they better stop because I am done tolerating it. Administrators Tom Wetmore Posted August 1, 2010 Administrators Posted August 1, 2010 Would they do all this in English if a bunch of us decided to go to their country ?? LOL. I think not. Pretty much wherever the British Empire settled down, English became the dominant and official language, even though it was not the native tongue of the majority. Think of India, a number of African nations, and even at least one country in Latin America, Belize, where the majority (at least in the parts where I was) spoke Spanish and very little English. Much to the annoyance of the French English became the dominant language of international diplomacy/relations. In other countries, signage is often at least bilingual, one of which is most often English. Many, if not most, Americans traveling overseas become perturbed when they can't find someone that speaks English. You have heard the rant against the snobbish French that have the temerity to expect you to speak French and refuse to use their perfectly good English language skills while conversing in their country. Sounds familiar... Quote "Absurdity reigns and confusion makes it look good." "Sinless perfection is such a shallow goal." "I love God only as much as the person I love the least." *Forgiveness is always good news. And that is the gospel truth. (And finally, the ideas expressed above are solely my person views and not that of any organization with which I am associated.)

Members rudywoofs (Pam) Posted August 1, 2010 Author Members Posted August 1, 2010 GP! Not to be too controversal but it looks to me that the topic is speaking spanish in Heaven? Or am I in the wrong thread? I started the topic because the Union paper printed a statement by someone that the language in heaven was going to be spanish. That irritated me because I did not think Spanish was somehow better than Chinese, English, French, Portuguese, Korean, German, Italian, Yiddish, Norwegian, Swedish, Polish, Czech, Swahili, Arabic, Hawaiian, Cherokee, Baseball, Basketball, Football, Soccer, Chess, Pomeranian, Maltese, Bernese, Rottweiler, Poodle, Daffodil, Lilac, Hemlock, Cedar, Lava, Agate, Brimstone, Fire, Water, Kool-Aid, Marmite, Linkette, Potato, Boll Weevil, Spinach, Broccoli, Tomato, Gay, Straight, Crooked, Chrysler, Dodge, Ford, Studebaker, Toyota, etc. Since it was Spanish that was mentioned as being "the language of heaven," it reminded me of the irritation when I can't get someone on the phone for emergency immediate help because one must wait for the Spanish to stop before doing or saying anything. It is as if you are something special and extraordinary if you happen to speak Spanish. The United States was founded as an English-speaking country. The Declaration of Independence and the Constitution are in English. Congress is conducted in English. The Supreme Court conducts its business in English. I do believe the Presidential branch of government also conducts its responsibilities in English. My ancestors either came here already speaking English, or they learned to speak it so that they could be a part of their new homeland. Some still speak German at home, but never to the general public. So I included that in my soapbox. Shane came out with his machete and chihuahuas to defend Hispanic people's rights, which was NOT the topic. But it became intertwined in the thread because people who REFUSE to learn English in the United States should not be given preferential treatment, especially when it infringes on other people's rights. Shane apparently feels that Spanish-speaking-only people should be given preferential treatment in all areas of life in the United States. I don't. And neither does my Hispanic friend and neighbor of nearly 20 years. She came from Mexico, learned English, and has a good job....where she speaks English. She still speaks Spanish with her family at home. I have no problem with that at all. et tu, Brutus. Tom Wetmore came in with his New England clam chowder to throw at me because Olger asked me a question in German, to which I replied in German. If anyone wants to know, he was asking if I knew a gentleman at Seminar Schloss Bogenhofen, which was the Adventist Seminary where I went to school. I answered that I knew him, but only through email contact. I apologize to all who were offended by Olger's one question and my one line answer at the beginning of this thread. Now. Outta Here Posted August 1, 2010 Posted August 1, 2010 Back to the original topic then, my opinion is sort of like pkrause's. 1 Corinthians 13:12 For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known. I have thought about this verse many times, and I really think it comes right down to NOT having to communicate verbally with one another. We will just know. For my sci-fi friends out there--we'll sing as the Ood and we'll grok with our water brothers! Quote

It is about a desire to learn to function in the workplace. Some think there is a kindness to encouraging people to remain dependent. I think maybe it let's them feel superior and somehow more righteous I see this from both sides: the caucasion and the Mexican national. My wife works in a place where most of the clients are very wealthy whites (typically of German or English ancestory), but most of the work is done by Latinos or blacks. One of my daughters also worked there. The employers don't really care if the workers speak Spanish among themselves, but the clients do, and because of their wealth, they have the power to enforce their rule that no one should speak Spanish in their hearing. Do they do this because they want people to learn English so they will be better Americans? No. Their reason for demanding that my wife and others not speak Spanish is actually due to their dislike for Mexicans and people of color. How do I know this? Because the clients let it be known. There are no rules that these clients have to follow. They say what is on their mind, and they often call the Mexicans and blacks names and make fun of them. They called my daughter a "Mexican jumping bean," and said they can't trust hispanics and blacks because they steal. When she told them her father is blond and blue-eyed, they called her a liar and said they didn't believe her. This kind of racial, prejudicial language is allowed because the clients pay up to $4,000 a month to live there. No one is going to tell them to be quiet or clean up their speech. If an employee complains or does not please the clients, they are pointed to the door. In these times, that means no job. My point is that Mexicans often get the message that the reason they can't speak Spanish and must speak English is that their language, color, and culture is inferior or despised. Personally I agree that they need to learn English, but at the same time I see reasons for Mexicans to continue speaking Spanish. Their situation is a lot different from my German and English ancestors, who came here in order to start a completely new life. Mexicans come here primarily for economic reasons, i.e., money, and not because they dislike Mexico or are opposed to their country politically or religiously. They still love-- and are proud of-- their culture, their history, their land, and yes, their langauge. Quote John 3:16-17 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. [17] For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.
