miz3 Posted July 10, 2011 Author Posted July 10, 2011 The answer will be found in the letters that Ellen White wrote to Dr. Kellogg and to others about the issue. Suppose you share these back and forth letters between Ellen White and JH Kellogg.
miz3 Posted July 10, 2011 Author Posted July 10, 2011 Quote: Kellogg, page 40,41Man in his ignorance, in his efforts to account for the phenomena about him by so-called natural causes, in other words, in a vain and futile attempt to get along without God, to leave deity out of his philosophy, has actually made a deity of that hypothetical abstraction, NATURE, and has ascribed to nature the very powers and qualities which he has denied to God. Neglecting the real, the true God, men have thus erected a false god and have become idolaters in their worship of nature. Various forms of pantheism have thus become widely diffused, even among Christian people, and pantheistic and often heathen philosophies have insinuated themselves into the beliefs of orthodoxy. The only antidote for these false doctrines is the recognition of that most fundamental of all religious beliefs, namely, that there is one great source of all life and power, Jehovah, the 'God and Father of us all Quote: Kellogg's letter to Daniels, Oct 25, 1903You, Elder Daniels, and others have spoken about a fine line of distinction, but I could not quite see what it was, but this statement by Sister White makes it clear to me. The difference is this: When we say God is in the tree, the word 'God' is understood in that the Godhead is in the tree, God the Father, God the Son, and God, the Holy Spirit, whereas the proper understanding in order that wholesome conceptions should be preserved in our minds, is that God the Father sits upon his throne in heaven where God the Son is also; while God's life, or Spirit or presence is the all pervading power which is carrying out the will of God in all the universe In these two quotes it appears that Kellogg is saying nothing wrong! It is NOT even close to pantheism!
Moderators John317 Posted July 10, 2011 Moderators Posted July 10, 2011 In these two quotes it appears that Kellogg is saying nothing wrong! It is NOT even close to pantheism! Of course not. To understand what Kellogg taught, you have to read what he wrote in The Living Temple and read what Ellen White wrote about it and what she wrote to him. Kellogg taught that God was in all of nature, including the water you drink and take a bath in; in the food you eat; and in the trees and in your boots. This is false. God is not literally living in every human being and in the animals and plants. But Dr. Kellogg believed and taught these false doctrines. John 3:16-17 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. [17] For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.
miz3 Posted July 10, 2011 Author Posted July 10, 2011 Kellogg's view of the Trinity was wrong. He spiritualized the Trinity. He said that God is in the trees, in food, in water, in boots, etc. He said when we taste food, we are tasting God; and when we smell a flower, we are smelling God. He meant this in the literal sense. All this is false John317 when you state that Kellogg "spititualized the Trinity" what exactly do you mean? I have always seen the Trinity in Spiritual terms because they are Spiritual beings. They certainly are not "common" in any way. So I need you to define what you mean so we do not talk at cross purposes. Second, if Kellogg said that God is in the things you listed could you give me the page(s) in the Living Temple where Kellogg said these things.

ClubV12 Posted July 10, 2011 Posted July 10, 2011 If, after all these decades we are still trying to figure out where Kellogg went wrong, it does not bode well for the coming deceptions. Which will be so subtle and dangerous that if it were possible, even the very elect would be fooled. Recently I've come to believe one such deception will involve righteousness by faith vs the law. Already it is real easy to lean to far in either direction. Those who proclaim faith is everything and those who declare we must stay with the law. Of course, both are right. Only the true in spirit will be able to understand the powerful arguments for and against both sides of the issue when it's delivered by well respected and powerful speakers with the SDA church. I think this will be a major issue in the shaking. An "up-dated" 1888 all wrapped up in harmony, peace, love, a spirit of coming together and powerfully deceptive. Kellogg will look like childs play in comparison.... The balance is: The law will take care of itself when righteousness by faith is incorporated into the life. The plain testimony will have to be given, the "law" cannot be changed, smoothed over or rounded off. It is an imperative, we CAN overcome, perfection IS possible. To which we will hear the response, "legalism", and that message will infuriate those who will be convinced "faith" is everything. And of course, it is, also.
miz3 Posted July 10, 2011 Author Posted July 10, 2011 That's a topic for a seperate thread. You can read many of these in Ellen White's published writings, such as Testimonies To Ministers, etc. All of them are available. I respectfully disagree. I started this thread with the very intention to show definitively one way or the other the very things I am asking for. Which is Kellogg guilty as charged or is he not? If you cannot demonstrate the Kellogg quotes that show his "wild" views that "tended toward pantheism" and also demonstrate the Ellen White quotes that say Kellogg is wrong I have to wonder if indeed things are being swept under the rug. If the SDA Church is on such solid ground to have taken the MAJOR STEP OF KICKING OUT SO PROMINENT A PERSON then you ought to be able to show easily the clear unambiguous EVIDENCE that indeed Kellogg was "wild" enough in his beliefs to be kicked out of SDA Church! All I have is allegations, I have seen no proof that John Harvey Kellogg was a pantheist or even "tended toward pantheism! Is that all there is, allegations and no proof?

Kellogg's letter to Daniels, Oct 25, 1903 You, Elder Daniels, and others have spoken about a fine line of distinction, but I could not quite see what it was, but this statement by Sister White makes it clear to me. This is in perfect harmony with Scripture and the Testimonies: "The greatness of God is to us incomprehensible. ' The Lord's throne is in Heaven ' (Ps.11:4); yet by His Spirit He is everywhere present. He has an intimate knowledge of and a personal interest in all the works of His hands." Education, 132. "Where shall I go from Your Spirit? Where shall I flee from Your presence." Ps.139:7. This makes it forever clear that "The divine Spirit is the presence and power of God," "the unseen, mighty Intelligence that is working in and through all." E.G. White, Signs of the Times, Nov.23, 1891; Education,14. Thus we read, "Nature in her work testifies of the intelligent presence and active agency of a Being who moves in all things according to His will." Ministry of Healing,116. Pantheist theories do not acknowledge a personal God who created all things and who by His Spirit is moving in all things according to His will. On the contrary. Pantheism deifies nature as though nature had its own laws and powers to work with. It is a denial of God. sky "The merits of His sacrifice are sufficient to present to the Father in our behalf." skyblue888 Posted July 11, 2011 Posted July 11, 2011 The Testimonies teach that "Not only is He the Originator of all but He is the life of everything that lives. It is His life that we receive in the sunshine, in the pure, sweet air and in the food which builds up our bodies and sustains our strength. It is by His life that we exist, hour by hour, moment by moment. Except as perverted by sin, all His gifts tend to life, to health and joy." Education, p.197,8. He is the life of everything that lives! It is His life that we receive in the sunshine, in the pure, sweet air, and in the food.... For teaching this, was Mrs. White ever accused of being a pantheist? Absolutely not. Why accuse Dr. Kellogg of being a pantheist then? "It is the Word of God, the impartation of His life, that gives life to the seed; and of that life, we, in eating the grain, become partakers. This God desires us to discern; He desires that even in receiving our daily bread we may recognize His agency and be brought into closer fellowship with Him." Moderators John317 Posted July 11, 2011 Moderators Posted July 11, 2011 I'm not going to post long quotes from "the Living Temple" here. I don't believe people ought to be reading it, and Ellen White discouraged studying it. The problem is that if we reject the words of the prophet, we can very quickly be on dangerous ground, because when we refuse to listen to God speaking to us through His prophets, there's not much that God can do for us. What happened to the Israelites when they rebelled against Moses? John 3:16-17 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. [17] For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.
Moderators John317 Posted July 11, 2011 Moderators Posted July 11, 2011 Why accuse Dr. Kellogg of being a pantheist then?sky Ellen White wrote: Dangers in Speculative Study.--The light of truth which God designs shall come to the people of the world at this time is not that which the world's men of learning are seeking to impart; for these men in their research often arrive at erroneous conclusions, and in their study of many authors become enthused with theories that are of satanic origin. Satan, clothed in the garb of an angel of light, presents for the study of the human mind subjects which seem very interesting, and which are full of scientific mystery. In the investigation of these subjects, men are led to accept erroneous conclusions, and to unite with seducing spirits in the work of propounding new theories which lead away from the truth. {CW 92.2} There is danger that the false sentiments expressed in the books that they have been reading will sometimes be interwoven by our ministers, teachers, and editors with their arguments, discourses, and publications, under the belief that they are the same in principle as the teachings of the Spirit of truth. The book, Living Temple, is an illustration of this work, the writer of which declared in its support that its teachings were the same as those found in the writings of Mrs. White. Again and again we shall be called to meet the influence of men who are studying sciences of satanic origin, through which Satan is working to make a nonentity of God and of Christ.-- Testimonies, Vol. 9, pp. 67-68. (1909.) {CW 92, 93} To Editors of Our Periodicals.--I am warned that the less our ministers handle the subject of pantheism, the less they will help Satan to present his theories to the people. Let the truth for this time be kept before them. Never, never repeat the spiritualistic sentiments, the strange, misleading theories, which have for years been coming in. {CW 93.1} The Lord has a message for our ministers to bear, but He does not call them to speak on the subjects upon which the minds of some have been dwelling. Those who do this place in minds seeds that will germinate and spring up to bear fruit. Thus people are educated to catch up the sentiments of Satan, and give them publicity. {CW 93.2} Let the repetition of Satan's falsehoods be kept out of our papers. What we need in our papers is the gospel message that will save souls. "O Zion, that bringest good tidings, get thee up into the high mountain; O Jerusalem, that bringest good tidings, lift up thy voice with strength; lift it up, be not afraid; say unto the cities of Judah, Behold your God." {CW 93.3} Keep your eyes fixed on the Lord Jesus Christ, and by beholding Him you will be changed into His likeness. Talk not of these spiritualistic theories. Let them find no place in your mind. Let our papers be kept free from everything of the kind. Publish the truth; do not publish error. Do not try to explain in regard to the personality of God. You cannot give any further explanation than the Bible has given. Human theories regarding Him are good for nothing. Do not soil your minds by studying the misleading theories of the enemy. Labor to draw minds away from everything of this character. It will be better to keep these subjects out of our papers. Let the doctrines of present truth be put into our papers, but give no room to a repeating of erroneous theories.-- Letter 179, 1904. {CW 93.4} Close Criticism of All Writings.--The Lord did not lead in the production of some of the statements that are made in this book [Living Temple]. He has given us His word, and this word is to be the man of our counsel. It seemed to me passing strange that men who have been long in the work cannot discern the character of this book. A great deal of scripture is used, but it is woven in and brought together in such a way that to many minds error is made to appear as truth. Erroneous theories are so presented that those who receive them will certainly be misled, and led on step by step by the enemy. {CW 157, 158} If ever there was a time when the writings of every one connected with our work should be closely criticized, it is now. The Lord has made known to me that His word is to be studied, and as no such representations as those made in Living Temple are made in the word, we are to reject them. We are to take the word as God has given it to us. If Christ had thought it essential for such theories to be presented to human minds, He would have included them in His teachings. As our Owner and Redeemer, He has put in His word all the instruction that is necessary for our salvation.--Manuscript 127, 1905. {CW 158.1} I am given a message to bear to you and the rest of our physicians who are connected with the Medical Missionary Association. Separate from the influence exerted by the book Living Temple; [A 568-PAGE BOOK ISSUED IN 1903 BY DR. J. H. KELLOGG IN WHICH PANTHEISTIC PHILOSOPHIES WERE PROMULGATED.--COMPILERS.] for it contains specious sentiments. There are in it sentiments that are entirely true, but these are mingled with error. Scriptures are taken out of their connection, and are used to uphold erroneous theories. {1SM 199.1} The thought of the errors contained in this book has given me great distress, and the experience that I have passed through in connection with the matter has nearly cost me my life. {1SM 199.2} It will be said that Living Temple has been revised. But the Lord has shown me that the writer has not changed, and that there can be no unity between him and the ministers of the gospel while he continues to cherish his present sentiments. I am bidden to lift my voice in warning to our people, saying, "Be not deceived; God is not mocked" (Galatians 6:7). {1SM 199.3} You have had access to Testimonies for the Church, volumes 7 and 8. In these Testimonies the danger signal is raised. But the light so clear and plain to minds that have not been influenced by deceptive theories, has not been discerned by some. While the misleading theories of this book are entertained by our physicians, there cannot be union between them and the ministers who are bearing the gospel message. There should be no union until there is a change. {1SM 199.4} When medical missionaries make their practice and example harmonize with the name they bear, when they feel their need of uniting firmly with the ministers of the gospel, then there can be harmonious action. But we must firmly refuse to be drawn away from the platform of eternal truth, which since 1844 has stood the test. {1SM 199.5} Alpha Presented in "Living Temple" I am instructed to speak plainly. "Meet it," is the word spoken to me. "Meet it firmly, and without delay." But it is not to be met by our taking our working forces from the field to investigate doctrines and points of difference. We have no such investigation to make. In the book Living Temple there is presented the alpha of deadly heresies. The omega will follow, and will be received by those who are not willing to heed the warning God has given. {1SM 200.1} Our physicians, upon whom important responsibilities rest, should have clear spiritual discernment. They are to stand constantly on guard. Dangers that we do not now discern will soon break upon us, and I greatly desire that they shall not be deceived. I have an intense longing to see them standing free in the Lord. I pray that they may have courage to stand firm for the truth as it is in Jesus, holding fast the beginning of their confidence unto the end.--Special Testimonies, Series B, No. 2, pp. 49, 50. {1SM 200.2} John 3:16-17 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. [17] For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.
ClubV12 Posted July 11, 2011 Posted July 11, 2011 Thats one of the beautiful things about having the Spirit of Prophecy to pull from. Ellen White made it clear about her position on Kellogg, he was teaching falsehood. That was noted very early on in this thread, and yet, the questions remain. Subtle error mixed with truth, a most impressive way to reach and confuse minds. On THIS subject, Ellen White is very clear, don't even bother to read his book. I'll take that at face value and thank God for His counsel on the matter. I will also learn how easy it is to become deceived by well meaning "good" men and powerful speakers presenting much truth. Mixed with dangerous error. Thank God we have an inside track on this stuff, the Lord has provided a messenger for us. For those that question and are not convinced in the prophet, your on your own. Good luck with that, your going to need it because thats all you got...

In that view, that the Omega is upon us, how does it relate or tie in to the Alpha heresy that Kellogg presented? Of course asking that question should also make clear my position on Kelloggs teaching, the same as the prophet, he was teaching truth mixed with dangerous error. Perhaps I should read up on this idea of an Omega heresy coming into play at this time, without getting to deeply involved in the subject matter itself. As the counsel of EGW stated, study the truth, everything else will become clear as a result. miz3 Posted July 11, 2011 Author Posted July 11, 2011 I'm not going to post long quotes from "the Living Temple" here. I don't believe people ought to be reading it, and Ellen White discouraged studying it. OK, John317, if JH Kellogg was a pantheist or one who tended toward pantheism then his views of such a sin would be evident in other places other the "Living Temple". Can you show evidence that JH Kellogg in other places than the Living Temple that he was at least a "tending toward pantheism"? Or is the only place such evidence exists is in the "Living Temple"?
miz3 Posted July 11, 2011 Author Posted July 11, 2011 John317, I find Sky's presentations of Ellen White in regard to God being in nature no different than the quote already cited from the Living Temple. I find this interesting! Unless there is more evidence that clearly shows the wrong done by JH Kellogg has done it looks like the SDA Church is covering up the Truth. Could it be that the real problem was one of power(control) and money and not really about Doctrine or Theology at all. Doctrine and Theology were only a smoke screen for the quest by the SDA Church for the money and power of Battle Creek Sanitarium and all the rest of JH Kellogg's assets. (cereal empire). Could it be that JH Kellogg did not want to sign over the power and assets to the "brethren". So they went on a campaign to discredit Kellogg hoping to pressure him into giving them the power and assets they coveted. When Kellogg would not budge on giving the SDA Church the assets of Kellogg's empire they booted him out on trumped up charges. In doing this they forever labelled Kellogg a lost soul. Just surmising? God expects us to do our business in the Light and not in the darkness. So again, I ask where is the evidence?!
ClubV12 Posted July 11, 2011 Posted July 11, 2011 miz3 says, "Unless there is more evidence that clearly shows the wrong done by JH Kellogg..." I actually had to laugh out loud at that. How much clearer could the prophet be on this subject? PK, I thought I saw a thread sometime back in "Townhall" about a book concerning the Omega apostasy. I really don't know anything about it, but that quote about Kellogg being the "Alpha" sure caught my attention! Looks like Kelloggs work of deception continues even to this day, by the way. Whew, SO glad we have specific light on this subject so I don't have to worry about it. On to that Omega thing... :)
