But the fact was that there had never been any change in Christ's position or authority. He had always been in His position, sharing the throne of the Father. Christ held that position as God, not as a being who had been been given a promotion or put into a new position. This is clearly what Lucifer had thought.

Lucifer's jealousy and envy resulted in his deceiving the angels about the nature of Christ's position. He wanted the angels to believe that he was trying to make their situation better, but in reality, Lucifer was attempting to bring Christ down and elevate himself. This was the beginning of Lucifer's quest to be in Christ's place-- the antichrist.

Yes, there was confusion because of Satan's deceptions. No doubt of that. I'm not denying that the meeting was called in order to correct the deceptions, but it was also called to explain why Christ had the supremacy and why He was honored above Lucifer. Lucifer was confused about this aspect. Lucifer had the wrong idea about why Michael the Archangel was honored above himself. The Father explained it to the angels, but Lucifer's jealousy, envy, and hatred for Christ kept him from fully comprehending the truth.

Notice what Satan was thinking:

At the meeting, God told the angels the truth about the identity of Michael the Archangel, but Lucifer's jealousy and envy prevented him from fully comprehending what God said. That is what the practice and cherishing of sin does: it prevents us from seeing truth.

What was the truth about Michael the Archangel? Had God endowed Christ with unlimited power and command, as Lucifer thought? Had Christ's position changed? The truth was that Michael the Archangel was neither a created nor a derived being and therefore had not been given a position above Lucifer. Michael's position was due to who He was: the self-existent God. He had always held that position and it was not because of an arbitrary decision on the Father's part to give Christ a position above that of Lucifer.

But instead of accepting the truth about Christ, Lucifer became all the more determined to have equal authority with His commander, Michael the Archangel. Lucifer believed that he himself should have been chosen to be in the place occupied by Christ. Finally, Lucifer came to the point where he actually aspired to the height of God Himself.

Notice in the following paragraphs what Lucifer was thinking:

He left the immediate presence of the Father, dissatisfied, and filled with envy against Jesus Christ. Concealing his real purposes, he assembled the angelic host. He introduced his subject, which was himself. As one aggrieved, he related the preference God had given Jesus to the neglect of himself. He told them that henceforth all the sweet liberty the angels had enjoyed was at an end. For had not a ruler been appointed over them, to whom they from henceforth must yield servile honor? He stated to them that he had called them together to assure them that he no longer would submit to this invasion of his rights and theirs; that never would he again bow down to Christ; that he would take the honor upon himself which should have been conferred upon him, and would be the commander of all who would submit to follow him and obey his voice. There was contention among the angels. Satan and his sympathizers were striving to reform the government of God. They were discontented and unhappy because they could not look into his unsearchable wisdom and ascertain his purposes in exalting his Son Jesus, and endowing him with such unlimited power and command. Angels that were loyal and true sought to reconcile this mighty, rebellious angel to the will of his Creator. They justified the act of God in conferring honor upon Jesus Christ, and with forcible reasoning sought to convince Satan that no less honor was his now than before the Father had proclaimed the honor which he had conferred upon his Son. They clearly set forth that Jesus was the Son of God, existing with him before the angels were created; and that he had ever stood at the right hand of God, and his mild, loving authority had not heretofore been questioned; and that he had given no commands but what it was joy for the heavenly host to execute. They urged that Christ's receiving special honor from the Father, in the presence of the angels, did not detract from the honor that he had heretofore received. The angels wept. Here is some of the evidence showing Lucifer did not know who Michael really was:

Check out the EGW quote in its context. The context shows that it's speaking of the God-Man, Jesus Christ, not the pre-incarnate Word, who lived in close relationship with God for all eternity. Notice that the quote immediately follows Hebrews 1: 5, which deals with the incarnation.

God is the Father of Christ; Christ is the Son of God. To Christ has been given an exalted position. He has been made equal with the Father. All the counsels of God are opened to His Son. {8T 268.3}

Jesus said to the Jews: "My Father worketh hitherto, and I work. . . . The Son can do nothing of Himself, but what He seeth the Father do: for what things soever He doeth, these also doeth the Son likewise. For the Father loveth the Son, and showeth Him all things that Himself doeth." John 5:17-20. {8T 268, 269}

Compare the above quote in blue with Phil. 2: 5-10--

I think this shows that the EGW quote is not saying the position of the pre-incarnate Word had changed or that He had been "made" equal with the Father.

Rather, Ellen White is saying that after His resurrection, Christ had been "exalted" and "made so much better than the angels."

If this prince of angels could but attain to his true, exalted position, great good would accrue to the entire host of heaven; for it was his object to secure freedom for all. But now even the liberty which they had hitherto enjoyed was at an end; for an absolute Ruler had been appointed them, and to His authority all must pay homage. Such were the subtle deceptions that through the wiles of Lucifer were fast obtaining in the heavenly courts.

There had been no change in the position or authority of Christ. Lucifer's envy and misrepresentation and his claims to equality with Christ had made necessary a statement of the true position of the Son of God; but this had been the same from the beginning. Many of the angels were, however, blinded by Lucifer's deceptions. {PP 38.1}

The confusion had to do with the fact that Lucifer's jealousy and envy led him to believe that he could have the same position that the pre-incarnate Christ held. He believed that Christ had been put into that position and that therefore another angel such as himself could also attain the same postion. He wondered why Christ was honored above himself.

But the fact was that there had never been any change in Christ's position or authority. He had always been in His position, sharing the throne of the Father. Christ held that position as God, not as a being who had been been given a promotion or put into a new position. This is clearly what Lucifer had thought.

Lucifer's jealousy and envy resulted in his deceiving the angels about the nature of Christ's position. He wanted the angels to believe that he was trying to make their situation better, but in reality, Lucifer was attempting to bring Christ down and elevate himself. This was the beginning of Lucifer's quest to be in Christ's place-- the antichrist.

Ezekiel chapter 28 and Isaiah chapter 14 say that satan wanted to be above "God". The Bible says NOTHING ABOUT SATAN WANTING TO BE IN THE SAME POSITION AS CHRIST.
