Guest Posted April 21, 2012 Posted April 21, 2012 In another thread, Lazarus posted this MLK quote (paraphrasing since I'm too lazy to find the exact quote): "The black man needs the white man to get rid of his anger, and the white man needs the black man to get rid of his guilt." How is this done? I don't buy the premise.

doug yowell Posted April 22, 2012 Posted April 22, 2012 I think it's a two way street though. Some have now reached the point where they think that AA's are stirring the racism.

olger Posted April 22, 2012 Posted April 22, 2012 Which cultures inflict abuse on those that apply themselves to learning? "ATHENS, Ga. -- The fear of “acting white” may keep many black people away from activities they would like, and which could help them have better lives, according to University of Georgia researcher Bantu Gross, who spoke on campus Wednesday as part of the UGA Office of Institutional Diversity lecture series. “Acting white” can be a powerful accusation against someone who considers themselves black, Gross notes. That’s especially true for young people, such as high school students, who face significant peer pressure, said Gross. And sometimes, pressure can come even from parents, he added. “You’re an alien in your own territory,” said Gross. Other researchers have shown that black people who make high grades, score high on the SAT or read a lot may be subjected to the accusation of acting white, Gross said." olger Posted April 22, 2012 Posted April 22, 2012 In the United States, acting white is a pejorative term usually applied to African-Americans, which refers to a person's perceived betrayal of their culture by assuming the social expectations of white society.[1][2] Success in education in particular (depending on one's cultural background) can be seen as a form of selling out by being disloyal to one's culture. Wikipedia The Asian culture, on the other hand generally expects their children to study hard, do well and apply themselves. I say that this is a superior culture, of the two examples cited. "Please don't feed the drama queens.."

[/ My point is that for whites today the mere mention of the topic is stirring. That was also the case in the height of the civil right movement. Quote: Whose thinking? But that was the only example he gave. That seemed to not help his case for the "culturist" alternative to racism. By asking if there were other examples he could come up with I was just giving olger an opportunity to redeem himself from what seems to be an apparent racial bias to being a "culturist". Read as a whole, his posts seem to suggest that the black culture is inferior. It is looking down on another people group which is what racism is about. And the bias against education as not being white enough only helps to reinforce the fact that the cultural divide is race based no matter from which side you are seeing it. It reinforces a stereotype that blacks are athletes but not scholars, they are physically superior and mentally inferior. That the culture buys into that stereotype should not be viewed so much as a cultural phenomenon but a very unfortunate byproduct of the stereotyping that racism brings and the expectations it imposes on both sides of the divide. jasd Posted April 22, 2012 Posted April 22, 2012 >>Any other cultures do that or are you only seeing black culture doing that?<< Hoo-ah!--when's the last time you seen approbation on a reservation for an AmIndian "acting white"? Bet it's been a long, long time, eh? ;-) However, given that - they act white enough running their casinos, yes? Matter-of-fact, they act 'white' enough as to run successful and remunerative enterprises. Thank Gd for small favors... So, drop in one of those 'reservation' casinos - laugh, scratch, and have a good time, as you're welcome; and oh, do drop a few dollar$ whilst at it. ;-) I'll say this though: in spite of the AmIndian having been genocided by 'crackerman' ;-) and nearly exterminated... and given that they do not encourage 'whiteness' in their children - you'll be safer walking through their reservations and their cultural events than you'd be walking some of the mean streets of most major American cities today. Oh, and judging from the unwillingness of our newly-arrived Hispanics to assimilate - I'd venture that there's a certain antipathy towards 'whiteness' in their communities, yes? I'd even go further and note the hate in their La Raza movement. Lastly, a sane person wouldn't think of walking their barrios... day or night.
Ellen Posted April 22, 2012 Posted April 22, 2012 There is a new book out we just bought for the church library. It is called "Lewis C. Sheafe" Apostle to black America. Anyone wondering just what is wrong with black/white/church relationships would get thier eyes open reading this book. It is not an easy read but I read every word of it. My husband and I experienced a lot of racial incidents and so I had an interest in the subject. Even if you don't read the whole thing, scanning the parts most interesting is worth it.
Moderators lazarus Posted April 23, 2012 Moderators Posted April 23, 2012 Thanks Ellen for posting this. I had never heard of this pastor before. For those who want to know more, here's a brief run down: Born Just as the Civil War Began, Lewis Sheafe grew to manhood at a pivotal moment in American history. But instead of racial equality, the nation offered its freed slaves further oppression and injustice. Sheafe-strong-willed, dynamic, and seemingly tireless-had but two main objectives: Uplift his people spiritually and socially, and consistently adhere to biblical principle in all aspects of life. His thirst for truth led him first to the Baptists, where he became both an eloquent minister and a prominent leader of the Black community. Then his poor health led him to Battle Creek Sanitarium, where he encountered Seventh-day Adventism. Sheafe saw in the Adventist message the tenets of race relations he already championed, and he embraced it wholeheartedly. He was sent to lead the Black work in Washington, D.C., in 1902, and his evangelistic campaigns drew standing-room-only crowds of both Black and White listeners. But during his turbulent years of Adventist ministry, he and church leaders could not agree on how to apply biblical principles of racial equality. The conflict eventually proved fatal to his ties with the denomination. In this gripping biography Douglas Morgan pieces together the life of this forgotten leader whose story sheds light on the reason that no lasting, separate Black Adventist denomination ever forme Great spirits have always found violent opposition from mediocrities. The latter cannot understand it when a man does not thoughtlessly submit to hereditary prejudices but honestly and courageously uses his intelligence. Einstein
