Robert Posted March 6, 2008 Posted March 6, 2008 "whoever claims to live in him must walk as Jesus did." 1 Jn 2:3,6 NIV Okay...I understand Paul fairly well, but John I find confusing. For example, Gerry's quote. It sounds like it is saying that if claim Christ I must walk as He did. Well, I don't...I have no delusions here. Is there a change in my life? Yes, but I am failing to fully live Christ's selfless life. Ellen White has a similar statement: "To one who, during the Saviour's ministry, offered to follow him…, Jesus said, 'The foxes have holes, and the birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head.' Those who follow him must share his poverty. 'If any man will come after me," he declares, "let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.' So shall ye be my disciples." RH 7-4-12 Again, I am not so selfless that I am in poverty. Hence there is some selfishness in my life. That's why I say John is a bit confusing. So let's read the whole context: 2:1 My little children, I am writing these things to you that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous; 2 and He Himself is the propitiation for our sins; and not for ours only, but also for those of the whole world. 3 And by this we know that we have come to know Him, if we keep His commandments. 4 The one who says, “I have come to know Him,” and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him; 5 but whoever keeps His word, in him the love of God has truly been perfected. By this [love] we know that we are in Him: 6 the one who says he abides in Him ought himself to walk in the same manner as He walked. 7 Beloved, I am not writing a new commandment to you, but an old commandment which you have had from the beginning; the old commandment is the word which you have heard. 8 On the other hand, I am writing a new commandment to you, which is true in Him and in you, because the darkness is passing away, and the true light is already shining. 9 The one who says he is in the light and yet hates his brother is in the darkness until now. 10 The one who loves his brother abides in the light and there is no cause for stumbling in him. Okay...in verse 2 John makes is sound like we can actually live wholly without sin. Then in verse 3 he mentions "His commandments" also called "His word" in verse 5. Then John goes from the plural (i.e., commandments) and goes to the singular (i.e., a new commandment). To me he is a bit confusing. Is he speaking of the Ten Commandments or just portions of it? I am not sure.... Quote

Moderators Gerr Posted March 6, 2008 Moderators Posted March 6, 2008 Quote: "The tempter stands by to accuse them, as he stood by to resist Joshua. He points to their filthy garments, their defective characters. He presents their weakness and folly, their sins of ingratitude, their unlikeness to Christ, which has dishonored their Redeemer. He endeavors to affright them with the thought that their case is hopeless, that the stain of their defilement will never be washed away." CCh 352 God's people ... those whom He will save are thus described as having : Filthy Garments Defective Characters Sins of Ingratitude Weakness and folly Unlikeness to Christ Hey ... that sounds like ME. You also left out some very important passages to put the above quote in its proper context. Here is the rest of the story: "Satan urges before God his accusations against them, declaring that by their sins they have forfeited the divine protection and claiming the right to destroy them as transgressors..... The people of God have in many respects been very faulty. Satan has accurate knowledge of the sins which he has tempted them to commit, and he presents these in the most exaggerated light..... But while the followers of Christ have sinned, they have not given themselves to the control of evil. They have put away their sins, and sought the Lord in humility and contrition, and the divine Advocate pleads in their behalf.... The assaults of Satan are strong, his delusions are terrible, but the Lord's eye is upon His people. Their affliction is great, the flames of the furnace seem about to consume them, but Jesus will bring them forth as gold tried in the fire. Their earthliness must be removed that the image of Christ may be perfectly reflected; unbelief must be overcome; faith, hope, and patience are to be developed." RH 1/9/1908 There is no choosing to sin deliberately until Jesus comes here. She speaks instead of purification and reflecting the image of Jesus more fully. Gerry Quote

Moderators Gerr Posted March 6, 2008 Moderators Posted March 6, 2008 I do not deny that much of self-love is sinful. But if it is possible to love my neighbor with the love that is of divine origin (agape) then I believe that I can love myself with that same sinless agape love. Or is the divine agape love that is directed toward self also sinful? I am curious why you set EGW word as LAW when it suits your theology, yeah, even set her word above the Scripture on the subject of self-love, but when her word contradicts your theology, suddenly, she is no more a prophet than just an ordinary person! We are not to be blindly accepting her. Her purpose is to point us to scripture. We are not to use her as the authority on all subjects. We are to study the Bible. The less we use her the better. I'm sure that Judas at times had a desire for goodness and holiness, but he never totally surrendered his will to God. Moderators John317 Posted March 7, 2008 Moderators Posted March 7, 2008 I think we're in essential agreement, Redwood. Certainly we're not saved by character development. That's not the idea at all. Take a second look at the phrase, "...we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is." Those who are ready for Him to come will be like Him. If they aren't, they won't see him. The lost won't be able to look on His face. They're destroyed by the brightness of His presence. The saved flourish in his brightness while the unsaved perish. What makes the difference? Is it an arbitrary decision on God's part? I would suggest that the difference lies in the "sealing" that the saved receive before the plagues fall. But why are some sealed and other aren't? Quote John 3:16-17 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. Robert Posted March 7, 2008 Posted March 7, 2008 There's no evidence in Romans 7 that he is indwelt by the Holy Spirit at that point in his experience. That's why we are not to judge by the outward appearance. God looks at the heart...the mind. When He looks at the man of Romans 7 He sees a man whose heart is right with God, but has not learned to walk in the Spirit. Hence, even though he is failing, He is accepted "in Christ"! Ellen White: "The soul who sees Jesus by faith, repudiates his own righteousness. He sees himself as incomplete [imperfect], his repentance insufficient, his strongest faith but feebleness, his most costly sacrifice as meager, and he sinks in humility at the foot of the cross. But a voice speaks to him from the oracles of God's Word. In amazement he hears the message, 'Ye are complete in Him.' Now all is at rest in his soul. No longer must he strive to find some worthiness in himself, some meritorious deed by which to gain the favor of God." [FW 107] Quote

RH 1/9/1908 Please note she does not say, "Their earthliness must be removed that the image of Christ may be perfectly reflected so that they can go to heaven." In order to perfectly reflect Christ the last generation must be totally separated from all earthly attachments. Why? Because the principle that this world is built on is "self-seeking". Using man as his tool, Satan has developed a kingdom (the Bible refers to it as “the kingdom of this world”) that is based entirely on the principle of self and which is in complete opposition and contradiction to the “kingdom of heaven.” Everything, therefore, that goes to make up this worldly system (kosmos) — nationalism, tribalism, politics, education, commerce, recreation, sports, social clubs, technology, etc. — is founded upon the principle of love of self, even though at times this principle may not be obvious. According to 1 John2:16, “all that is in the world” (i.e., without exception) is based or founded upon lust (i.e., love of self). Quote
LifeHiscost Posted March 7, 2008 Posted March 7, 2008 Please note she does not say, "Their earthliness must be removed that the image of Christ may be perfectly reflected so that they can go to heaven." ....the principle that this world is built on is "self-seeking". As I understand your obsession, Robert, you are concerned that anyone who does something to gain for themselves is not only a legalist, but also sinful for doing so. It is also my understanding that Jesus is our example as well as our guide through the Holy Spirit. "But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth;...." John 16:13 NASB "Then they asked Him, saying, “Teacher, we know that You say and teach rightly, and You do not show personal favoritism, but teach the way of God in truth:" Luke 20:21 NKJV "Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God." Heb 12:2 KJV It appears from this Scripture, Jesus, for joy, did some works that He despised. Do you then believe Jesus to be sinful? Or at the very least, in this case, Jesus is not to be followed as the Way? "Jesus saith unto him, I am the way..." John 14:6 KJV Regards! Quote Lift Jesus up!!
Robert Posted March 7, 2008 Posted March 7, 2008 Do you then believe Jesus to be sinful? Unlike Jesus, you have lived a life of self-seeking. So no, Jesus is not one bit selfish...I can't say that about you. You are not free of the love of self. This same is true of everyone on this forum. Quote
