This is reminding me of all the 'jewelry' discussions that used to be around year after year. The subject became so old and musty that people started gagging!

Reckon there will always be someone who believes they have the 'inside' of what God is saying and find an other subject to carry on with. Me thinks we have some very unhappy people who want to set everyone else straight to the real truth!

But I always come back to the question....whose truth?

God gets used for a lot 'truth' that is just...well.....each to their own conclusion.

The Bible is not some injectable truth serum to be used for truth finding but rather to lead the believer to the author. More like a road map to God for those who have questions. Each can take their question directly to the source, much less muddy that way.

Allowing people to become informed on this subject is certain to get to some negative reaction. That is to be expected.

But with all the recent news from the President - to Rush Limbaugh speaking up on this topic - it is timely.

Is that your view on the Bible doctrine of inspiration and prophets - and how God works with them to send messages to mankind?

I too have had pastors that promoted super bowl events and approved of such actions by the church - from the pulpit. In addition to having Pastors talk about their own enthusiasm while speaking in the pulpit for their own personal time watching football.

At other times they simply refer to football players or to the importance of scheduling some event so that people can still go watch "the game".

What I have never heard from the pulpit is any pastor admit to the existence of the statements on football from the pulpit - much less take the time to make up a story about why we should ignore those statements.

I think they simply don't know and are working in the dark on that one.

in Christ,

Bob

I have to agree with some of the above posters...I can't recall there being an announced Super Bowl event promoted from up front or in the bulletin, whether by our pastors or our social committee.

Have their been Super Bowl parties? Yes, there have. Ever advertised/promoted by the church? No in my recollection.

Any promotion was by personal invite/word of mouth. No one tried to keep it secret - we just thought church was not the place to promote a Super Bowl - or any football/sport party (March Madness discussion, anyone? Gets crazier than the Super Bowl in some parts).

Blessings,

To take the cross of Christ means to depend solely on Him for everything, and this is the abasement of all human pride. Men love to fancy themselves independent. But let the cross be preached, let it be made known that in man dwells no good thing and that all must be received as a gift, and straightway someone is offended." Ellet J. March Madness not so much as College games are usually played on Sabbath so most SDAs really don't get all that serious about college games.

I was thinking more of the betting and playoff bracket prediction pools associated with the March Madness basketball tournament, where there's a better chance one's team is not playing on Sabbath...gets intense! Some here might see it as a form of gambling.... reyes

Of course, I have friends who'd be saying I'm meddling now... preacher

But...we all watch the Super Bowl for the ads, right?

Blessings!

Quote:
there is a statement from God to one of His prophets - that football is an invention of Satan.

Correction - there is a supposed statement allegedly from God to one who some believe to be one of His prophets - that football is an invention of Satan. Not everyone reading this believes in the absolute infallibility of this prophet and do not give her words the same authority as scripture, because not everyone here is SDA.

Quote:
How about, "With God, all things are possible."

Love it, Tom!

Good One JoeMo. And might I add - that the game of football during the times of that person who was writing about it .... is completely different now. Some feel that the changes in football over the past 5 years have rendered it nothing but a sissy's game. Some are calling it the NFLs version of flag football.

Context peoples Context.

Much applause!!!

I believe there was a thread about this before, but I ask again - If I KNOW I am right and have the truth

and

- The other person KNOWS they are right and have the truth

but

Those truths do not agree

then

Who has the truth?

I think all will agree with me that the point being made in that post is not hard to see.

And so we are each called to use our free will just as Adam and Eve were called to use their free will and to choose to either accept the warning God gives us - or to simply ignore it and follow our own preferences instead.

Let each one be fully convinced in his/her own mind when it comes to "Adventism and football".

Honestly Bob, I am just happy that this thread gained another page. The big huge photo on the last one totally messed up my screen........

Also, I think that if people accept EGW as a prophet, who's every single written word was of the Christian God and never influenced by her own opinion and tastes - then indeed they should probably not watch or play football.

But there is a lot it would seem they should not do.

Bob, you might be interested in the most recent talk given by Dave Stewart, at Advent Hope today. It should be put up on Audioverse in the next couple of days. It's on (real)football.

Don't be fooled EmptyCross -

There is not one person on the planet who believes every word that Ellen White write. And next to none who believe this quote. I sincerely doubt that Bob believes or practices even what this quote says.

Exactly why I put so many stipulations on it before saying that the person should not watch football bwink

But I stand by it - if someone really feels that strongly about EGW - then they should not watch it, but as I also said, there is a whole lot of other things that they should not do.

What's not to believe? Do you think there are some things that she lied about?

I can see you speaking about your own unbelief, but I don't think you can speak for the entire planet.

Yes they could all be wrong.

But we know at least 144,000 will not be watching.
